RPI WATCH: 1/18/2011

So, what did we learn last night?

How about the fact that the gulf between Kansas and Kansas State hasn't looked this wide in five years, despite what we thought was an improving team with a better talent level across the board that it had five years ago?

One of these programs actually is a program — meaning, it sustains continuity through multiple seasons via good recruiting year after year, in addition to continual player improvement in the off-seasons.

The other is a flailing mess, desperately seeking any sense of continuity or basic basketball effectiveness.

All of which is a short way of saying, come Jan. 29, hide your women and you children, because what KU is prepping to do to us in Lawrence will not be fit for public consumption.

Other than the Big 12 games, it was a mixed bag of red-hot, sweaty SWAC-tion.

Texas Southern continued its unbeaten tear through the conference, validating what I thought was a pretty good team when it smoked our defense on the day after Thanksgiving.

(Although in retrospect, it could have been that our defense just sucks most of the time.)

There is a yin to every yang, of course, and Texas Southern's antithesis is 1-15 Alcorn State, which continued its state of near-constant futility by dropping a home game against our old buddies from Pine Bluff, Ark.
