K-State Slate: 10.10.11
Postgame Reaction will be up later tonight.
K-State Football
After a 5-0 start, K-State is starting to change perceptions.
The Wildcats capitalized on Missouri mistakes to take a 24-17 victory Saturday.
No late defensive stand was needed in this one, although an overly conservative defense in the fourth quarter made things more interesting than necessary.
Missouri's Dominique Hamilton unexpectedly provided some extra motivation for K-State when talking about how he expected Missouri's defense to "dominate" against K-State's rushing attack.
K-State Volleyball
The Wildcats got another win to move to 3-2 in Big 12 Conference play, sweeping Texas Tech in Lubbock.
Big 12 Football
Oklahoma annihilated Texas, 55-17, in the Red River Shootout.
Texas A&M started fast and held on to beat Texas Tech, 45-40. Texas Tech won the "dude, gross" competition, though, by vandalizing one of Texas A&M's buses with "excrement" and spray-painted vulgarities.
Baylor got back on track with a 49-26 win over Iowa State.
KU set more records for defensive futility in a 70-28 loss to Oklahoma State.
Conference Realignment
Dan Beebe said he suggested equal revenue sharing and a grant of media rights years ago. Good thing we needed to see two schools leave, have OU and Texas turned down by the Pac-12, and fire the commissioner who suggested those changes before those changes were actually made.
Chuck Neinas said Missouri has not been given a deadline, and won't be unless The Decision II drags on to the end of the academic year.
Air Force may be headed to the Big East after turning down the Big 12. This raises one major question in my mind: why the hell were we going after Air Force? Are we really that far down the list? I mean, if we're down to Air Force, why not just grab Houston?

I call bullspit on Air Force to the Big East, unless Louisville and Cincy are already signed and delivered to the league

Well the talk is football only
Apparently they have started sending out feelers for their other teams in the Missouri Valley and WAC, now that seems doable and in that case it would likely happen because Navy and Army would be coming along. But yeah it’s not happening unless Louisville and Cincy are fully committed. It won’t happen because I can’t imagine Louisville and Cincy actually committing themselves to that if they think they have a shot at the Big 12. But if Cincy didn’t look like it was coming would Louisville abandon them? In a good and just college sports world, they wouldn’t. But the world we live in they would.

Somebody, somewhere, said that the Big East needs eight members that play football and participate in all sports to maintain AQ
Meaning they need to keep the current six plus add at least two more all sports members. UCF and Temple would finish that off, but I would guess they’re going to try to include a bunch of football only members to get a CCG.

Somebody, somewhere is full of crap.
I can no longer find the link, but Bill Hancock was asked about this.
There is no mechanism to strip a school of its AQ during the life of the current contract. The only method of altering the current deal is the well-discussed means by which the MWC was hoping to gain an AQ.
When this contract expires, the decision on who will be offered the ability to sign a new one will be a simple business decision, and if the Big East looks like a steaming pile of doodoo, it won’t matter whether they have 6 teams or 8 teams or 23 teams. Now, if they DON’T have at least 8 teams, there will be resistance to allowing them an AQ, certainly, but since it’s a brand new contract, there’s no “rules” governing it.
And, of course, none of this matters for any sport other than football, since the Big East has threeve dozen non-football members.

I doubt that the Big 12 made anything even close to an offer to AF.
Most likely, it was a simple, “Hey, you’re one of several schools we’re looking at”, which AF has then spun into this whole, “Yeah, we turned down the Big 12” thing.

It sounded a little bogus to me as well.
We’re Texas.
We don’t derive our value or self-definition from conference affiliation.
If that strikes people as cocky, so what? It’s also true. None of us will chant our conference’s name when we have an off year and Texas Tech wins their bowl game. Our definition of self comes from us – not our conference, not our rivals, not media perception.

On Air Force...
Two things…
1) I think, as jonfmorse has said, I think the conference would like the academic panache of having a service academy in the fold.
2) It’s geographically contiguous, which, for us, appears to be important
3) I don’t think they were ever offered. I think they had a conversation to gauge interest, and AF knew immediately that it was probably a dumb idea for both parties to engage in that farce.
I think if we go to twelve, and especially if we really are interested in 14, that you’re going to have a WTF school in there that’s purely involved for academic reasons. Tulane, Air Force, etc. It would appear that we’re most definitely interested in raising the academic profile of this conference.

