This story...
from the Washington Post about Michael Beasley is making news.…improper benefits and what not. Not really shocking, but curious what this means for KSU, probably nothing good.
Another article on it from Dan Wetzel. Guess this means we are/were big time now? I expect a championship within five years.
Couple of things.
I don’t know if this is going to really affect us. If we learned anything from Cam Newton, if the player doesn’t know anything about it, it’s all good baby. The claims state that when BEasy found out about the payments, he fired him. Now whether that’s how it really went down is up to the courts to decide.
It seems to make sense to me though. Aside from being just a 19 old kid with way too much money, if you read the claims and remember the struggles BEasy was having (on court and off) it all kind of makes sense. The kid was betrayed and sold by the only father figure he knew. I’d smoke a little pot too.
Beyond that, Delonte is gone and may or may not have known about all this. He was a couple years removed from the Assult. Speaking of the Assult, hopefully this is why we haven’t been getting Assault players lately, but I’m not sure what it means if Frank found out and said no more Assault guys, but didn’t report it.

When life hands you lemons, make grape juice. Let them wonder how the F*ck you did it.
I agree with you.
I have yet to find a smoking gun between KSU and Malone/Bell/Smith in this case.
Sports by Brooks is trying to connect us to it by Huggins hiring Hill to get Beasley to come to KSU. Well…duh. That’s how the game worked. We used a legal practice (unseemly or not is not part of this debate) to steer a kid here. What happened after that, as long as we didn’t participate in it and there’s no evidence we knew anything about it, means the worst that can happen is that we invalidate our wins from that year.
It kind of sucks because there’s an NCAA tournament appearance that we have to scratch off of the books, but whatever. That’s the price of playing poker in today’s college basketball.
Also, on the Malone thing, I think the rift probably started once Frank and Co. found out how Malone and Co. were using Mike. No one will ever be able to convince me that Mike wanted to go pro after one year. He genuinely loved it here. It was the first home he probably ever really knew. But all of those promises from Malone to Bell to Smith probably forced him to go, so he never really had any say in the matter. After that I’m sure a lot of the bad blood with Assault had a lot to do with Wally. I don’t know whether or not Malone had some sort of side gig going on with someone over Judge, but it would explain his anger over a lack of PT for Wally. It would also explain why Gary Williams was enraged when Wally came to Maryland with a “handler”, and he ended up retiring as a result of hating to be a part of the recruiting business any longer.

MB may have loved it at Manhattan, but I don't think this tangled mess was what really made him jump to the NBA.
I think it probably has more to do with the fact that he wouldn’t have been academically eligible for a second year from what I was told.
I’m not positive that was fact, but there were clear indications that he was in genuine grade trouble. Based on some of the storyline in the WaPo, he would have had some learning difficulties regardless of how smart he actually was.
If I'd known I was going to live this long, I'd have taken better care of myself.
I thought that was Walker
And Beasley was actually doing well not good, but well enough.
Bobby Hill: What's a meat examination team?
Hank Hill: It's like a debate team, only instead of doing something useless you get to grade the cut and quality of meat!
The Kevin Lockett interview
on 810 yesterday was interesting.
One of the highlights was his story about Turner Gill’s recruitment of Tyler. Basically Tyler was seriously considering KU, as they were one of the first to offer. Until Turner said something similar to… “I’m not sure how many receivers I’m going to be able to offer and I’m not sure where you’ll fit, so I can’t promise you I’ll be able to follow through on the offer.”
Although I appreciate Mr. Fowler's kind words
they seem kind of hollow. Allow me to paraphrase. We love Manhattan (I say this about every town/school I visit every week). OU was the story we were going to cover and now they are no longer a story. If you guys become a big national story in a couple weeks maybe we’ll see (PSYCHE! OREGON/STANFORD) but we are throwing you a bone on this week’s show (we prepared segments earlier this week assuming we were going to be in your town). Just don’t accuse us of being biased toward larger market teams. We are biased toward the team with the greatest national title potential first, the largest market second.
There are two components to GameDay. The LOCATION and the STORY. And guess what, you can cover whatever stories you want at any location. But the big deal for fans is the location!!! It’s “GameDay is comin’ to your ci-ty” not “GameDay is coverin’ your sto-ry”. Would I like my team’s game to be the game of the week? Yes. Does it in any way compare to the show coming to my town? Hell NO. You wanna come to Manhattan and spend the whole time swinging from Luck and Landry’s nuts, fine. But being your “backdrop” is a reward. And right now your rewarding a school that is not a national story and can’t make a bowl game because they are being punished by the NCAA. Was that ever a consideration when making their decision? Are they going to cover that story?
by Mrfphy on Oct 27, 2011 8:08 AM CDT reply actions 2 recs
Everything you said was pretty much dead on in the second paragraph...
But I think the general consensus is that after these next four games, our “story” won’t be much of one, and we’ll end up slinking down to 8-3 or 7-4, and we’ll just be a team that exceeded expectations as opposed to a real national story.
Whether or not that is the correct perception is moot. That is the perception, and even if we beat OU, due to the fact that they lost a game, at home, that they were supposed to win by 22 points, the story will not be how good KSU is, but how things are spinning out of control for OU. I mean they
onlybeat KU by 30, lost to Tech at home, and then go on the road and lose to the #8 KSU Wildcats. It’s a Catch 22 for us. We win, it invalidates them, and if we lose, it validates everyone who thinks this start was a byproduct of an easy schedule (which isn’t the case at all).
The only way this team gets validated is if we beat OSU on the road. Period. And even then, the story will be how down the Big 12 must be this year, and it won’t be about how good we are. No matter what the computers will ultimately say, the perception is that Clemson or some other team in an extremely weak conference (i.e. Stanford and Oregon) is better because they aren’t Kansas State.
I know Morse will yell at me for this, but there is an element of truth to it. I’m not whining about it, but it is what it is. I’ve observed it for too many years to know that it’s not just a coincidence.

