What's really going on with Mr. Kelly?

I love Frank Martin.  Love.  Yet I'm beginning to get this odd, sinking feeling that there is more to the story of Curtis Kelly.

I know Frank is an old school guy.  I know that it is his way or the highway.  I know he's about the biggest softy out there when it comes to everything BUT basketball.  I know he treats his players like his children (though he doesn't yell as loud at his three year old).  I know he is personally hurt when the players ignore, disrespect, flake out, act like a teenager.

BUT...there is always a but...

What the hell is going on with Kelly?

Leadership?  Really?  The point has been made.  The kid has been embarrassed on national tv twice and regionally last night to a much less extent, mostly because he has seemed less and less vital to the program.

According to everything I've read and heard he's making strides in practice and for all intents and purposes should see the floor Monday.  If he does, this post is moot.  Yet, I just have a bad feeling he might not see the floor.  I would like to think Frank would be honest with the fans and just tell us if Kelly failed  a mid-term or "forgot" to turn in a paper, but I just don't know.

Have you had a gut reaction to this benching?  What do you think?  Am I just freaking out because we almost lost to a school that is about the size of my high school graduation class?

Did HCFM Get Outcoached?

The bad grades idea

would still tie in with the leadership issue. It could be his leadership problems are less of a on-court thing and more of a school-related thing. That would explain the seemingly contradictory reports of him improving in practice but remaining on the bench.

I don’t think it would necessarily be lying if it was academic related, because as I said, it does tie into the leadership meme. Whatever the reason, I have been sharing the sinking feeling that you have that this could all backfire in a very serious way, ala Marcus Dupree or something. But for now I trust Frank and have faith it will all work out.

I think there must be more to this story

not to start any wild internet rumors, but there are so many weird things goin on in college sports right now. I think, but hope I’m wrong, that there is something lurking in the background. I thought C Kelly showed excellent maturity last year. Hard to believe the progress would just vanish. With D Sutton transferring, I just have a sinking feeling that Coach Martin’s tenacious style may not “wear well” over the long haul. There is a fine line between discipline and destruction. I’m not saying Martin has crossed it. It is early. I have great admiration and hope for HCFM.

At this point,

Frank needs to either put him on the damn court, or cut him. I get that he’s trying to prove a point, but it’s enough already. Either Curt’s going to help us, or he’s not. One way or the other, we need to find out now.

I agree

with the play him or cut him!! And I hate that Frank is giving us no info and no time table. I would like to think that its a ego battle between Frank and CK… I dont think CK is going anywhere because the last 3 games hes been in KSTATE gear still…..

by JB-KState on Nov 19, 2010 5:30 PM CST up reply actions

Curt is more patient than I would have been.

I was a pretty coachable kid, I think, but I don’t know how I would’ve handled being publicly humiliated three straight games by my coach. I understand what Frank is trying to get from him, but if the first and second times didn’t get it, what’s the point of the third time? I just don’t get it.

Well if Curtis has any desire to play on the next level,

quitting/being cut/etc. would be the worst thing he could do. With all this talk about leadership and playing team roles, I’m sure CK did or said something about getting his stats night in and night out.

I get it

It’s 3 games in the non con, who cares what teaching it’s supposed to mean? If he sits out the Duke game I might start worrying.

Why?

Why do YOU need to know? None of your business and none of mine. When you get your degree, get a job, apply for a coaching job, work your way up the ranks, get a head job or asst. job at KSU then you will know. Until then, sit, watch game, enjoy, and quit complaining about things that don’t concern you.

Oh. Snap.

You’re new here so let me tell how this will go.

This is a fan blog.

We have every right to ask questions as to the whys and hows of what goes on at KSU. If you don’t like it, that’s fine. But please refrain from giving orders about life decisions to people you don’t know.

Last year, I finally got around to reading

A Season on the Brink.

Bobby Knight used to do this shit all the time. Sometimes, it backfired, and the kid left, but nobody ever left Indiana because Bobby Knight was mean to them and then succeeded elsewhere. Most of the time, though, Knight ended up with a solid player who busted his ass for him.

I guess my only “concern”, as it were, is that Frank might not be enough of an asshole to pull this sort of thing off successfully.

I wouldn't call Larry Bird "nobody."