I agree, Pan
I do think the Big-12 is simply not interested in going to 14, though. They have a hard enough time just getting around to adding one school – forget adding 4-5 more. The sentiment seems to be 10 or 12, although I think staying at 10 would be a mistake.

I still think 10 + 2 is best option
Stay at 10 for the duration of the tier 1 contract, and have 2 schools lined up to join in 2015-16 similar to the big 12 being formed in 1994 and not starting until 1996 in order that it makes it respectable to other conferences (shows we aren’t like the others were to us), and gives the institutions time to give their conferences fair warnings and leaving fees a minimum. But the important thing is to get those teams inked in, and official.

having a bottom feeder, while not great from an outsiders perspective
Helps the tradition rich programs continue to be that. You throw in too many tradition rich programs (i.e. SEC: Arkansas, UT, GA, FL, Bama, Auburn, aTm, WVU, LSU) and all of the sudden the odds of multiple titles for said schools drastically decreases and increases the odds of oblivion. So if the Big 12 added a bottom feeder, while not sexy, keeps teams like UT and OU happy and the gauntlet closer to 5 of 10(12) teams rather than 10 of 10(12) teams. Though I think Cinci and Louisville could serve as a fine bottom feeders for the time being, and puts them in a group of “could rise up here or there” with the likes of KSU, ISU, BU, TT.
"Nor yet in Dell?"
Right now, I'm thinking the conference might stick to 10 unless they get BYU
Options:
10 including MU
10 – MU + Lousiville
10 + BYU + Louisville
10 – MU + BYU
maybe 10 – MU + Lousiville + BYU + West Virginia
If they do go to 12, here’s an interesting option:
10 – MU + Louisville. Then add UCF and South Florida to make 12. They don’t make much geographic sense, which appears to be important, so I’m guessing this doesn’t even get considered. But I don’t think they’re any farther away than West Virginia or BYU are, and they’d open up some prime Florida recruiting for us.
We are a 3 point underdog again!

I said this awhile ago. All of our teams seem to thrive the most when we are not respected. I dono’t believe the KSU women’s basketball team was getting much respect the year they won the conference title (tournament, I believe).
We all saw what happened with the men’s basketball team last year when we had preseason respect.
I much prefer our teams playing with a chip on their shoulder.

Re: Air Force, I think this is getting blown out of proportion.
The AF AD didn’t even say the Big 12 offered. There’s nothing wrong with putting out expansion feelers to get a lay of the land. If the worst case scenario happened and a series of rejections led to having to add a school like AF to get to ten, then the conference should know who on that tier of schools would actually be interested.
This is getting spun into “the Big 12 was turned down” when the actual quote is in fact complimentary to the Big 12. The guy is saying AF couldn’t compete in the Big 12 at a level that would be responsible to his school so they couldn’t in good conscience join. It has nothing to do with stability, the LHN, or anything else negative. In context there is nothing wrong here – no offer, no rejection, a compliment paid to the quality of play in the conference, and an indication that Schulz and co are doing their job and figuring out all the possible options for expansion.

Wall Street Journal has its own take on the remaining unbeatens
KSU gets some ink there. Not sure if its behind a paywall, however (we get it here at work). They cite our ultimate goal as 10 wins and our major weakness as “no passing game”. I think that last bit might be a little too harsh. Certainly we don’t have a consistent downfield passing game or put up a lot of passing yards, but that’s partially due to our offensive philosophy of running the ball first and controlling the clock.
by CT-K-Stater on Oct 10, 2011 11:40 AM CDT up reply actions
I look at our passing game as an extension of the running game.
When viewed through that move-the-chains type of prism, 107 attempts for 635 yards (5.9 ypa) isn’t nearly so troublesome.
"An invasion of armies can be resisted, but not an idea whose time has come." *Victor Hugo*
I'm much with you here
I think to a casual observer or someone who just looks at our box scores they see a weak passing game. But that doesn’t present a complete picture. Granted, the ability to put up 300 yards of passing or score quickly through the air when an opponent is expecting the medium-to-deep passing routes remains to be seen, but there has been no reason yet for K-State to deviate from its script. So its rather a moot point.

