Frank Martin Extension Press Conference

I don't want to overshadow a nice post-game wrap up by TB, but you all need to see this.

It's very heart-felt and genuine.  It goes to show the bond that has developed between Frank Martin and Kansas State.  I think many, many people feel like this could be the biggest victory of the year so far.

Congrats on the Signing!

Of course it’s a great deal for K-State, but it’s also a great thing for the Big 12. I’m sure this will help continue the rekindled rivalry between KU and K-State.

Congrats!

A rekindled rivalry between Kansas and Kansas State is good for the state of Kansas and the Big 12 Conference...

This is a historic rivalry that was dormant for way, way too long, and the ratings for both basketball games this year, and the highly competitive football game in the fall, shows the kind of regional and national interest in the Sunflower Showdown.

It is disingenuous to believe that the biggest rivalry, and most important rivalry, in this conference exists between Texas and Oklahoma. That is simply not the case. When you look at the trio of Kansas, Kansas State, and Missouri, you will be hard pressed to find a series of rivalries that goes back farther with more historical significance. It’s good for the North to have such fierce rivalries because it allows us to have the spotlight for a while, and it makes the conference stronger when the North division can hold its own in terms of national interest.

Some of the best basketball in the country is played within a four hour stretch of interstate highway between Manhattan, KS and Columbia, MO. And the long-term commitments of Bill Self, Mike Anderson, and Frank Martin will do nothing but continue that trend and make the North Division the dominant basketball division in this conference year in and year out.

Along with that has to come promotion of these rivalries from Dallas.

The nationally non-televised game between #2 KU and #5 K-State was nothing short of a tragedy. I would be interested in knowing when the last time such a match-up occurred and was not shown. The Big 12 really, really, needs to address this in short order in all sports. Mr. Beebe?

What needs to happen is that the Big 12 Tournament needs to be in KC every single year...

And the football game needs to be in Dallas.

You have a very, very nice arena in the heart of downtown KC, a city that lives and breathes college basketball and for a time was the epicenter of the game itself, and a lot of support from said city.

For football, you have the Sistine Chapel of football stadiums in the city where your Big 12 offices reside.

Every year can be planned around those locations. It can become tradition. It’s no secret that the North schools favor basketball (and prop the conference up in that regard), and the South schools unabashedly favor football. We may as well embrace that.

Great idea

Arrowhead is nice and all, but you’re right. KC hosts the Bball tourney, Jerry-World the football championship. Too bad stupid petty politics won’t make it that easy.

Wow

There isn’t too much else to say. Glad this is taken care of. Wouldn’t want anyone else coaching at KSU.

It's a big day for KSU basketball

and I hope it works out for you guys, but we’ve seen this footage countless times in college athletics. If a UCLA, Kentucky or Michigan State were to come calling, the likelihood is that Martin would be gone in a heartbeat. However, my own Hawkeyes have a football coach who has eschewed opportunity in favor of loyalty and happiness, so a “true love” relationship is possible in college sports, just not common.

Less memorable than Sam Okey's Hawkeye career.

Luckily the contract somewhat keeps Martin

from leaving in the next year, maybe two(buyout amount.) However, after that, who knows. KSU may nosedive and Frank would not be a sought after commodity. Or…KSU continues its upwards trajectory and a Big Boy will come calling. The KSU homer in me wants to think that it will take a HUGE contract to get him outta Manhattan now. The emotion and passion displayed at the conference confirmed what i had suspected for a while. He feels tremendously grateful for the opportunities KSU has given him and his family and the support during the media storm afterwards.

Ultimately he may realize that he can take KSU only so far, so he would need to move on to have anymore success. I would just hope he would be honest and upfront, and from what Frank has shown so far, i would expect nothing less.

No apologies necessary

We appreciate Frank’s hard work, and this contract extension has been more than earned.

Think back a couple years ago, to when Ron Prince’s contract extension was announced. It really came out of the blue for everyone. Nobody was on the rooftops shouting that Prince needed an extension and raise, and then all of a sudden he got one. We rationalized it as fans have a tendency to do, but it didn’t feel right, and as it turned out, it wasn’t right. Contrast that with now, where people have been making “Pay Frank” shirts and certain KC radio hosts can’t talk about anything else. John Currie has been put under needless pressure over this thanks to the 24-hour news cycle, but he got the job done and now we can go on about our lives.

We'll carry the banner high!

Glad to see this happen...

He’s a little crazy at times and at first I wasn’t a fan, but it’s hard to argue with what Frank Martin has done and I’ve grown to respect his methods. He is who he is, he’s unapologetic about it and it get’s results. He’s about as passionate as any coach in the league and I’m glad to see he’ll be sticking around K-State for a while longer. Should mean more good things for the rivalry and the Big 12 North.
