Around SBN: Knicks Beat Lakers With Familiar Strategy

For those who don't know, there's been a serious push by John Currie, Mike Clark and the athletic department this summer to gain new members for the Ahearn Fund.

There's also been an unofficial campaign under way at GoPowercat.com, if you're interested in learning more.

Despite the thousands of alumni K-State has produced, only 6,000 or so are members of the Ahearn Fund — even though you can become a full member for as little as $5 a month.

I myself recently got off the fence and finally joined, although I'd prefer not to disclose the amount of my rather meager donation.

If you want to make sure Frank Martin gets that new practice facility he so desperately needs, or you're tired of the lack of bathrooms in the upper level of Bill Snyder Family Stadium, now would be a great time to put your money where your mouth is.

You also can call (785) 532-7715 to speak to a live human.

The process is easy enough — it's making people aware of the need that is a problem.

Damn! When am I going to be able to use my ouija board? :-)

I’m on the $5 plan, there’s no shame in it.

Quick Math

There are 192,989 graduates (according to the Alumni Association 2009 annual report) living around the world. If everyone of them gave at least $5 a month ($60 a year), the fund would bring in a minimum of $11,579,340 before major gifts.

$10 a month would be $23,158,680…a year.

If you extrapolated the current giving to the 192,989 (minus the $4,000,000 this year in $500,000+ gifts) your talking $321,648,333…a year. Yes I know it is unrealistic to make such an assumption, but I’m trying to prove a point.

Which is: The fall of the Big XII should have scared the bejesus out of everyone. If everyone would get off their proverbial duffs and chip in a few bucks a month we can control our destiny when the talks come up again. If Ahern were to bring in $25-30 million a year, we may not win championships (see OSU) but we would be in the conversation by vertue of our fans dedication. Fans = TV sets. One donor giving all the money doesn’t carry the weight of tens of thousands (again, see OSU). If we could swagger into a league’s office and say 100,000 donors contribute to our university every year, that’s power. If a person donates to the athletic fund, chances are they’re going to tune into a game or two, or all.

And that’s my Friday morning rant.

I know, it's crazy how many alumni don't donate.

Now that I do, I can sit on my high horse and judge them… :-D
