RPI WATCH: 1/21/2011

As is usual, Thursday night's games represented a mixed bag of results for K-State's RPI and SOS.

Positives included North Florida climbing back to .500 in conference play, UMKC's double-overtime survival of IUPUI, Virginia Tech's surprisingly dominant win at Maryland and Washington State's crushing of Arizona State.

I suppose you could lump Florida's 45-40 victory at Auburn in there, too, but I didn't because it was one of the ugliest basketball games I've ever witnessed in my life.

The Gators set a new record-low for scoring in the Billy Donovan era and set offensive basketball back about 50 years with their 2-of-21 mark from 3-point range with two minutes remaining in the game.

Like Florida, Gonzaga trailed for most of the game in its visit to Santa Clara, a place from which the Bulldogs have escaped several times before with narrow victories. Well, when you play with fire too much, you eventually get burned.

This time, the fire-starter was Broncos guard Kevin Foster, who scored a career-high 36 points on 11-of-20 shooting and buried nearly every shot in the final five minutes in blowing open what had been a close game to that point.

A similarly disappointing result was Presbyterian's overtime loss at home to High Point.
