RPI WATCH: 12/02/2010
Wednesday night was a perfect storm of fecal matter for the Wildcats' RPI.
The lowlight of the night was Virginia Tech's failure to capitalize on home-court advantage, a depleted Purdue team and just plain desperation in order to seize a must-win game against the Boilermakers in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge.
Given a chance to win it outright, the Hokies instead pulled a Mizzou and let it go to overtime, where JaJuan Johnson — who had been destroying the Hokies single-handedly in the paint all night — put things to rest. So much for quality wins in a tougher schedule — VPI is 4-3 (0-3 in "statement games"), plays in a weak ACC and appears NIT-bound.
Follow that up with Florida's embarrassing flop in Orlando against Central Florida and determination to make Marcus Jordan — yes, Michael's son — look like a miniature version of the Jumpman himself, and you have the makings of an awful night.
But wait — it gets worse.
Loyola Chicago suffered its first loss of the season — at home, no less — to the hated Butler Bulldogs, while Iowa State also lost its first game of the year at Northern Iowa, proving once more that the Panthers are the preeminent program in the state. Cap it off with Oklahoma's fourth straight loss and you have a recipe for a night of heavy drinking.
At least Duke took care of Michigan State (albeit in ugly fashion), James Madison continued its post-Manhattan tear and UNLV won in dominating fashion on the road against a decent Missouri Valley opponent. Small consolation.

Vexing as those losses are ...
I don’t really think any of it will matter in the big picture. KSU’s rpi is going to be outstanding at the end of the year, provided we win like a top 5-10 team should. It’s not going to keep KSU out of a 1-seed, if it comes to that … you need to take home regular season conference championships (and a conference tourney final runs) to get 1-seeds. Or take some serious quality-win scalps and runner-up conference performances to grab 2-seeds. The rpi will be high enough to not be a factor.
If KSU is a bubble team, it may matter, but I think the rpi will still be good. We’re playing so many good non-cons in this schedule (as opposed to nearly everyone else), as long as we win our share, the rpi will be there. Obviously, we all expect to win more than our share.
It’s still interesting to follow day-to-day.

I was counting on Virginia Tech to be a decent quality win. At this rate, Loyola might be a better win.
Just rank speculation from me (especially given VPI's recent struggles against quality opponents) ...
I still think VPI ends up a quality win for us (meaning top 50 rpi … which seems to be the standard measure for that kind of thing nowadays). VPI has lost to a murderer’s row of @KSU, UNLV (neutral court), and Purdue … all of which will be rpi giants. I think they’re a “buy low” right now. But, I could see them wallowing in the mire for the whole season as a on/off the bubble team.
UNLV is really showing some things. That is going to be one hell of a fight for us in KC.

I do think VPI as top-25 rpi by the end of the season is a longshot ...
But when you look at the rpi rankings, even at the end of the year, the top 15-25 can by mystifying … kind of a crapshoot to get an rpi top-25 win, unless you beat a whale.

Agreed.
Especially with two currently undefeated teams left in the non-con, as well as a Big XII schedule with five teams in the Top 25. While VT and Florida are seemingly dead-set on not holding up their end of the bargain, I do think that by the end of the season we will have played one of the hardest schedules. And if RPI/SOS actually becomes something we have to count on to get into the tournament, then I’ll be far more worried about what has gone wrong for the season than I will RPI.
Keep up the good work Bracket, these posts are one of my few respites from studying for my law finals.
I'm studying for law finals. I'm at Arizona State. You?
I’m a 1L. Got Civ Pro on the 7th, Torts on the 9th, Contracts on the 13th.
I'm actually a 2L at KU (I know, I know)
But I’m also getting a Masters at the Med Center in KC, so I’ve got a final every weekday from tomorrow to next Thursday.
First year classes are usually the toughest though, and I bet the weather is at least nice at ASU.
It was actually hot today. High 70s this weekend.
I can’t really blame you for going to KU for law if you have to stay in Kansas.
Ahh, memories
Good luck, gentlemen.
We'll carry the banner high!

