K-State Slate: 10.26.11
I forgot to post this earlier this week, but you probably saw it on other SB Nation sites. Version 1.1 of the SB Nation iPhone app is now available. And for those of you, like me, who have an Android device, fear not! The Android app will be available by the holidays. Perfect Christmas gift for yourself.
K-State Football
Defying the odds isn't a bad thing at K-State, which is a good thing because, as we all know, the odds on K-State have been, and still are, pretty long.
K-State's 2003 Big 12 championship trophy adorned the display case at Vanier yesterday. No word on whether that was a ploy for Oklahoma week or whether it was just replacing the Governor's Cup.
The next four weeks on K-State's schedule will be as difficult a four-game stretch as almost any school will face all season.
West Virginia
The deal is not done, but every indication is that West Virginia will announce it is joining the Big 12 in the near future. Welcome, 'Eers.
Robinette writes that travel costs will rise with West Virginia in the Big 12. I doubt the difference will be noticeable.
For some reason, Frank Martin is stoked about West Virginia joining the Big 12. I can't figure out why.
College Football
All kinds of good stuff at the mothership. Spencer's Alphabetical (including Bill Snyder and phenomenal Angry Paul Rhoads .gif), Bill's Numerical, BlogPoll (Bracket's absence from the Coulter/Kos standings should be solid proof that we're not being disrespected here), and Bill's Market Adjustments (again, featuring a shocking lack of disrespect for K-State).
The Missouri Saga f/k/a Conference Realignment
Brady Deaton has narrowed down Missouri's window for making a decision to either days or a week or two. Decisive leadership, that.

Call me petty, immature, unrational, or whatever.
But I’m disappointed to see TDWSNBN.
But again, there’s not rational hate here. Just hate for hate’s sake.
screw this, I should be sleeping anyway.
I am shocked, OUTRAGED, that KSU is not getting more disrespect!
Will the (lack of) disrespect never end!?

Gee, Robinett made a poor argument?
Color me surprised.
I like the West Virginia pickup. I’ll like it even more if we get to 12 teams by adding Louisville and (presuming Mizzou bolts) Cincinnati. I would have liked for PItt to have been among the teams added, but the ACC did a great job pulling the trigger with them and Syracuse.
But if the conference pulls the trigger on Notre Dame (or any school) for only a partial set of sports, that’s a huge mistake. The Big 12 Conference should be all or nothing.
Add Louisville and Bringham Dame...
I reject your reality and substitute my own.

No. No Brigham Dame. No partial memberships.
If we take Brigham Young, we take them for all sports. If Notre Dame won’t bring football, they don’t get to join us for anything.
by AMS on Oct 26, 2011 11:57 AM CDT up reply actions 1 recs
I don't think you're understanding Notre Dame's mindset, though.
They’re going to stay independent in football, unless circumstances force them not to. And the only circumstance I see forcing them to relinquish that would be four 16-team super conferences. I appreciate (and KIND of agree) with your sentiment, but I wouldn’t hate it at all if Pan’s Brigham Dame scenario came about.

And is BYU unwilling to bring non-football sports?
Because I’d rather see all BYU than BYU football/Notre Dame everything else.
ND fits the geographical profile better for the non-revs.