I think the part that disappointed me in Fowler's explanation
was when he mentioned how they weren’t expecting USC to “upset” Notre Shame. Really, Chris? A Notre Shame team that is, what? 3-3? C’mon. That is weak sauce. The BCS rankings have KSU at #8 and OU at #9. Simply put, there is no better match-up this weekend, even with OU coming off a loss.
I like Chris Fowler, I respect Chris Fowler, and I understand there are a lot of moving parts in ESPN making its Gameday location decisions. But I’ve had a feeling for a long time that schools like KSU are held to a much higher level than supposed “national brand” schools (Michigan, Notre Shame, USC, Texas, OU, Nebraska, Florida, Alabama, LSU, etc) when it comes to stuff like this. Not only is it a good matchup, it’s a great story (Cinderalla ’Cats, old coaching partners Snyder-versus-Stoops, etc). ESPN whiffed badly on this one.

I'm not going to yell at you for being Debbie Downer or for playing the disrespect card.
I’m going to yell at you for being wrong. :)
If we win this week, yes, the invalidation of OU will be a theme, and frankly it’s a valid one. You’ve seen me harping on the softness of their receiving corps and Landry’s panic mode, I’m sure. But I think it’s just as likely that we’ll start getting seriously fellated, and the “OU wasn’t any good” crowd will be the vocal minority.
As for Oklahoma State, I’m sorry, but if we’re both unbeaten and we win that game, nobody’s going to be talking about how we won a weak conference unless everyone shits the bed down the pike.

I think OU is probably overrated for a number of reasons...
But whether or not someone will give us the proper credit for it or not is up for debate.
KSU is in that spot now where a win over someone won’t really leapfrog us much in the polls. If we beat OU, and I think there’s more than a fair chance of that happening, it will have been expected. People ahead of us need to start losing.
I will say that an OU win should validate us to the point where we should leapfrog any one loss team without question.

So I almost don't dare ask this question
But say we go 10-2 (which is what I’m expecting, wish I could be more confident) this year. We have Klein, Hubert, Pease, Wilson, Harper, Thompson, our TEs, some of the line, etc, etc. While we lose a lot on the D line, if Brown comes back he has a good host around him with Zim, Walker, Malone, Seau, Williams, Latui, Blackman, and I’m sorry but I’ve seen Tate Snyder hit so I’m going to include him. Plus the new guys on both sides of the ball.
So the question is: What will the national expectations be with most of a top 15/20 team back? Do we start out high or will we have to prove it again?
When life hands you lemons, make grape juice. Let them wonder how the F*ck you did it.
The guys who look at what you did and what's coming back will rank us highly.
The guys who fap to recruiting rankings won’t.

Weren't we generally ranked somewhere between 10-20 in the preseason when we were rolling?
I’d expect something like that. Higher if we win the bowl game.

With the caveat that if some guys like Kibble are drafted high, perception will be that the defense was bolstered by NFL talent...
And therefore was a fluke or something.

I remember KK mentioning once, I think it was in 2009
How Snyder has to be king of the “well that team just isn’t as good as we thought” comment following a victory over a favorite. I think he’s right.
How many times do we beat a team like an OU, who despite only having 1 loss, most perceive as being very talented (which I believe to be true), and then when the clock hits 00:00, and the other team has 2 losses (or whatever), and the story instantly becomes about how the losing team was a fraud, if lowly ole KSU was able to beat them?
"Nor yet in Dell?"
Exactly. There is no way in hell Gameday is coming to Manhattan when they can go suck Luck some more
OMG OREGON VS STANFORD! It’s the no defense game of the week!
I blame OU for pissing all over themselves at home, and I blame Gameday for ignoring that they’ll be at the Stanford vs Oregon game.

