RPI WATCH: 12/10/2010

Not too much happened last night, compared to the information overload that was Wednesday night.

Oklahoma finally stopped a five-game losing streak by outlasting Gardner-Webb in Norman. Even as Texas Tech languishes at 5-5 and debates whether to fire its coach before Big 12 play even begins, Oklahoma's hoping to get back to 5-5. Yikes.

In other interesting developments, Florida trailed Kent State late in the first half — at home. But the Gators rallied shortly after halftime to win by a comfortable margin. Billy Donovan has a lot of talent, but there are significant weaknesses up and down the lineup relating to team play on offense and defense. That's a winnable game next week.

Nationally, formerly ranked Temple rushed the court after beating top-10 Georgetown. Clearly, the Hoyas were overrated, right? Oh, wait, it's still December and good teams sometimes lose tough road games. Derp.

And Xavier avenged two consecutive losses to Butler and extended the nation's second-longest home court winning streak (trailing only you-know-who) by canning two free throws with three seconds left in an ugly 51-49 game.

Call me a prick, but how fitting was it to watch Butler lose on a desperation heave that bounced off the rim as the buzzer sounded — again? Chortle.

maybe we will show up in the place that must not be named this year.

Last year’s road game was a disappointment after the great game in the OoD.

I like that HCFM is scheduling supposedly tough environment road games. Not sure anything really compares to the toughest environments in the Big 12, but at least he is wanting to try acclimatize the team to hostile environments.

Well off the top of my head...

Duke at Cameron and Carolina at the Dean Dome come to mind. But I believe the Big 12 has at least 6 tough home arenas.

I am really NOT liking how KSU isn't doing anything, and yet the SOS and RPI keep falling

I know it will all even out, but good grief, maybe that stuff shouldn’t be updated every day?

Blame Gonzaga and Virginia Tech for sucking.

Plus Alcorn State and Texas Southern are two of the worst teams on our schedule, and they’re overweighted right now.

Playing Florida and UNLV will rocket us back up to a top-10 RPI and a top-30 SOS, I predict.

They’re our best two non-conference opponents not named Duke.

by BracketCat on Dec 10, 2010 1:24 PM CST up reply actions

Which will then fall again once we play UMKC, North Florida, and Savannah State right?

Anyhow, playing the Big 12 schedule (minus CU, Texas Tech, OU for now) will keep us near the top. No worries from me though about the schedule. It’s the free throws at the end of close games I will be worried about.

Yeah, but we lack "elite" opponents right now. Those two would qualify.

They carry a lot of statistical weight in the RPI, both because of their records and because they have played very good schedules, especially UNLV.

Sure the Rebels can win

I’m not over impressed by the Cats so far this year, but they’ve managed to beat some decent, but not good, opponents, same for UNLV.

I felt dirty, but yeah, I was kinda happy when the Dookies beat Butler.

I know, I know, I should NOT take pleasure in Butler’s pain, but I just felt like their having beaten us was more about that horrendous call that sent the Xavier game into OT than it was about them. And I felt like they’d stolen our place in the NC game. Illogical, I know.

Completely logical

While we certainly didn’t play well enough to win, Butler had a once-in-a-lifetime season. We’ll get to the Final Four long before they do it again, I suspect.

It’s perfectly natural and normal to hate the teams that knock you out of the NCAA Tournament. It’s why I still have an unexplainable, seething rage whenever I see Badger Bo Ryan, too.

Check this out...

Lunardis’ Bracketology has us in the Southwestern region, in the same round with Wichita State in Washington D.C. I know it’s near on impossible that would actually happen especially considering how early in the season it being. Still how intense would that be to possibly play Wichita State in the 2nd round of the NCAA tourney.

I saw that as well

And yes, that would be pretty cool, but even better if they were on the other half of that region so we could meet up in the Elite Eight. There could be three Kansas teams in the Sweet Sixteen this year.

Is it just me or does WSU seem overrated this year? I don't think they've beaten anybody with a pulse yet

Of course, UConn has surprised everyone, and SDSU is pretty darned good, but still, I’m not impressed.

Fire Chris Cosh!

by Sean T on Dec 11, 2010 10:55 AM CST up reply actions

Exactly.

They were HOPING to get a signature win out in Maui, and they came pretty close with UCONN, but to no avail. Not really their fault they got the scrubs the rest of the way. And I was really hoping they would have beaten SDSU.

I’m afraid they may have to get the MVC autobid to get into the tournament.

by Jeremy Sharp on Dec 11, 2010 12:45 PM CST up reply actions

Sigh...

I still think it would be in both schools’ best interest to set up at least one home-and-home swap. I’d like to see an annual series, but I’ll take what I can get.

WSU would have absolutely nothing to lose, and they’re a well-enough respected team that even a loss to them once in a while wouldn’t be especially bad for K-State’s reputation.

by AMS on Dec 11, 2010 8:01 AM CST up reply actions

We'll do it if KU will do it.

by BracketCat on Dec 11, 2010 9:23 AM CST up reply actions

I know what you are saying

but why couldn’t WE be the ones to make the leap and start an annual series with WSU first? Then KU would look kind of silly if they didn’t want to play the other “big time” basketball program in the state on a regular basis. They can continue playing UMKC, ESU, FHSU, and Washburn.

by Jeremy Sharp on Dec 11, 2010 1:09 PM CST up reply actions

Uh, we had a 4-year series with WSU under Wooly.