I want the Smiths back for this game!
Harper and Lockett have done well, but the more the merrier.
Vanier doesn’t have the 2003 trophy on display permanently? Why not?
A fun stat from Weber before the game on Saturday (I hope I heard this right) – No KSU football team has ever won 5 or more games by a TD or less in a season. This team has already done that (indeed, did it through 6 games). I don’t remember any of Snyders teams being good in close games. There was a 1 point win over the Nubs in 2000, and that’s all I remember for close wins. Close losses are UT at home, CU in Boulder, OU in 2000 conference title game.
"If you don't want to work, become a reporter. That awful power, the public opinion of the nation, was created by a horde of self-complacent simpletons who failed at ditch digging and shoemaking and fetched up journalism on their way to the poorhouse." - Mark Twain
And a preview of the game (weird editing notwithstanding) -
http://cfn.scout.com/2/1120143.html
“Statistically, the Sooner run defense is terrific, but it had problems with Missouri and its mobile quarterback, James Franklin, and it gave up yards to the Texas backs and was gouged in key moments by Texas Tech’s tandem of DeAndre Washington and Aaron Crawford. OU can be run on, but it’ll require patience and several big third down throws.” – I agree. OU is very talented, but they’re no LSU or Bama. I believe the Cats will be able to run, but it won’t likely be pretty, particularly early on.
However, I think the key to the game is how awful OU’s red-zone offense is, and how good the KSU red-zone defense has been. If the Cats make OU work (no more long TDs like against Griffin!), I think the Cats will win by forcing FG attempts by their not-great kicker.
It seems to me the preview is missing that Jones isn’t very good away from home. Yeah, KSU’s D isn’t as talented as FSU’s, but they’re healthy and they’re smart (if if they can’t always tackle), and Jones wasn’t impressive against FSU, or KU for that matter. I hope the Cats can get a pass rush early and whack Jones a couple of times, and the crowd stays up and angry.

For the most part, you are correct ...
Snyder teams did win close games in the early to mid 90’s … pre-Bishop, let’s call it. Off the top of my head, I can remember KSU winning close games @Minny, @OSU, ku in 1993-94. Won a nailbiter @Mizzou in 1994-95. Won @Cincy in a classic finish in 1995-96. Won @aTm and beat Tech at the wire in 1996-97.
Then Bishop came and (early breaking-in period notwithstanding), we started annihilating a lot of teams. One common thread among Snyder teams after that was that in the KSU losses, the team would get behind by multiple scores to the really good teams, claw its way back into the game, then lose by less than a TD, just running out of time in the end. It happened repeatedly.
But when those Snyder teams won, they usually kicked the crap out of the other guys.

Great memory
I was also thinking of the mid-1990s (particularly that wonderful, glorious 1993 season where K-State finally emerged from the shadows – or shall we say the catacombs of a deep basement? – to enter the college football conversation in a positive way). You pretty much nailed most of those tight games – including the comebacks in ’93 on the road against Minny and Okie State and the amazing final-play game at Cincy in ’95. There was also a huge comeback against Iowa State up in Ames in ’99; I think the final was 35-28 KSU, after the ’Cats were down something like 28-7 at the half.
And good point about the post-Bishop (I’ll call it post-Beasley, with the exception of OU in 2000) teams always rallying from a crazy deficit. The 2001 OU game in Norman in Ell Roberson’s first year as a starter leaps to mind.
by CT-K-Stater on Oct 26, 2011 10:04 AM CDT up reply actions
Another great comeback in '99 ...
KSU ran up a 21-0 deficit @OSU to start that game. I was actually at that game. Every other time you turned around, OSU was running into the endzone in the first quarter. “Heeeeere comes Bullet!” and a cowboy on a horse would come riding out to about midfield, turn around and go back off the field. It was a nightmare. Then all of the sudden KSU flipped a switch and curb stomped OSU for the last 3 quarters and won 44-21. Unbelievable.

Big 12 surprise: USF could be wild card
Basically it says that the Big 12 could pull a surprise move and invite USF. It never gives any factual indications that this has even been discussed, (not even “sources”), so it seems to me to be just wild non-factual speculation.
If it were to happen, though, it seems to me too much like the “Mount America” conference. A desperate move to attempt to ensure relevancy.

Apparently, they have NOT been invited, they have NOT been accepted, and some way, somehow, people think Mitch McConnell is involved somehow.

They're staring right back in the face of joining C-USA
I have a really cool idea for a 16 team C-USA with four pretty manageable pods. Heck, if the Big East really wanted to, they could still have an eleven or twelve team basketball conference with the football schools just playing in C-USA.

