Around SBN: NFL Players Ready To Welcome Gay Teammate

Hello, Newman!

For some wacky reason, SBNation does not have our exhibition games in the database of GameThreads, so this will have to suffice.

Tonight might be the only time my mother's two alma maters face off. Other than that, this game is not particularly noteworthy. It serves mainly as the long-awaited* beginning to a much anticipated basketball season.

So, it's here at last. Here's to a successful next five months for your No. 3-ranked Wildcats.

BRING ON THE CATS!!!

*Like, since two minutes after the buzzer sounded at the end of the Butler game.

I've been waiting on it to pre-publish for 30 minutes.

SB is messed up tonight or something. Finally got fed up and published it manually.

by BracketCat on Nov 2, 2010 6:48 PM CDT up reply actions

No Jamar and no Devon Peterson tonight.

Jamar got poked in the eye and will sit this one out.

Devon’s still too new, apparently.

by BracketCat on Nov 2, 2010 6:48 PM CDT reply actions

I'm sure one will show up eventually.

But y’all need to look into getting DirecTV. I haven’t had to sweat a single game since I got it.

By law, she has to allow it.

Pretty sure of that. Might want to consult a lawyer.

what do you think TB?

Of more importance, how about changing in the interior garage door to one that has a cat-door in it, and then changing back when I leave?

There's an FCC rule or regulation on that issue

I’m not an expert in that area, and don’t really want to give legal advice on the site, but just from two minutes of research, it looks like there’s probably something you can do about it.

Thanks TB, but I was kidding more or less

My Mom and some good friends love their AT&T cable so I would probably do that if I wanted TV.

My projected starters

Pullen, Kelly, Judge and McGruder are virtual locks.

Most will say Irving for the fifth spot, but don’t be surprised it’s one of the freshmen: Spradling, Southwell or Williams.

by BracketCat on Nov 2, 2010 6:49 PM CDT reply actions

Uglier than you think.

Frank is notorious for intentionally uglifying these things to make a point. We might see walk-ons out there if he doesn’t see the effort he wants to see.

Oh, hell yeah.

Remember those 4 huge non-con wins we ripped off right after that?

I remember being in the car listening to Coach on the way home when he said

“When they come to practice they’ll either work and do what I want, or I’ll destroy them.” I knew at that point that KSU was going to be either very good or a disaster.

And yes, I remember what happened afterwards.

THERE’S NO WAY WE’LL WIN A GAME THE REST OF THE YEAR.

OK, Just kidding. Loved that finish by Jake before the timeout. Drive, force the contact, finish. Fear the Beard.

We're going to play the whole team before halftime at this rate

Really like Asprilla so far. Goes after boards, gets position, looks smooth (despite the easy miss). Got lost on defense once though.

Judge doesn’t look good thus far. Out of position twice on defense, not much doing on offense. Give him time.

Jake is Jake. I love that kid.

Spradling plays good defense. Williams buried a three in his first collegiate shot.

by TB on Nov 2, 2010 7:30 PM CDT reply actions

Southwell has looked OK

Spradling does everything well. Has 2 rebounds, runs the offense great, makes good passes, buried an open 3, is not a liability on defense. Just as advertised.

He will push Irving for the starting spot. Speaking of Irving — much better looking offensive game, 2 steals, decent passing and great defense. I see improvement there.

by BracketCat on Nov 2, 2010 7:43 PM CDT up reply actions

Someone put out an APB for Nick Russell.

We’ve seen every scholarship newcomer already, but no sign of a returning sophomore guard?

Uh oh… I smell a transfer in the making.

Got comfortable with a 10-point lead.

This would be that ugly part I was talking about.

by BracketCat on Nov 2, 2010 7:46 PM CDT up reply actions

Is it just me, or has the offense seemed to run at its smoothest when Spradling is the PG?

I think he plays the 1 and Jake plays the 2, and when Jake shifts to the 1, Irving comes in at the 2.

by BracketCat on Nov 2, 2010 7:47 PM CDT up reply actions

He just airballed a free throw.

Methinks Frank ran their asses off last night to add some adversity.

…he has the yips from the FT line. Did a poor job recognizing the double-team, too.

On the bright side, he’s got some muscle definition this year.

If he can just get that up to around 68%, he'll double his scoring average.

It’s the only thing holding him back from monster points. Boy will be at the line a LOT this year.

Will Spradling with some serious confidence in his stroke at the charity stripe.

I’m telling you, guys, this guy is Shalee Lehning with a penis. He was born to play point guard.

We haven’t had guys like this since Lon Kruger and Will Scott and those great guards in the 70s and 80s.