He was sacked 4 times, for 27 yards lost.

This is a work in progress
see my response below. CK needs to feel more comfortable in the pocket and reading his progressions, the line needs to improve on picking up the blitz (got blown up on one blitz by Mizzou), and the receivers have to get some separation and make the tough catches. This is an aspect of our offense that still has room to grow – it isn’t something where there are signs we have a hard ceiling we’re already bumping our heads up against.
by CT-K-Stater on Oct 10, 2011 12:06 PM CDT up reply actions
HBCK seems to be a gutty thrower ...
who can come up with a throw when you need it more.
But it would really pick the O up a notch if he could find a way to drop a deep ball somewhere in the vicinity of our guys. Brod Smith and Harper will beat their men for the ball. Put some air under it when they’re behind everyone (even if it’s only a half step). We start hitting that once or twice a game, it will do some serious good for the running and short passing games, too.
by Itchy n Scratchy on Oct 10, 2011 12:15 PM CDT up reply actions
Totally agree
Adding that dimension to the offense would be a huge lift. Klein seems to have developed some chemistry with Harper, who has gotten open deep repeatedly. The next step is to hit on some of those deep throws consistently, while bringing Brod into the mix more.

We're not going to do it often, because it's not our game ...
But when we do it, he has to give our guy a shot at it. I’m sure he can do that, he just hasn’t really clicked with it yet. And I’m not talking about the post route he’s hit Harper on multiple occasions … he doesn’t have to put air under that one. I mean the over-the-top throws.

Honestly, we won't really need to the next two weeks.
We’re facing the two worst run defenses in the conference in Tech and KU.
I think we’ll throw against Tech to keep them honest.
I think we’ll throw about five times against KU because we simply won’t need to. It will probably look like the Texas game plan from last year.

Which is why I say
he needs to feel more comfortable reading his progressions. That could also read: He needs to get better at reading his progressions. I think many of us – including myself numerous times in game threads – have pointed out his tendency to lock in on his primary receiver to the detriment of his secondary reads. This is definitely an aspect of his game that needs to improve.
I also am not comfortable with the occasional slow delivery and the occasional taking of a sack where getting rid of the ball would have been the logical decision. But again, it’s a work in progress. There are some areas where I think he still has a bit of a ceiling to reach and that whatever current struggles remain in the passing game are not completely insurmountable. That’s all I’m saying.
It doesn't really matter if the problems were caused by the QB or line play
The end result is the same – a questionable passing game.
Although the problems with the line would probably be more fixable than a QB that just couldn’t throw.
I'm not in disagreement with you on this, Jon
I just view it as an aspect of the game that remains a work in progress. We haven’t had to totally open it up so far, even in the Miami game. As I said above, the ability to consistently push the ball downfield through the air remains to be seen, but so long as we’ve kept games within 10 points of an opponent and been able to run the ball somewhat consistently K-State has been able to stick to the strengths of its QB and O-line.
That said, I do still have concerns about our medium- to deep-passing game. Not a total lack of confidence, but still unsure whether we can be consistent pushing the ball downfield when opponents expect us to attack through the air. Against teams like Oklahoma and Okie State we may be forced to do this.

I'll admit it, guys....
I’m kind of 50/50 on caring if Mizzou goes at this point. We can lose them and gain the Ohio Valley, which, truthfully, has a larger population than the State of Missouri:
Louisville: 1.4 million
Cincinnati: 2.2 million
Pittsburgh: 2.4 million
Total: 6.0 million
That doesn’t include the entire state of West Virginia, other parts of Kentucky, Ohio, etc. It opens up new recruiting regions for us as well.
I’m going to admit it. This is starting to grow on me. Also, the basketball would be much, much, much better than what we’ve had in the past if WVU, Louisville, and Cincy join this conference. They, unlike Mizzou and A&M, have been to Final Fours. All of them have. And we’d half of the North would have been coached by Huggins, which would make for some amazing story lines in the next few years.
Also, I’d only imagine the Ohio Valley Trio would be much better conference members (in terms of desire to be here) than the four that left. None of them would be under the Texas thrall either. Also, we’ll still keep KC with KSU and KU in the fold, so that’s not an issue. We’ll lose St. Louis, but no one there cares about anything other than their stupid baseball team, so no big loss.