Musburger!
They were replaying the V-Tech game this morning and I randomly changed the channel past it right as this was happening. I got on my 360 and recorded it on my phone. I couldn’t believe it. It is an exchange between Musburger and Knight.
For those of us currently unable to access YouTube,
what happened?!?

Musburger is cracking up, telling Knight he loves him, then says:
“You are as stubborn an a-hole as I’ve ever been with.” Said “a-hole” not the actual profanity. All in all a strange exchange.

wants to eat that person!!! (talking about your other video clip on youtube)
Haha wow.
I have no idea how I heard what I heard initially but that’s what I heard. Probably more fitting…

I'm neither of those.
I’m getting my Master’s in Academic Advising with an emphasis on working with college athletes. Not sure that makes me BETTER than you guys, but definitely COOLER! :)

Fire Chris Cosh!
Fran is calling the KU game
Last year I was a fan of Fran calling games—- lets see if it carries into this year…
Tyrel Reed is on fire
kid hasnt shot worth a crap all year and now he has 11 of KUs 19
I am kryptonite
Any team I pay attention to loses. The first time I watch the Chefs all year, they loose at the Colts. I start paying attention to WSU at the end of last bball season and they wet the bed against the MVC bottom feeders. Don’t watch the KSU vs Gonzaga game and KSU wins easily, watch part of the KSU vs Dook game and Pullen flops.
I don’t pay attention to the UCLA game, UCLA leads. I pay attention, UCLA loses. Great.
Fuck KU.
Fire Chris Cosh!
That was the worst bailout call ever. No possession. Threw up a circus act shot while out of control.
Then a terrible call sends KU to the line with no time left (.07) secs. Unbelievable.
Concurred
That was a bs way to end the game and he was charging around reckless, practically just punched the ball towards the hoop.

Trust me, none of us wanted to win that way
But the way the last few minutes went, we deserved the win. Kind of poetic justice we got that after a lot of questionable calls, crazy threes from UCLA (especially the last one), and all the layups and freethrows we blew late.
I hate winning that way, but it happened. Long season, you’ll win a couple “are you serious that really happened” games

I'd say it was about even
On who deserved to win, however ya’ll are definitely better than what you showed tonight. Though I’d say that last “crazy” 3 was a pretty decent look and was a sweet one, not sure how “crazy” it was. Also blown layups and free throws don’t really give you the right for “justice”
And I would agree on the “Are you serious that really happened” game…we had one vs Presbyterian.

Well justice was a poor word
But from my crimson and blue glasses, there was no way we shoulda been in that position had we just taken advantage of some simple bunny shots and played better on the line.
Remember, before the tying 3, we inbounded the ball up 3 with 8 seconds left preparing to get fouled. Reed then pooped his pants on the baseline (shoulda called timeout). So we shouldn’t have been in that position. But you are right, part of the game.
We are better than that, but have some flaws, namely post defense and free throw shooting. But its early, stuff like this, Presbyterian, etc happens. KSU is obviously a lot better than a narrow win to Presbyterian. Crazy stuff happens early

Early season kinks still need to be ironed out for both teams
to be at the level they should be at come Big 12 play. Having Selby will certainly help you guys. I think both teams are right on pace despite not having flawless play thus far.
I think that foul was totally legitimate at any other point in the game. If that happens a minute into the game it’s a foul no questions asked. I guess then it’s really just which school of thought the ref belongs to – a foul is a foul regardless of when it occurs or a foul in the final minute or so of a close game will need to be a “deserved” foul. Apparently the ref tonight was in the first camp.
I wanted KU to win for the strength of the Big 12, but can see why UCLA was frustrated given there was a 1% chance that out of control play was going to result in points otherwise. But when they look at the tape they’ll see there certainly was foulworthy contact made.
From the way my KU frenemies talk...
You’d think our guys are only that good, and apparently Duke could have beat us by 40.