But (huge assumption alert) if we are undefeated when we play aTm
Wouldn’t that give them a chance to pimp the SEC? I would have to think that stands a good chance of leaping Stanford-Oregon (which, to be fair, is a much better game than Stanford-USC).
I will revise my initial belief that aTm could afford a loss. They probably have to win their next two games as well. However, I think there is enough of the “story” component there to make it more compelling than Stanford-Oregon, especially since we will be in the National Title conversation, even if most people don’t think we will make it in.
Of course, with TV execs making these decisions, you can never know. If it was Fox in charge of this decision they would just cancel GameDay and replace it with Heisman Contender: The Search for a Legend.

A&M at Undefeated KSU will DEFINITELY take precedence over Stanford-Oregon for one reason:
They’ve already been to Eugene this year, and they will have already covered Stanford once and Oregon twice.

By then, at 9-0, clearly in the Big 12 lead with three games to play...even my pessimistic self would probably say we get it.
But…NOT SO FAST MY FRIEND…would they turn down a huge Top 5ish battle between two teams like that…even if they’ve been there already this year?

Yeah.
They don’t like going to the same place twice in one year unless the second time there’s just no other option at all (i.e., the game is SO important it’s worth covering, and there’s no other game of relatively equal importance).

I love it!
“Heisman Contender: The Search for a Legend.” That being said, I think the talking heads were right about Suh two years ago.
Anyway, I’m sure if KSU is undefeated Gameday will be here, but I don’t know how many fans think that’s a possibility, even assuming a win this weekend over OU. That’s what pisses me off even more. Rather than come to Manhattan now, and then go to the Stanford vs Oregon game on the 12th, they’ll go suck Luck now, and then go suck Luck some more!

Oklahoma not doing much to dispel stereotypes of Oklahoma as being stupid
Network proposal confuses Oklahoma
They are confused why the Big 12 would be looking into a conference network. Boren must have fallen asleep during the Board of Directors meeting where they discussed it.
Would you like some Freys with that?
I'd like to know how a Tier 3 Network for OU impacts the idea for a Tier 2 network for twelve schools.
If OU can convince someone to pay them over $10 million a year to start a network that’s carried in those lucrative Oklahoma markets, I’ll eat my hat.

My understanding is that a conference network would not be Tier 2.
If I’m not mistaken, isn’t our Tier 2 our FOX contract? That’s a bigger deal than the conference network, which would be Tier 3.
The BIG network and the Pac12 regional networks are Tier 3, aren’t they?
Not sure why a B12 conference network would be different than that.
No. BTN is a Tier 2 Network. They are launching a digital network, BTN2, which will do Tier 3.
Tier 3 content that generally spills onto the networks are coaches shows, volleyball, baseball, etc.
That’s my understanding anyway.
My general thought/belief is that if we invite 12 teams, we need to rework the Fox deal anyway, therefore we just go to them and pitch a network that will make them more money in the long run, anyway.
(I realize I need to write a better post to help illustrate my point.)

But the real point to be taken from that article is this: The BIGXII is still a mess.
It’s pretty frustrating that none of our southern friends seem to know when to keep their mouths shut. The quotes from Pickens, Boren, and Castiglione in that article do not seem to be coming from anyone associated with a stabilized conference in which all the members are on the same page working together.
I mean, we just had a damn presidential meeting two days ago – how can we NOT all be on the same page?
And if we’re not all together yet, what’s so hard about saying, “No comment,” when asked a question to which an honest answer will make the conference look less unified? Especially right now, when we need to be doing everything in our power to show a united front?
I swear, this conference just can’t stop stepping on its own toes.

I'm feeling you on this
My thoughts exactly. What exactly are they talking about in these meetings? Which presidents are asleep or walk out of the room to hit the head when subject matters such as a network come up? And if they are in the room (David Boren), than why isn’t this information passed on to the athletic director?
I don’t get it: A united front and clear communications are the things the conference needs most desperately. Everyone understands this. And yet these supposedly smart individuals (university presidents, conference officials, ADs) can’t tell their left from their right. Mix that in with the way the WVU invite has been handled and you have a dysfunctional mess. (“Hey WVU, it’s the Big-12 here. Yes, you’re invited!” Ten hours later…“Ugh, hi, WVU? Yes? Well, it’s the Big-12 again. About that invite we talked about earlier….”)
