K-State Slate: 11.22.11
K-State Football
Collin Klein has been limited to "mental reps" in practice, which may partially explain his ineffectiveness against Texas.
Along with Oklahoma State and Oklahoma, K-State can still claim a share of the Big 12 title with a win over Iowa State and an OU win over OSU.
Bill still has K-State in the Cotton Bowl. If you want a BCS bowl game, it would be wise to pull for Ohio State to beat Michigan, unlikely though it may be.
K-State Basketball
Frank Martin announced the signings of Robert Upshaw and Laimonas Chatkevicius yesterday.
College Football
Rich Rodriguez will replace Mike Stoops at Arizona.
Big 12 Basketball
Two Big 12 teams got big wins yesterday. KU beat vaunted Georgetown, the school that couldn't possibly lose a recruit to K-State unless K-State cheated, 67-63. In Kansas City, Missouri destroyed Notre Dame, 87-58.

Haskin slipped up a little...
The first time we didn’t win the time of possession battle was against OU, not Texas. This is the second time this season we lost that particular battle.
Would you like some Freys with that?
Wait, wait, wait.
How did I not know Jonathan Beasley is a GA? This explains a lot.

Yes. We hired him away from there when Snyder returned.

Looking ahead, assuming WVU and TCU simply replace A&M and MU on the schedule in some order
Will it be possible for the Cats to have bye weeks that aren’t the 2nd and 13th weeks of the season?! Yeah, the 2nd week was nice after that opening game near-disaster against EKU, but the 13th week is almost ridiculously late. How about week 10 instead?
Anyway, I’m excited to see the two signees, but I have no expectations they’ll be good for much going into next year. JO should be a stud by then, and Gip is going to be hard to remove (we hope!) from the starting lineup.
I think the chance of a BCS bowl is fairly remote, but possible. I’m MUCH more excited about the Big 12 championship possibility. I feel so dirty, but Go Boomer Land-Thieves!

I don't think our BCS chances are as remote as some think
Granted some things might have to play out like Houston or Michigan losing, but there are some publications including some tv analysts projecting us in if OSU beats OU and we win Dec 3. I tend to agree. While I know this argument is moot to selection committees, the big 12 is number one in the computers and could possibly have 9 bowl eligible teams, so to not have 2 teams in seems pretty ludicrous.
I’m happy with whatever happens as long as we beat Iowa State. Let the chaos begin this week!
Bitchslapping Texas since 1997
We have a 13th week bye because KSU and ISU agreed to change the game date.
That put the game on a weekend when there were fewer teams playing (due to it being playoff week) and the opportunity for it being televised nationally was better. Snyder also referenced getting it off of the holiday weekend so coaches, etc., could have time with families.
Made sense then and makes more sense now with the turn of events. Snyder is definitely showing he’s thinking more about things like his Asst Coaches and their families this time around.
If I'd known I was going to live this long, I'd have taken better care of myself.
yea I like the fact that we had two bye weeks
esp this late with Klein having to take off the last 2 weeks anyway. Gets us healthy and also makes the time frame between the bowl and last regular season game less dramatic = shouldn’t be as rusty.
"Nor yet in Dell?"
Last year
We played on Thanksgiving weekend, and really only had one bye week (because of the two Thursday games).
In 2009 we did not have a bye week at all, our last game was 11/21.
In 2008 we ended on 11/22, and had another screwy bye week situation with the Wednesday night Louisville game.
In 2007 we played Fresno State on 11/24 (saturday after Thanksgiving), and had a bye week on week 4.
In 2006 we played our last game on 11/18 and had no bye weeks.
In 2005 we played our last game on 11/19 and had a bye week on week 3.
KSU doesn’t have the schedule for 2004 on the official website, and I’m getting tired of looking these up anyway, but you see a trend (or should).
Point being, from what I remember, last year and the Fresno State game are the only seasons I can remember where we actually played a game on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Also, with the exception of the seasons when we had a weekday game, we have had either one (or zero) bye weeks.
As long as we don’t have a conference championship game, I would expect the scheduling to continue this way (last game during “championship week” and 2 bye weeks). If we go back to 12 teams and a championship game, I would expect us to finish the season prior to Thanksgiving, and return to one (possibly zero) bye week.
Snyder has explained his reasoning for not playing on Thanksgiving weekend in the past because THAT is the time for the players to spend with their families since they were not getting to spend time at Christmas because we were bowling (at least for 11 straight years). And that makes perfect sense to me. And if I was a player, I think I would rather do it that way, than have a game on Thanksgiving weekend AND go bowling, and not be able to spend time with family for either one (however, I know a lot of the player’s families would travel to the bowl location and have their family Christmas there instead of at home.)

only other season where we played the Sat after T-giving was 2001
That unfortunately was due to 9/11 that year. To be clear, obviously I’m stating it was unfortunate for 9/11 to occur at all, not the fact that a piddly football game had to get moved. Anyway I think we played Iowa State that Saturday because La Tech took their spot in the schedule who we were supposed to play the weekend following the tragedy.
I can’t echo your sentiments enough Jeremy, in complete agreement.
"Nor yet in Dell?"
I forgot about 2001. You are right.
I had to look up the schedule after you mentioned it.
We played LA Tech on 11/17 and Mizzou on 11/24.
And then followed it up with the dreadful Insight Bowl against Syracuse on 12/29.
Looking back on it, I’m not sure how the schedule was rearranged. It almost seems that maybe LA Tech fit into a bye week? But that would mean that we had originally scheduled to play Mizzou the Saturday after Thanksgiving, and Snyder was already in his “we want to give the kids Thanksgiving to spend with their families because we will be bowling at Christmas” philosophy. Hmmm. Interesting.
At first I thought maybe everyone in the country just slid all their games back a week, but that’s obviously not the case here, because we would have played them earlier in the season. Very curious as to how this was actually manipulated.

