Country Roads, Take Me Home ... to the Big 12?
This guy seems to think West Virginia is a done deal.
Pete Thamel is coming around to that notion, as well.

If West Virginia was a university located in Missouri or Arkansas, it would have been at the top of our expansion list, even over TCU.
As it is, it’s only slightly puzzling from a geographic perspective and otherwise a strong upgrade from the middling, mediocre Meth Aggies.
You see, the Eers have actually been to Final Fours and BCS bowls. They’ve even WON BCS bowls. Wowzers.
I also like letting this leak out early, as it totally undercuts the impending SEC circle-jerk in College Station this weekend. Don’t let any redneck splooge get on your tie, Gus!
I should add that I also think we're going to cut a deal to get BYU in next year.
We need to stay at 10 until WVU joins in 2014. We’re just not going to announce it until we fleece Missouri for every cent we can get.
The only other possibility is that Pitt, Syracuse and WVU all will press the Big East to let them out early, but Marinatto’s been pretty ironclad on that so far.
Either scenario is probably good news for Louisville, which probably will panic now and make its own application to the Big 12 shortly.
Dude, we are going to have a MONSTER B-Ball conference!
If all of that works out.
I think if ND is willing to bring non-revenue here, BYU will come as football only.

well said, couldn't agree any more
TCU is a pretty fair trade for aTm (both have 1 nat’l title in their entire history), as The Frogs have been more relevant since the inception of the Big 12, and…
WVU is by far an upgrade over Mizzou in both categories as well. Wait, except softball.

I rec'd this, for the softball mockery alone.

Incoming rant fueled by months of silently watching this nonsense, please run for cover:
It’s so sad and pathetic to me that we’ve reduced to being excited at the prospect of inviting these couch-burning goons from halfway across the country. Guess that’s just the order of the day in this absurd cluster-eff we call “realignment.”
When the Big 12 added TCU, it seemed like it was being the voice of reason in this mess by adding a team that was, SHOCKER, actually from the same region as the rest of the conference and, GASP, had an extensive history with the other members. This new move just seems to be contributing to this new diaspora problem. A cross country flight to watch a football game in the land of the black lung is probably not that appealing to an overwhelming majority of the Big 12 fanbases so good luck selling those tickets, WV.
Wish I would have gone to a game in Columbia when I had the chance, I will definitely miss watching K-State/Mizzou games with my family from the other side of the border. It’s such a shame that the entire state has apparently gone inexplicably mad. I kept expecting, at every step of this “exit process” that someone to come to their senses but this completely irrational idea just kept going and going.
Okay, rant over. Thanks for indulging me. Maybe I should go find a new hobby, I bet stamp collecting or knitting is totally less dramatic than this nonsense, haha.

I should add that
I would of been totally alright with Louisville, it would have made much more geographic and relatively more cultural sense.

Who's to say Louisville isn't on their way shortly?

The point is we are doing SOMETHING.
And if it takes WVU to hold this thing together for a little while until we can add a couple more schools, I’m all for that.
We are in a better position now than we were 24 hours ago, and that’s what matters to me.
And although the travel sucks, it’s not as bad for us as it will be for them (WVU).
And considering they still get more money...
Well they should be fine.

Been to Columbia for a game. You didn't miss a thing.
But, I’d rather have Mizzou in the conference just because I think losing 100-year-old associations for no reason is just sad. Worse yet, losing those associations for bad reasons that not only don’t benefit anyone, but hurt multiple parties (in this case, Mizzou football and Kansas City).
That said, I won’t miss Mizzou in the least. It’s like a sometimes annoying neighbor decided to set himself on fire. He’s dead. You won’t really miss him at all, but seeing him set himself on fire didn’t do you or your neighborhood much good, either.

Ah yes, crazed self immolation.
That’s pretty much the best way of summing things up I could possibly imagine
This is an awesome analogy.
So I rec’ed it.

If we get Louisville (and ND?) they won't seem like quite such a geographic outlier
But I have to admit I’m not real excited about adding a bunch of hillbillies – or at least that’s the impression I have of their university. Hopefully I’m proven wrong about that. They are clearly the right school in terms of football, though.
Awesome.
An upgrade over Tigger’s retarded cousins in athletics, even if I’m not a fan of the distance.

It's amusing to think
That the game in Wichita could be a preview of things to come. Will we have a cermony for it haha?

Hank Hill: It's like a debate team, only instead of doing something useless you get to grade the cut and quality of meat!
Or will one team start up a game on everyone else next year when conference play starts?

Anybody else find it ironic that we just added a team
known as the Mountaineers to a conference without mountains?
"Nor yet in Dell?"
Hey!
The Kiamichis are as tall (and have a higher prominence) than most of the Appalachians!

I didn't even know what the Kiamichis were till I looked them up...

Kiamichis sounds like a slang term for a venereal disease

What about the Ozark Mountains?
I know, they aren’t quite the same, but still technically mountains.
And well played with the Kiamichis.

Well, that depends on how you define "in the conference".
Guadalupe Mountains are almost 8K high.
Then again, “Mount Sunflower” isn’t even a friggin’ hill, so…

From the esteemed Wikipedia:
Amenities include a picnic table, a sunflower sculpture made from railroad spikes, and a plaque that states “nothing happened here in 1897.”
….
The state of Kansas gradually increases in elevation from the east to the west. As such, “Mount” Sunflower, while the highest point in the state in terms of elevation, is indistinguishable from the surrounding terrain.
I had always thought it was at least a tall hill…

Indistinguishable from the surrounding terrain...
…in other words, exactly like the rest of Western Kansas.

This is pretty much true.
Once, when I was in shop class in high school, I looked out the back window of the shop, and (due to refraction or some such thing), I could see a town 9 or 10 miles away CLEARLY. I mean, I always knew it was flat, but that was pretty crazy.
That said, there is some sand hill country around there as well. We used to drive 3-wheelers and dune buggies on them.

The way I describe Mount Sunflower to people is this:
Take a paper towel, and set it on the table. Set it flat, but don’t smooth it out.
You see that spot there, where it’s bubbled just a little, and it’s about two millimeters higher than the rest? That’s Mount Sunflower.

After reading about this yesterday, I had to point out to a Mizzou-grad co-worker
He was completely caught off-guard by the reports of WVU to the conference. I told him that’s because WVU did its conference search right, quietly and out of the public eye. Unlike Mizzou, who spent the past two years publicly begging to go to the B1G then the SEC.
and what was Mizzou-grad co-worker's response?
