RPI WATCH: 11/21/2010
There were some interesting developments Saturday that you might not have noticed if you were wrapped up in football all day, like I was.
For instance, James Madison and Presbyterian both boosted our profile with nice road wins. Meanwhile, Loyola Chicago is gaining steam, posting its fifth straight win.
That could be a tricky road game for us next month.
UNLV probably had the most significant victory of the day, outlasting Wisconsin's slow-down game and home-conference refs to net a nice November win.
North Florida had been playing well to this point, but the Ospreys ran into a black-and-gold buzz saw in Columbia.
Missouri forced a school-record 34 turnovers and shut North Florida out for the final eight minutes en route to a 96-58 ass-whooping. Now that's how you finish off an over-matched opponent, Cats.
Savannah State and Colorado each fell on the road in overtime, with the latter being the most notable.
The Buffaloes' host, San Francisco, tied the game in the extra period with 2.4 seconds remaining, then everything turned ugly. CU pulled a Chris Webber by calling a timeout with none left, resulting in two USF technical free throws and the win. As far as I can tell, the Buffs have Alec Burks, Cory Higgins and no one else.

I confess ignorance
as to the actual mathematical workings behind RPI, so maybe someone can help me out here:
Is Gonzaga’s RPI going to skyrocket simply as a result of stepping on the court with us, win or lose?
My new blog: Those Other Guys. Critiques welcome.
Well I don't know about skyrocket since our RPI isn't that high yet, but it should help.
A big component of the RPI is Strength of Schedule. The RPI numbers right now are extremely skewed since a lot of the supposed top teams haven’t played too many formidable opponents. The RPI won’t start looking more realistic until the start or a few games into the conference slate.
A good example of how SOS is factored into the RPI would be Oklahoma State the past few seasons. A few years back they played a bunch of really good (RPI) teams in the non-confrence and only won, I believe, 1 of them. We had the better overall record and did better in the conference, but they made the NCAA tourney because of a higher RPI than us. It’s a good and bad system of evaluation teams.
College basketball and college football are completely different, where SOS is more important in CBB and wins are more important in CFB.
Surgeon General's Warning: K-State-Mizzou basketball may increase the risk of high blood pressure. Please consult your doctor prior to watching any of these games.
Is the fixation on RPI a desire to "justify" a high seed in the NCAA tournament?
Or preparation for anger if said high seed doesn’t materialize?
Is there a point to this post?
Or are you just trying to start an argument?

I'm not trying to start an argument.
I do find it odd that fans of the number three ranked team in the country are concerned about RPI. RPI is generally tracked/followed by those concerned about whether their team will make the tournament. Not ones who expect a high seed befitting a strong, deserving team.
It’s your blog, and of course the internets needs content, but it seemed to me this pot is building a defense of/or argument for a high seed in the tourney if you are not as successful as your expectations demand.
It seems like you're trolling for an argument because "RPI Watch" is a BracketCat staple.
And as far as I can tell, BC does it because he is just genuinely, brazenly in love with college basketball.

I think it just gives some perspective on the opponents as well.
While RPI shouldn’t matter too much for KSU, it’s still fun to watch as the season goes on. imo.
P.S I don’t think you were trolling btw.

I don't think s/he was trolling now either.
But the way the initial post was phrased, it seemed they were just looking to start an argument.

He, thank you.
There was a little intent to needle in my post, but not of the outward, “YOU SUCK” variety. More like, “Really guys?”
I’m not a KSU alum and I haven’t been around here longer than the 12 angry men/Big 12 parody, so I wasn’t aware that this was a regular seasonal feature.
Anyway. Good luck in your season. I hope for you that on selection Sunday RPI is not a factor (Sincerely). Enjoy it no matter what happens.
As I side note, I wish RPI played more of a role in the selection of the BCS bowls. Then we would see an end to I-A vs. I-AA match ups as well as SEC teams might actually play an out of conference game out of their state of residence. // rambling.
Hey welcome back.
Relax guys, I’ll vouch for MSU.
The RPI watch started as a “will we make it” type feature. Now it is like a dailyish opportunity to follow the BBall team and those that we play. If we were taking it serious we wouldn’t be concerned with the RPI till Feb.
For instance, right now I hate Presbyterian, but I also hope they win out their season and I have a convenient way to follow them with the RPI Watch.

I will say this week will be difficult.
There is no scenario where I root for Duke…at least there hasn’t been…So what do I do this week? A KSU win over Gonzaga and Duke would probably be enough to put you in the top ranked spot when the next poll comes out. I really don’t care where in the top 10 MSU is ranked on November 28, so long as it’s top ranked in the last poll. In addition, while no easy feat to win in Cameron, beating an undeafeated Duke at home would certainly cement MSU in the top spot.
Just going to watch and enjoy some great basketball. Whatever happens, happens.
Fun week though, no?
How "fun" this week is for me,
depends greatly on the Cats taking care of business tonight. If we do, I can have a lot of fun this week, no matter what happens. If we don’t, my Nervous Nelly side will rear its head again.

I have to ask (and this seemed like the best place without wasting a fanpost)
Does anyone know if Kelly is playing tomorrow? (by tomorrow I mean Monday against Gonzaga)
Have not heard yet.