it was as I described...
La Tech had an open spot later in the season (11/17), so Missouri agreed to move their game to the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Worked out too that KSU was not the host site for a state football championship game that weekend as that’s usually when they play them, and they were previously a site for that.
"Nor yet in Dell?"
Good point
So maybe move the first bye week back to the week just before conference then? Anyway, I hadn’t even thought about how nice it will be for Honey Badger and his team to be with their families this week.
"If you don't want to work, become a reporter. That awful power, the public opinion of the nation, was created by a horde of self-complacent simpletons who failed at ditch digging and shoemaking and fetched up journalism on their way to the poorhouse." - Mark Twain
Snyder has said a bye week before conference starts is his preference
I bet he wouldn’t mind even going a week or 2 into conference first.
Agreed.
I believe this year was jenky because of going from 8 conference games to 9 and having to drop one of the already scheduled non-conference games.
Ideally, the bye would come in week 5 (4 games, bye week, then 8 games), but that would put it into the conference schedule. And that might not be a bad thing if we are going to continue opening against Baylor (I’m assuming they will not get another RGIII and won’t always be this challenging for us).

and by the sounds of it, it's likely Briles gets job offers left and right as well
Some speculate he’s holding out for the UT opening.
"Nor yet in Dell?"
If Baylor beats Longhorn this year
Briles might get his shot at that job pretty darn quick. Although I can’t see the big shots in Austin “stooping” to pick a former Houston and Baylor coach.

"Nor yet in Dell?"
Regarding the scheduling
I believe I have read in multiple places that TCU and WVU will not simply take over aTm and Mizzou schedule spots. The entire conference schedule is going to get overhauled again. So I guess that means it is possible, when they do this, there could be another situation where teams have to make a repeat visit to a team again next year (I sure hope we don’t have to play in Memorial Stadium or Lubbock for a 3rd consecutive game). I’m not exactly sure WHY TCU can’t just “replace” aTm in the conference schedule and WVU “replace” Mizzou, but that’s what I’ve read. And then, if we pick up two more teams in a year or two, we will have to play conference schedule upset all over again.
First to identify a TEWWT (so what if it was unintentional)
by Jeremy Sharp on Nov 22, 2011 12:16 PM CST up reply actions
I don't think Texas wants to play TCU on Thanksgiving, and there's probably some other games people would rather move around
It might make sense to have KU/KSU at the end of the year instead of the KU/MU game, for example, rather than just replacing it with a KU/WVU game.
I agree
now that Mizzou is gone, I think KSU/KU game should move to “rivalry week”. We have actually ended our season with Mizzou quite a few times, and played ISU at the front of the season.
I’m not opposed to monkeying with the schedules again, I just would hope that it can be done without any more repeat visits.

Boooo
I guess simply having TCU play UT, and WVU play KU that weekend would have been too easy.
Anyway, moving the Sunflower beatdown to the end of the season would be fine with me.
"If you don't want to work, become a reporter. That awful power, the public opinion of the nation, was created by a horde of self-complacent simpletons who failed at ditch digging and shoemaking and fetched up journalism on their way to the poorhouse." - Mark Twain
Alright I see it already.
We have to play UT at Darryl K again next year.

This is an excellent prediction - I'll bet they make that happen.
oh hail the Purple and White
Hadn't even thought about that.
And you’re right, if the rescheduling is going to cause duplicates again, then I bet certain people might try to make this happen. Although, wouldn’t they rather at least get beat on the road? Then they sort of have an excuse.
lol

Andy Staples has his power rankings up.
He was giving us tons of love (if I remember correctly) at the beginning of the season, but it’s starting to disappear. Has us at #19 this week, up from #20 last week… oddly, after our A&M win we dropped from #19 to #20, and apparently beating Texas was worth a whole spot to him since he raised us back to where we were 3 games ago.
I just don’t see his logic in how he’s been dealing with the Cats the last few weeks, and I really can’t see how he has some of the teams ahead of us that he does (Clemson, South Carolina, TCU).
I’m firmly convinced the national media does not take SOS into account nearly as often as they should when looking at the big picture, and the BIGXII continues to be underrated by nearly every journalist covering college football.
Either way, beat ISU and good things will happen!
maybe this legitimizes what that's worth, maybe it doesn't but...

There is a lot to play out before worrying
South Carolina could lose to Clemson, Georgia could lose at GT, Houston could lose at Tulsa, Michigan could lose to Ohio State, OU could….nevermind, Wisconsin could lose to Penn State. Any of these should move us up in the coaches and thus the BCS. The computers should be set at long as we don’t lose to Iowa State. I know most are guessing we are Cotton bound, but until after this weekend of hopeful chaos we can’t be sure of anything.

If Oregon loses the PAC championship game, they’d probably fall all the way down to the Alamo, though.
I really doubt that will happen. USC is the only decent team in the south division, and they aren’t playing.