So I am getting to the point where I too don’t care if Mizzou goes. But I think we stay at 10 if Mizzou stays, and that I don’t like. I want to get to 12.

I don't think so
I think he was implying, why are you worried about the weak/lame additions the Big East is looking to add to its conference. I would be more worried about a press release talking about stricter exiting fees for Big East schools. Doesn’t matter how many teams they add, we can still poach ’em.
"Nor yet in Dell?"
The problem is that one of the byproducts of this is that they'll most likely up exit fees...
And it’s not like the BE teams we want are swimming in money.
I mean, we can ask them now when it’s basically free, or we can hem-haw around while they solidify and put those schools in a tough spot because we decided to wait on Mizzou.
And even if Maranetto makes them stay for 27 months, the addition of TCU means we’ll have at least 8 conference games the next two years should Missouri go.

It may be the case that if we don’t act soon we have to agree to pay part of their exit fees in order to get them to agree to migrate west.

I doubt if those three schools are going to sign any commitment that includes huge exit fees.
The writing is on the wall for the Big East as an AQ football conference.
"An invasion of armies can be resisted, but not an idea whose time has come." *Victor Hugo*
They're in a panic mode, though...
Schools that want to join will want commitment, and commitment is higher exit fees. So, that will need to be voted on before they expand.
And if their futures are as ambiguous in a week or two as they are today, you bet they may try to rebuild that crap league with Temple, UCF, ECU, etc. because, at that point, it will be the only firm offer on the table, and they’ll have to do something.
Missouri is really screwing everyone here. We need to move forward without them.

They’re out there, without an invite, pursuing options that don’t yet exist.

Onother reason, forget Mizzou, is the Big East is scrambling to save their conference and the long we wait the harder it will be for us.