But other than that, you’re mostly right. I don’t know if I like having Frank compared to Knight, though.

Bird didn't leave because he couldn't handle Knight.

He left because Knight didn’t think he could play.

That's a bit simplistic, I think.

Bird couldn’t stand Knight and his tactics.

From Wiki...
Bird received a basketball scholarship to Indiana University in 1974. However, he was overwhelmed by the size of the campus and number of students and was not mentally ready for this stage of life; according to Bird, “it didn’t take long to realize that I was out of my cocoon.”4 Bird was also treated poorly by an established IU star, Kent Benson; as Bird recalled, the other upperclassmen of the team treated him well.6 He dropped out of Indiana after 24 days, disappointing his mother.

by WillieWannabe on Nov 21, 2010 11:01 PM CST up reply actions

From Seth Davis's Book, "When March Went Mad"
Knight walked toward Bird; Bird said hello — and Knight blew by without saying a word. "Larry didn’t say anything, but I could tell with his demeanor that his feelings were hurt," Condra says. "Larry was used to people being a lot nicer to him. He didn’t like Coach Knight’s personality."

Knight would later regret treating Bird so coldly. "Larry Bird is one of my great mistakes," he said. "I was negligent in realizing what Bird needed at that time in his life."

Very true.

But I never said their weren’t. Just that “Knight didn’t think he could play” was a bit simplistic (it actually seems that Knight knew bird COULD play, but just didn’t know how to deal with him on a personal level), and that Bird couldn’t stand Knight.

Wuss!

You’ve got to be the biggest sissy on this board! You go to 99% of ALL college practices and you’d be amazed at what is said. This isn’t HS anymore, it’s a job, PERIOD! If you can’t take it they go home and suck on mommies nipple. My feelings are hurt, the coached yelled and cussed at me. You think the cats play as hard as they do because Frank gives them hugs when they screw up? No, he sticks a shoe up the butt and tells them in not a very nice way this is the way it’s going to get done. What YOU really can’t stand is doing what is necessary to win! Bedwetter!

by Horntail on Nov 22, 2010 2:40 PM CST up reply actions

What are you trying to prove?

And if you think Frank is just some hardass, you don’t know much about KSU basketball at all. The way he deals with players is night-and-day from how Knight did. I coached for 10 years, and played sports for 10 before that. I’d recommend you take your bully-boy routine elsewhere, if you;’re not interested in actually discussing things without spewing your nonsense.

Yes, you did.

And, for the record, my head of thick hair is all my own. No need for a weave here! I did have to remove my $5000 Rolex and hand it to Panjandrum before delivering the beat down, though. Which reminds me, where did Pan run off to with my damn watch?!?

You helped my point.

For the record I like Frank and Bobby, there both old school, take no BS, and aren’t afraid to tell a kid about what he thinks of their play. I could care less whether people like their tactics or not. Both are winners and get it done both off and on the court. You better have skin like an alligator to play for either one of these guys. I’ve been around the program, I’ve been around Frank away from Basketball, he’s a great guy. I’ve been around Knight as well, same story as Frank. So the question begs to be asked since we are a Fan Blog, why don’t you like Knight? These guys are more similar than you think. What I find funny is when someone crawls up in you like both Frank and Bobby do you got your tail feathers all bunched up. This is like the majority of parents today, they all want discipline until it comes to their kid. Not sure you could play for either. You like Frank but dislike Knight? I would get the argument that I don’t like either but I don’t get yours.

by Horntail on Nov 23, 2010 8:35 AM CST up reply actions

Frank and Knight are completely different animals as coaches.

It starts with even the fact that Frank’s players call him “Frank.” Go to yesterday’s K-State Slate, and read up on why Frank’s players love him so much. There’s a big difference between how Knight treated players (and people in general) and how Frank does.

As for who I could or could not play for, you really ARE a presumptuous little lad. You bluster and blab about “discipline” and who could or could not play for what coach. How about hanging out here for awhile, and seeing what the people here are all about before jumping into the middle of someone with your insults about who they are and what they are about?

To sum up my 30 second research foray into "Horntail"

he was a member for a week or more before he posted. Not sure if he spent any of that time reading BOTC content or not – perhaps just a less than stellar brain-to-fingers (the mouth on the interwebz) filter? Just sayin’

Why can’t we all just get along!! :-)