So our FT percentage has not improved from last year.

We need to strive for 80% or Duke will beat us by 15-20.

by Catbacker98 on Nov 2, 2010 8:07 PM CDT reply actions

It doesn't help...

…that Jake sat out most of the first half. He was 3-3 when he was in there. Gotta think if he’d stayed in, he would have kept that going and the percentage would be a little better.

Still, I agree it’s a concern.

80 percent is asking a lot.

I’m not sure an HCFM team will ever hit that.

I much prefer the idea of defending the hell out of Duke and keeping them below their scoring average. But that’s just me.

The only thing wrong with Will Spradling...

Prep yourselves now.

Freddy shot about 40 percent at the line as a freshman. This will be ugly.

by BracketCat on Nov 2, 2010 8:25 PM CDT reply actions

Still seeing some whining tendencies out of Curtis.

Really was hoping Frank would have coached that shit out of him by now.

Me too

by Sean T on Nov 2, 2010 8:31 PM CDT up reply actions

Oh, wow.

Freddy loses his shoe, gets it back on, and helps get a steal.

Then Spradling sets up a great look for a Wally Judge layup. Nicely done.

by BracketCat on Nov 2, 2010 8:29 PM CDT reply actions

Watching this team right now, one thing is going thru my mind.

Dom Sutton would not get many minutes on this team. We’ve upgraded our athleticism and offense at every position.

by BracketCat on Nov 2, 2010 8:30 PM CDT reply actions

Except PG I think

But give Spradling a few months

Fire Chris Cosh!

by Sean T on Nov 2, 2010 8:31 PM CDT up reply actions

Southwell is a physical upgrade over Clemente.

He is longer, bigger, taller and supposedly is our best passer. Just not as fast, is all.

by BracketCat on Nov 2, 2010 8:34 PM CDT up reply actions

I haven't seen him so far

How has he been doing?

Fire Chris Cosh!

by Sean T on Nov 2, 2010 8:37 PM CDT up reply actions

Agreed

Losing Sutton isn’t a huge problem.

Obviously FT need to improve. Jake is going to be special as always. Loving what we’re getting out of Freddy and Spradling. Wally has the potential to be a monster by mid-season. Really, the biggest concern right now, which frankly I’m shocked to see (despite recognizing this is the first exhibition game and relatively meaningless) how poorly Curt is playing. He’s not getting in the right position, he’s not finishing strong, and as noted by BracketCat his whining is still there. None of those things are acceptable for a role playing senior, no less the supposed second best player on this team.

That being said, there should be some rust. Frank is trying a lot of lineups and we won’t know what we have until mid-December really. Missing Jamar tonight also changes the team’s offensive dynamics. Having him hopefully next game should show us more of what this team can do.

by yeahboozin on Nov 2, 2010 8:34 PM CDT up reply actions

It's telling

In an exhibition game Curt has been getting so many minutes. Clearly Frank is not happy with the way he’s playing tonight.

by yeahboozin on Nov 2, 2010 8:42 PM CDT reply actions

Myles

Good to see him draw a charge first play in there.

Probably not a good sign for him though it took so long.

by yeahboozin on Nov 2, 2010 8:47 PM CDT up reply actions

A Juevol Myles sighting!

Took a charge in his first time down the court.

by BracketCat on Nov 2, 2010 8:46 PM CDT reply actions

Depends.

If you’re a freshman, no. If an upperclassman, it might. It’s weird, like all things NCAA.

Juevol’s a 3 to play 3, tho, so no redshirt available, I guess.

by BracketCat on Nov 2, 2010 9:06 PM CDT up reply actions

Myles playing the Denis role there.

Kicking to Jake on the fast break for the wide-open 3. Interesting.

Also, yet another Rodney rebound. That kid is gonna be sick at the 3.

by BracketCat on Nov 2, 2010 8:50 PM CDT reply actions

Rod is a great rebounder

But hasn’t played great offensively today. That’ll come.

Gotta love what Freddy is showing us tonight.

by yeahboozin on Nov 2, 2010 8:51 PM CDT up reply actions

Another great pass

This kid can play.

Also, props to Myles. Nothing flashy but three very good fundamental plays in only a few minutes. If he continues like that he’ll start taking Marty’s PT.

by yeahboozin on Nov 2, 2010 8:54 PM CDT up reply actions

And then he sets up Wally for the sick dunk with a sharp hi-lo pass.

Very nice. This guy is already 100x better than Lu on the offensive end.

by BracketCat on Nov 2, 2010 8:54 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm telling ya, they've got no legs.

Frank ran ’em and ran ’em hard.