I'm HOPING that this is just a long chess match...
Right now, WVU would be #11, because, technically (and legally) Missouri is still #10. Should we add Louisville now, that would make #12.
IF, and I repeat IF, we’re really looking at Brigham Dame, should Missouri decide to stay, there would be no room for them.
Also, should we invite WVU and Louisville, AND the Big East drops the 27 month waiting period (which they will because that thing will dissolve as soon as we bring both of them in), we have absolutely ZERO leverage in exit fee negotiations with Missouri and Texas A&M.
There’s a lot in play here. My guess is that Mizzou is slow playing this because if we get a tenth team, they can negotiate a 2012 release pretty easily and for a greatly reduced buyout. We’re slow playing this because we want Missouri to pay a ton in exit fees, and we don’t know with 100% certainty what will play out with the 27 month waiting period for Big East schools, and we don’t want to be forced to take BYU if we don’t have to.
There are a lot of moving parts here.

I agree with you totally on that point. It’s pure and simple. They know the conference will want to immediately add somebody new. Quit playing games Mizzou, we all know you are gone! You may have noticed I’m keeping my mouth shut on the 10 v 12 issue. Mostly because it’s murky at best. I almost need a spread sheet to keep up, but if I think a minute there are 3 and a half options right now and I have no idea which will occur.
I will say this, of the 3.5 (4) options I know about, I wish Mizzou would just leave already. Because:
1. The absolute best option does not include them.
B. None of the options include USF, or Air Force.
Pi. You could end up looking like a fucking genius.
Sine. There are benefits that go well beyond the next 6 years.

Look at it this way...
If the B12 does dissolve, it’s one less school for another conference to choose. TCU, BYU, WVU, Louie, Cincy, ISU, and Baylor are not getting picked up before us should all of them find themselves playing football in the B12. For whatever reason the B1G has a hard on for Rutgers and if the Apocalypse is imminent and they go to 16, who else is left? They aren’t going to jump over states for UT and their baggage, ND MIGHT fold and join, but a pickup of Rut, KU, KSU and ND/?, seems reasonable with MU, Pitt and the Orangemen out of the picture.

Sometimes, they want to be able to sort internal shit out without denigrating the guys they’re sorting in the eyes of the coaches, if you know what I mean.

Yeah, I could see that.
But back in high school, whenever we had a problem with how someone was playing, we’d just pull them aside and tell them to get their shit together. We always had good teams (even getting second in state my senior year), but we never had a players only meeting. I’ve just always felt like those did more harm than good.

People view team-only meetings like that scene with James VanDerBeek in Varsity Blues...
The guys all get together, have a big rah rah session about playing hard, committing to the team, focusing, etc. Then they charge the field to some AC/DC song and win by thirty.
When the reality is that 99% of the time, when you call a players-only meeting, something within the chemistry of your team is broken, and you’re throwing gasoline on the fire in hopes of putting it out.
If anything, this is good news for us. While they sit down and have a “Come to Jesus” meeting and call each other out, our guys are just going about their extremely structured, extremely organized, and highly professional business.
We’re going to win this weekend, by the way. I feel really confident about that.

Also, you’re spot on with your analogy about players-only meetings.

I'm with you.
I don’t see them lighting us up…and I think we get 1 non-offensive TDs, 2 rushing TDs, and a passing TD, with maybe a field goal or two.

They will only score the same amount as KU?
I love our Cats but this seems unlikely.

KU scored a late, cheap TD.
Also, we held Mizzou to 3 points until Cosh went all prevent on us. I don’t think Snyder lets him do that this week.
"An invasion of armies can be resisted, but not an idea whose time has come." *Victor Hugo*
IMO
That last KU score shouldn’t count when comparing the teams. It was against our band. The band won’t see the field in pads against OU, most likely, so OUs 21 would be more impressive than KUs 21, in this scenario.
However I agree that I think OU is more likely than not to score more than that.

Sorry Deaton but Mizzou's decision is emotional...
Deaton referenced the nostalgia felt by many for Missouri’s traditions in the Big Six, Big Eight and Big 12 conferences. But he said Missouri’s conference membership could not be decided by emotion.
"Our head has to outweigh our heart in achieving some of the objectives," Deaton said, "because the heart won’t necessarily in this case lead to where the University is going and needs to be going."

