Open Game Thread: BCS National Championship Game

OK, I know, we don't do this very often here at BOTC. But I'm pretty excited for this BCS National Championship Game. I'm going to anticipate that maybe some of you are less excited. If that's the case, I'm going to do my best to get you excited, via the power of the written word.

First, Black Heart Gold Pants discusses why tonight's game is a changing of the guard. There are several reasons for this. Obviously, Oregon is a traditional second-tier program that is playing for a national title. Auburn isn't quite the historic darkhorse that the Ducks are, but the Tigers haven't won a national championship since the decade my dad was born (no, 2005 doesn't count). Beyond the schools, the teams both embody the new age of offense in college football, running up-tempo, run-based spread offenses.

The latter point brings me to the best preview of the game you can read. Chris Brown of Smart Football checks in with Dr. Saturday to deconstruct the matchup. Read it. You'll understand what's going on, even if it's happening at warp speed.

And if that's not enough, there's always the BOTC Bowl Pick 'Em. I have Oregon for 13 points. So, Go Ducks!

Newton’s dad shopping him around and the Oregon player punching the Boise State player in the face last season. And of course the carousel of uniforms that are the Ducks.

Speaking of Boise

Any thoughts on the UT hire of the Boise OC?

by GTcat on Jan 10, 2011 8:20 PM CST up reply actions

Seems like probably a good hire

Boise is always good on offense with generally less talent than most major-conference programs.

I’ll never understand why UT doesn’t go after guys like Malzahn and Leach, though. Image issues aside, can you imagine those offenses with UT’s athletes?

I thought it was a good hire too, just curious how

“dangerous” it sounds for the rest of the league. IMO, hard to tell, but I’d think with the tools that coach oughta fair alright.

If we get Leavitt...

…I’m going to be less concerned about what other teams have on offense.

“If we get Leavitt” (fill in the blank)

if we get the guy, do you think it might help spark a few big quick scores recruiting wise? Also does Billy Cosh free up another scholarship?

by GTcat on Jan 10, 2011 8:34 PM CST up reply actions

You'll have to ask Pan or Bracket...

…they’re our resident scholarship counting experts. My assumption is yes, we get another scholarship with Cosh transferring.

I hope Leavitt is out recruiting right now, doing the whole “Bob Huggins University” thing.

Bowl Pick 'em .... top 6 possibles.

                        Total Max Pick
CHITOWN 442 462 O(20)
BracketCat 439 460 O(21)
Dead Last 433 463 A(30)
Bellybusters 416 451 O(35)
ECU 409 444 A(35)
O/U 411 435 O(24)

if OR wins:
CHITown 462, Bracket 460, Bellybusters 451 and O/U at 435 followed by Dead Last 433
If Aub wins:
Dead last 463, ECU 444, CHITOWN 442, Bracket 439 (then it gets messy)

Corrections welcomed.

That would definitely go against the grain

but honestly, how many 3-9 coaches get interviewed? In a manner where they’d even have the opportunity?

Oh so close.

And if we’re super-duper-extraordinarily lucky, Bo Pelini will go to LSU and Nebraska will hire their fourth choice to lead them fearlessly into the Big 10.