Won 3 straight, I believe. KU hardly noticed.

Also, Frank is pissed at Marshall for talking about the “secret scrimmages” with the media. Safe to say WuShock will be on his bad side for a while.

Thinks it gives them a nice opportunity to play in a place like Bramlage.

We don’t wanna give up that rivalry do we?

Personally

I think a WSU regular series would be much more meaningful for both schools than the series with Washburn. I’m sure Washburn might feel differently though. Or Emporia State, or Fort Hays State. I totally get why we play those schools, but to me it seems really silly to play WSU as infrequently as we do.

I think so

I remember playing them when I was there (I think), and I was there from 98-03.

I agree with everyone who has suggested that KSU and KU both do home and home annual series with WSU. Of all the teams that KU and KSU seem to play on a fairly regular basis, I think WSU is a better opponent, and would do wonders for the State as a whole. For WSU they would probably want to play KU and KSU as road games in alternating years. I think it would be a fun little 3 way rivalry kind of thing. If you could figure out how to get TWO games with each school every year (so each team played each other twice), you could have a “sunflower Cup” or something who went to the team that had the best overall record against the ther two teams (would likely end up in Lawrence most years, but who knows, it might help with in-state recruits). I’m just thinking out loud here. I guess what I might do if I was the basketball czar. lol

by Jeremy Sharp on Dec 11, 2010 1:01 PM CST up reply actions

Recruiting is exactly why they don't do it.

If you give WSU an elevated status and could help them recruit. The first time a kid from Wichita picks WSU because he can compete for a championship, play KU and KSU, and play in the tourney without leaving home the series would be over forever.

Along this same topic

I have been trying to think of opponents that would be a good draw for a neutral site game at Intrust Bank Arena in Wichita. Ideally it would be a non-conference game, because who in the Big 12 wants to give up home court advantage…

The one that jumps out at me would be Tulsa. It would still be more of a Wildcat crowd, but wouldn’t be as lopsided as if we played WSU there (in WSU’s favor). Tulsa isn’t horrible (better than Alcorn, or Savannah State, etc). I’m not aware of any connections with KSU and Tulsa though (I guess there don’t have to be any though).

Oral Roberts might be another one that would work.

I saw something mentioned in an article quite some time ago that Kruger said he would like to play in Wichita. That would be cool too, but I was thinking it would be neat if we could get a team that might actually draw a decent number of their fans as well.

Anyone else have any other ideas?

by Jeremy Sharp on Dec 11, 2010 12:53 PM CST reply actions

I doubt their could be any sort of big draw...

Of Tulsa or ORU fans(they’re just not going to travel for anything except an NCAA tourney maybe), my best guess would still be likely Wichita State. I know it’s in Wichita but I don’t think we would be that badly outnumbered if each school was given an allotment of tickets to sell. I bet K-State fans would be just as eager to play Wichita State as Wichita State fans are us.

That was my absolute first thought

but again, the Roundhouse is a pretty nice arena in the first place. I was just thinking it is kinda hokey to play a neutral site game in Wichita against WSU (kinda like when we played UNLV in Vegas at Orleans Arena…yeah, a game on the Rebels’ home court probably would have been a bit tougher, I think it would have meant a little more too).

I guess that is the problem with Wichita…the fanbases are pretty much WSU, KSU, and KU, and there isn’t a ton to do in Wichita to draw people for reasons other than the game.

I would LOVE to see Wichita as a NCAA tournament location in the future though. I know that is one thing they were banking on (pun kind of intended) when they decided to build it. Need to get some bball events there first though to show it can be done well. Maybe we need to have the Big 12 tournament there once to let them show what they can do (hey, it’s been at the Ford Center in OKC, so why couldn’t it be in Wichita?).

by Jeremy Sharp on Dec 11, 2010 1:07 PM CST up reply actions

Wichita though...

Is quite a bit pokier than OKC or KC…though I guess you can’t knock it till you try it. How much does Intrust hold anyway?

12,000 or thereabouts. It might not be that big though.

And yes, Wichita can be kind of dinky, but I like it. I’m from Derby originally. I live in Atlanta now, but to be honest, I would rather be back in Kansas. I guess that’s just what I am used to.

AMEN!

I was NOT one of those kids who “couldn’t wait to get out of Kansas”. My job brought me to Atlanta upon graduating from KSU.

It’s the little things that I miss though. Being able to see the stars at night is one that I never thought of until I moved here. If you think the “glow” from Wichita is bad (that is what I thought growing up in Derby)…

And the “smog index” on the weather!?!? WTF!?!?

And even the things that Kansans tend to complain about while in Kansas…the weather. I really miss experiencing 4 distinct seasons. I guess it would be even less variety if I lived in Florida though.

I just did a little research.

The general description says “up to 15,000 seat capacity” (but that could be for a concert).

And they are actually a host site for NCAA Women’s tournament in 2011. I guess that is another way to get their foot in the door.

The Big 12 tourny would be a pretty big coup for Wichita though. I would love to see it there (even if it was only once every 10 years or something).

But I highly doubt it, it’s just not in a big enough arena in a big enough market. Sprint Center has holds 18,555, and I mean thats big enough for most of the teams but not if K-State or KU are playing in the final.