Besides, Jamar will take 90 percent of Victor’s minutes.

by BracketCat on Nov 2, 2010 9:07 PM CDT up reply actions

It's the marking...

Sure looked like the charge on Pullen

that the guy was camped out on the circle. It’s still a judgment call, unfortunately. Now, you just have more room to argue.

by gw1754 on Nov 2, 2010 10:42 PM CDT up reply actions

The worst part about that call...

…is that Jake barely grazed the guy. There definitely were some goofy calls tonight, but more were on them than were on us, so I’m happy.

by BracketCat on Nov 2, 2010 11:16 PM CDT up reply actions

Wally

Has been awesome in second half.

If he can do a bit better on FT he is a double-double threat every game.

by yeahboozin on Nov 2, 2010 9:01 PM CDT reply actions

I hope so

Work his butt off, but play hard, do just what Coach wants him to do, I hope he can get his minutes. I think Merrie won the NU game when NU shot 99% for the game.

by Sean T on Nov 2, 2010 9:04 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree, but there are a lot more talented guys on this team.

As an added bonus, it could help us get his brother in a Cats uniform down the road.

by yeahboozin on Nov 2, 2010 9:07 PM CDT up reply actions

Love it

The freshman look very solid.

Myles is quickly establishing himself as a hustle guy. Could become an unexpected fan favorite at this rate.

by yeahboozin on Nov 2, 2010 9:10 PM CDT up reply actions

He's a walkon

And with the number of scholarships we may need to open up next year, he’s likely to never get one. They won’t redshirt him.

Southwell is really impressive.

by yeahboozin on Nov 2, 2010 9:14 PM CDT up reply actions

Sweet

Good win by the Cats. No one hurt and lots of time for everyone!

Fire Chris Cosh!

by Sean T on Nov 2, 2010 9:15 PM CDT reply actions

Yup. And Frank will have plenty to teach and motivate from this.

I wonder about the lack of time for Nick. Really strange considering how many people thought he was a candidate to start alongside Jake.

by yeahboozin on Nov 2, 2010 9:16 PM CDT reply actions

Frank on postgame just said

Nick Russell has all the talent to contribute to this team, but he needs to buy in to what the Cats are about.

Sounds like an attitude issue that’ll be fixed this season or we know where one of those necessary scholarships is coming from.

by yeahboozin on Nov 2, 2010 9:36 PM CDT up reply actions

Last year...

…a lot of what limited Russell’s playing time was his inability to pick up the defensive rotations. My guess is that has continued to this year. I hope he gets it figured out, because he has all the tools to be an all-conference-level player. But as we all know, if you can’t play defense for Frank, you won’t play for Frank.

I didn't really pay close attention as it was my wife's birthday...

But what I saw was impressive.

Wally Judge is going to be great, Pullen can take over a game whenever, and I love Spradling and Southwell.

I’m not going to take too much from an exhibition game, but I like the fact that this team is playing a tough non-con because it will keep them on their toes all season. They have an amazing amount of depth and guys with star potential (Pullen, Judge, Kelly, Samuels), and they have role players galore. I don’t know how Asprilla will fit in quite yet, but he’s gonna be pretty good.

I really loved Spradling. Can’t emphasize that enough.

I have a huge man crush on Spralding

Probably has something to do with the fact thats he’s shalee with a penis but I regress. I like the sheer number of guards on this team and maybe it was the fact that we were playing newman but we looked taller and longer than last year(probably has something to do with Asprilla being able to jump, which colon did not have that ability). I think colon slowed us down in the spare minutes he played and with the skill sit of Asprilla. I think we won’t lose as much speed as we think with Clemente gone. Passing looks great, but there was some very sloppy play at times. However this was just a game to figure out how all the pieces will work together.

Remember what Kansas said about being deep last year? This team matches that depth I think.

Seriously

I think the only women’s player I’ve seen at K-State more versatile than Shalee might have been Mahoney. The sad thing was that she was too-often overlooked, being on the same roster as Ohlde, Wecker, and Koehn.

She was a BEAST on the basketball court — lots of fun to watch her play.

I was just looking at the roster.

Don’t look now, but Frank seems to be establishing recruiting ties in NYC. Kelly, Henriquez-Roberts, Southwell, and Peterson are all from the New York City area. Admittedly, Southwell is the only one to come to K-State directly, but it can’t hurt.

Not Frank so much as it is Dalonte.

Fred Hill and Steve Lavin are gonna start giving us trouble up there, however.

How did JHR not come directly to K-State?

Because he spent a year in prep school? I don’t really think that should count against him. He was still a 5-to-play-4 player.