because there is no reason for them to rush it. If some major exploding of the Big XII had somehow happened the last 4 or 5 days they could still say “no”… if you can take the time, why not? Interesting write up in ESPN
the kudos to HCBS are rolling in…personally I thought he did a really great job in 2009 just getting us to 6-6 and back in the Big-12 North division conversation. But better late than never in Act II. Here’s the entire text since the article is, I believe, behind a paywall:
Myth No. 2: Kansas State’s smoke-and-mirrors act is a flash in the pan
From 1934 until the arrival of Bill Snyder in 1989, Kansas State football suffered in ways that even longtime Northwestern and Vanderbilt fans can only imagine in nightmares. No coach left Manhattan with a winning record. There were no bowls, no ranked teams and certainly no conference championships. In more than half a century, the Wildcats had managed just four winning seasons. The misery included 20 seasons with one or two wins and eight winless campaigns — two of which immediately preceded Snyder’s hiring.
Snyder came to Kansas State after a long stint as Hayden Fry’s offensive coordinator at Iowa. Fry’s mentoring makes Snyder — by way of Frank Broyles and Bobby Dodd — a part of legendary Tennessee coach Robert Neyland’s coaching tree. Snyder’s “16 values” are a direct descendant of Neyland’s “Seven Maxims,” and the General’s influence can still be seen decades later in Snyder’s fanatical secrecy and his innovative and thorough reconnaissance of opponents.
Known as a top offensive mind, it didn’t take long for Snyder to prove he was a top head coach as well. He had Kansas State winning in his third year, in bowl games by his fifth and a play away from the national championship game in his ninth.
From 1997-2003, Snyder’s Wildcats won 11 games six times in seven years, pulling down three North titles and one Big 12 championship. Now in the third year of his second stint with the team, Snyder has his current squad showing some of the hallmarks of his past teams.
Often, when a team is habitually outgained in its wins, it’s a red flag marking unsustainable fortune.
Other times, it’s a sign that superior coaching has produced a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. Kansas State has won three straight as underdogs while getting outgained, but that’s the norm for Snyder teams, which habitually excel at finding the hidden yardage that wins games. Avoiding and forcing turnovers, winning the field position struggle, excellent third down and red zone play and the ability to score in all three phases are qualities that this year’s Wildcats are starting to share with past Kansas State editions.
Perhaps the strongest measure of Snyder’s ability to consistently produce a “more than meets the eye” team is this: Against the most accurate measure of expectations available — the point spread — Snyder’s Kansas State teams have posted just two losing seasons in his 21 years.
Snyder is not a way-past-his-prime old geezer cooking up a brief Cinderella story on the verge of his second retirement. He’s a Hall of Famer who has accomplished the impossible and belongs at the head table with the likes of Bryant, Paterno, Stagg and Rockne. He’s also a very young 72, as sharp as ever, and is not going away again anytime soon.
Kansas State’s blueprint won’t change, and the talent will keep improving. There is no reason the Wildcats won’t win eight to 10 games for the rest of Snyder’s tenure. And the first big spike isn’t this season, but next, when quarterback Collin Klein and linebacker Arthur Brown return as seniors to lead more experienced and talented units. Snyder has a junior-and-sophomore dominated team at 5-0 despite poor depth at running back and on both lines. And the Wildcats’ special teams aren’t even close to their usual standards yet. Only one all-conference-caliber senior departs next year, and a few of the right junior college players could have Kansas State among the Big 12 favorites in 2012.
Don’t let the box scores or the recruiting ratings trick you into selling this team short. Kansas State will eventually lose some games this year, but the surprising start is not just a one-time offer. The Wildcats are poised to be a serious player in the Big 12 for the rest of the decade.

Wow, what an article
8-10 wins every year? I’d love it. I think the basement expectations for KSU should be a bowl game every year with the occasional shot at the big time (like MU recently).

Once things get rolling again (and it appears they might be doing so now),
I expect 1993-2003 levels of success.
"An invasion of armies can be resisted, but not an idea whose time has come." *Victor Hugo*
I am always baffled why 4-5 star kids don't jump on his bandwagon...
especially Kansas kids in general. Why would you go to anywhere other than OU, UT or KSU in our conference (maybe TCU now)? The records clearly indicate that this is the place to have long term success. If we had just 8-14 4-5 star athletes to go along with JUCOs and other so called “lesser” talent we would give OU a run for their money year in and out. Any ideas why our brand of football is not getting through to potential candidates?

My only "off the cuff guess"
without researching this (I lack the ability/resources to properly do so) relates the lack of 4-5 star recruits coming to KSU to how few of the KSU ‘greats’ go on/went on to fat NFL contracts/careers. Sure, there are some/many – Sproles, Nelson, Newman, et al – but much fewer than from the “big time” college football powerhouses.
Thinking and typing the above saddens me… :-/

he’d say that he thinks Stoops Jr. threw that game as well.
"An invasion of armies can be resisted, but not an idea whose time has come." *Victor Hugo*

In terms of what would make sense in an ideal world
your take is perfectly reasonable. Stoops is, as you say above, a solid recruiter and, more-often-than-not (except in 1998) a good d-coordinator.
My guess would be some of the anger between HCBS and Bobby Stoops has long ago subsided (not the competitiveness between the two, mind you, just the bitterness), but I wouldn’t bet on that being the case with Mike Stoops.
If Bishop does not fumble we win.

Hello K-State People
I had a mostly-enjoyable trip to Manhattan, including a beer with TB and some kind of fantastic baked french-toast thing with cream cheese and purple syrzzp.
Then I went up to the press box to overhear the MO Governor ragging on Kietzman.
Then stuff happened for 4 hours. I don’t remember much of that (thanks syrzzp!).
Then the interminable drive back to CoMo with OK Computer on a loop. I think I made the 4-hour drive in 87 minutes.
I hope to make the drive back over for a game at Bramledge.
