K-State Slate: 11.12.10
The K-State women open their season today at noon, against Grambling State in the Commerce Bank Classic at Bramlage. They will play again Saturday at either noon or 2:00 PM against either St. John's or Marist. This is a great opportunity to get out and cheer on Deb Patterson's basketball team, if you are in or around Manhattan.
The K-State men will open their season tonight at 8:00. In their preview of the opening game against James Madison, the C-J notes that the Cats have stated that "Houston" is the goal for the season. Houston is the location of the 2011 Final Four. I like the optimism, for sure.
Earlier this week, the C-J also pointed out that it's not like K-State's quarterbacks have had their throwing arms amputated. Maybe the Cats start Klein and come out throwing, creating another set of surprises for the opponent to have to deal with. It's no secret that Coach Snyder is known for running a more clandestine operation than the CIA. In fact, Klein says that a bit of omerta-like silence is practiced around the Cats' football team: "What happens here stayse here, in the sense that we protect our family and protect each other, no matter how small or big the information happens to be." Am I the only one who thinks that's pretty freaking cool?
Austin Meek has some more on the Cam Newton saga that KSU was -- thank heavens! -- able to avoid. I don't know how others feel about this, but I'd far rather be where K-State is right now (6-3, 3-3) than in the national championship hunt with the NCAA Sword of Damocles hanging over our head, and Cecil Newton's big mouth dooming us to probation or worse. Not that I think Coach Snyder would ever pay for players, I'm just saying...
Lastly, the Manhattan Mercury taps the brakes a bit on the exuberance surrounding the men's basketball team right now, noting that the Cats lost "four grown men" (Frank's words) off last year's squad, and have yet to replace them. Here's hoping this early season murderer's row on our schedule brings about some growing up amongst our young guys. Jake definitely needs a voice in that locker room helping him lead. (Note: SeanT mentioned this issue in a fan post, but didn't have a link to a story on it. Still wanted to give him a shout for bringing it to my attention.)
Feel free to go crazy with links of your own in the comments.

Another plug for TCU to be invited into the Big-12
this time from Kevin Haskin in yesterdays TCJ. Looks like some of the comments after the article are the regular mixture of wisdom and buffoonery.
We’ll never hear the end of it from the media as to how the Big-12 has zero chance to survive going forward as 10 members.
Personally, I think we should just go back to the old "Big 8" name.
Heck, the Big 10 has survived for how long with 11 members? We could be the 10-member Big 8. Of course, it would seem screwy, given that Texas and their 3 little buddies insisted that the “Big 12” be considered as a whole new league, instead of the expansion of the Big 8 that it ACTUALLY was.

Good idea,
but without Nebraska and Colorado it kinds of negates the Big-8 name now (particularly Nebraska, which I believe was an original member of the old Big-6).
I always like hearing ideas kicked around for the conference going forward regarding expansion, rebranding, deeper academic cooperation,TV contracts, etc, but will never understand why the media can’t let go of their belief that the Big-12 is doomed (imminently or eventually) and nothing will change that – short of getting Notre Dame, Arkansas and/or LSU to come into the conference.
Damn,
meant to post that as a reply to you, K.Scott.
No worries. I "reply fail" a bit myself.
As for the media’s glee at the pending demise of the Big 12, I was a bit shocked this summer at the level of giddiness that some displayed when the conference seemed doomed. I think the current nonsense is just left over from that.

I totally agree,
but for some its a prediction they made which resulted in egg on their face and they can’t let it go. Their minds are completely sealed off about any other possibility than the Big-12 disintegrating and “super-conference” nonsense. They seem shocked that Texas would have opted to remain in a smaller Big-12, no matter how beneficial that move was for UT financially (and competitively).
Notre Dame and Ark/BYU by 2015...heard it here first.
They will come in and participate in all sports, but keep independent TV contracts based on the Texas Model.
I’m not exactly guaranteeing anything, but it makes a lot of sense if you’re half crazy…and know that Mr. Jones is willing to throw a crap load of money at it as a “signing bonus”. The other caveat is ND being pedestrian still. If they go on a tear and end up in the BCS a couple of times, game off.
Let Notre Dame keep their tv rights for non con games
and I bet we could get a deal done.
oh hail the Purple and White
I've thought about ND & BYU
Maybe they can start a rivalry with Baylor.
Hail to the Purple, Hail to the White
Wildcat in spirit, Wildcat in fight
Hail Alma Mater from sea to sea
Onward forever, Hail Victory!

Frank Murphy??? Just joking with ya! Way to send the Horns back to Tejas without cojones!
I thought that was some random booster?
I remember the stink it caused, but I’m pretty sure nothing actually came of it.