Keep beating that “stability” drum.
The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather in a lack of will. - Vince Lombardi
That's been the worst part of the whole realignment saga...
People using PR spin and victimization techniques to make these decisions seem like they had no choice.
I get the Pitt/Syracuse defections. The Big East was just woefully behind in terms of TV contracts, and even though they had rights coming up, it probably wasn’t going to get dramatically better. Their best case scenario was to equal what the ACC was getting, which was already woefully starting to fall behind everyone else.
If you believe Jon Wilner, who has been pretty plugged in for some reason, Missouri’s decision is pretty much based on very large and powerful donors who have made big financial promises should Mizzou head to the SEC. We know that Warren Erdmann isn’t in favor of the move, and it’s been reported that Deaton isn’t either. Some of the quotes he’s thrown out there support that. It seems like there’s a majority of folks in Missouri who want this move to be made, and the most vocal supporters are ones with big, big pockets filled with cash.
I’m honestly not upset if people would just say, “Hey, we’re looking at the landscape, and this is a business decision. We believe a move to Conference X would give us increased exposure to a larger TV audience, Conference X has laid out a very attractive plan for revenue generation going forward that my current conference doesn’t have (or isn’t willing to entertain), and our fans have been very vocal about making this move.” Why people have to play the ‘stability’ card, or why they have to go out and blame other schools is petty and pointless. The Big 12 is stable. For God’s sakes, we’ve got schools fighting to come here. Our revenue is competitive with other BCS conferences. To go out and perpetuate that this is about stability is intellectually dishonest.

I'd be even more willing to accept it,
if they just came out and said something like, “Seven of our largest ten donors have offered huge donations if we leave, so we’re leaving.” I mean, I know it’s not going to happen, but at least it’d be more honest.

See even there Pan...Deaton sends mixed messages:
Time and again Deaton referred to concerns of "future security, stability," as being more important than financial considerations.

So if money is not the object and currently the only thing truly making your conference unstable is your university wanting to leave then they have abject PR failure.

I found Bill's odds of winning article interesting ..
until I was that, according to whatever numbers he is using, Iowa State has a much better chance of beating Ok State than we do (7% to 15%). Now that folks is some amazing disrespect for a 7-0 team.
Huh?
I’m sure that is the result of it being home vs. away. Home games are always a little bit easier to win.
This sure sounds like disrespect to me…
They have no margin for error whatsoever, but … guess what: they have had no margin for error so far, too, and are 7-0. The same numbers would have given them a 0.4-percent chance of going undefeated through seven games, yet here they are. They are probably just as likely to finish 8-4 as 12-0, but are you going to doubt them? Because I am scared to at this point.
Let’s just leave the disrespect card alone for now, shall we?
Would you like some Freys with that?

but it's so fun the play the disrespect card.
I’m guessing the he is coming up with these numbers from his Beyond the Boxscore method, and we have looked like a bottom 20 team offensively in those numbers.
That's where we are as a fanbase right now
We don’t like being disrespected, but because we always feel disrespected, we end up kind of creating our own disrespect even when we are being respected.
The interesting thing I got from Bill was this:
They are probably just as likely to finish 8-4 as 12-0, but are you going to doubt them?
He is saying an 8-4 finish is NOT likely.

Hey numbers? Your mamma’s so dumb that she tried to take the square root of negative one and then divide it by zero.
That is interesting
I understand his computers don’t like the Cats because of how the Cats have won, but I wonder how much of that difference has to do with OSU being home versus away.

I like this from the CFN game preview.
It’s not like the Sooners haven’t been special over the last eight years, but the 35-7 loss to the Wildcats in the infamous 2003 title game was the official marking point of the end of the mojo, and they haven’t been quite the same.

The K-state pass defense doesn't work only in the Nickle
When Safeties are relied upon to match speed of hybrid TE like Agnew from Mizzou on a 1 on 1 island. Otherwise our pass defense is pretty solid. Love the corners. Sound tacklers out in space. And having safety support is helpful.
