I'll assume Martin gave KU one of the two first place votes

but who does everything think the second one was?

Hoiberg!!

Actually i have no clue. I figured this would have been closer, to be honest.

Yeah I find that surprising as well.

But I think the most thing that I’m surprised with is Texas at #3 – really?

Well, idiots are allowed to vote too, even among coaches

I guess they figure talent can beat coaching some day. But Baylor and MU are #3 and #4 to me.

Nice publicity for KSU, but I’m going to pick KU to win the conference until someone can finally knock them off.

I don't necessarily like that mentality

They lost a lot of their talent from last year’s squad to receive that benifit of the doubt this time. I’m not saying that I agree with the 10 votes, but I sure as hell agree with it not being the other way around.

They also lost a lot of talent after winning the national title in 2008

All they did then was win the Big XII again. As much as it pains me to say it, KU bball is one of the top athletic programs (pro or college) in the country.

Mr. Bailey I know you are new and all...

so I wonder if you knew that ChrisP already beat you to it with a fanshot and should have been promoted to the first page.

by Catbacker98 on Oct 5, 2010 10:51 AM CDT reply actions

I tried to promote it, but couldn't figure out how

Also, ChrisP didn’t have that as part of his Slate for today, I don’t think. It was posted by WillieWannabe in the comments section. If anyone knows how to promote ChrisP’s to the front page (a power I was either not given, or that I haven’t figured out yet), I have no problem with this being removed.

Yes you are right WillieWannabe was the author.

So apparently TB, Pan and Bracket only gave you the valet key?

Communicated with WW

and he seems okay with my faux pas. I actually thought he was basically asking someone in that thread to post it as a fanshot, so I did.

As for what “keys” I have, I’m still figuring it out. I think the main (perhaps only) one is to be able to put things right on the front page, and to be able to see the “guts” of how the blog works on a technical level. Other than that, I don’t think I can promote things and whatnot.

Learning where everything is...

…in the blogging platform takes some time. We have an awesome setup here at SB Nation, but there are so many tools that it takes a while to figure out where all of them are.

We never intentionally put up a post about something that has already been posted by a reader, unless it’s a really big issue and we want to write a full post about it. A lot of times, we rush to get something posted and only discover later that somebody beat us to it. I promise, we don’t do it intentionally. KSB, I think you have the authority to add posts to the front page, I’ll email you with instructions.

Hmm...

I’m not sure. BC and I tried to figure it out, but I don’t have the same sub-buttons underneath my admin button that he has. Mine only shows “Delete” (which I just used on someone’s comment that was trying to sell purses, of all things) and “Hide.” But, if I’m somehow missing something that’s there, and I’m just not finding it, I’ll check my email, and see what it is. Thanks!

So if we received 119 points..

with 10 first place votes (11 points a piece)…so that means one coach had us third….

Do they make these votes public?

not sure if you guys saw but LaceDarius Dunn was reportedly arrested for felony domestic assault following an incident with his GF. Should be interesting to see how Drew handles that.

sounds like the girlfriend is saying it was an accident and doesn’t want to press charges.

Something about jumping out to scare him and him punching her in the face. If that’s true I suppose you’d had to see a guy lose a career over something silly like that. But if that’s the case I wouldn’t understand how the police got involved. Then again I’m not in law enforcement.

well obviously...

he has been with this girl for a long time, they have a child together and a felony domestic assault significantly reduces the opportunity for him to collect a fat paycheck from the NBA…so right or wrong, this definitely is going to look fishy.

If that story was at all true – why would you even bother filing a charge like that?

well...

apparently she had a broken jaw so I’m guessing that regardless of her feeling on the matter, when you go to the ER with a broken jaw and say, “he punched me in the face” they probably bring in the police even if you say it was an accident.

Well that's true - sounds like there was an argument between her and the police

so you never know – then again, the cops could have been UT fans pissed at Baylor for stealing some of the basketball spotlight. Ever since the calender turned to 2010, they’ve been having a real “bad” year athletically. Just sayin’…

It’s a theory, and it’s probably wrong, but it’s a theory…

This is a nice nod...

…to the job that Frank Martin has done in Manhattan, but that’s all it is. I’m very surprised that many of the coaches think someone other than KU is the preseason favorite, not because they’ve won the league several years in a row, but rather because they still have a lot of good players and won the league relatively easily last year. If I had a vote, it would have been KU first, K-State second, Baylor third, Missouri fourth, and Texas fifth.

Did you notice

that L. Dunn from Baylor is indefinitely suspended after being charged in a domestic violence incident? Personally, on a wholly basketball-related basis, I think that they’ll be just as good without Dunn, which seems counterintuitive, but when you look at his numbers, it’s not. He doesn’t make the players around him better, like Jake does, and Denis did. His A/TO ratio is AWFUL, and he’s just, well, a really selfish player — at least by the numbers.

by K. Scott Bailey on Oct 5, 2010 10:22 PM CDT up reply actions

I disagree...

…because while he may not make the players around him better, none of them can step up and fill the void created by his absence. Ideally, you want a player who can score 20 and still distribute the ball without turning it over much, because then not only do you have one good player, but the good player makes the other guys on the court better. In Dunn’s case, maybe he doesn’t make the other players better, but he’s worth the 20 points pretty much every night. I don’t think the other four players on the court at any given time are an average of five points per game better without Dunn in the lineup. Not to mention that Dunn requires extra attention from the defense when he’s on the court, so if he’s gone that attention goes away and the other players find less room to roam.

Valid point...

however I would clarify that some player will take his spot and Baylor would play 5-on-5 basketball, so the “other four” would have to replace [(Dunn’s 20) – (Dunn-replacement scoring)]/4…

Doesn’t change your point, but if the next guy stepping in at the #2 spot can do 12 to 15 pts/gm, then ~2 per game increase is possible if the new #2 has a respectable A:TO ratio.

If Baylor has a guy on the bench than can consistently score 12-15 points per game,

they’ve got the best 6 man in the nation.

by Warden11 on Oct 6, 2010 5:13 PM CDT up reply actions

I think you'd be surprised

how many d-1 players who are currently on a bench somewhere could score 10-12 ppg. What will be important, is finding someone who can do that, who can also have a halfway decent A/TO.

by K. Scott Bailey on Oct 6, 2010 5:22 PM CDT up reply actions

Maybe. Baylor had 3 guys last year that averaged at least 10 points a game.

Two are gone and the other is Dunn. Yet the counterargument is assuming that Dunn’s replacement (6th man) is going to score 10-12 points a game? Again, if their 6th man steps in and averages 10-12 a game, he’s the best in the nation.

Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.

Also think you're getting stuck on A/TO rate,

in 2009-10 Dunn had a 116 offensive rating with over 26% of his possessions used. That’s pretty damn good.

Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.

by Warden11 on Oct 6, 2010 7:03 PM CDT up reply actions

Offensive Rating?

Do you have a link for that? It’s not a stat I’ve ever used or, for that matter, even heard of.

by K. Scott Bailey on Oct 6, 2010 7:10 PM CDT up reply actions

Here ya go:
For players, the formula is: Offensive Rating = (Points Produced / Individual Possessions) x 100
Points can be produced through field goals, free throws, assists, and offensive rebounds. Individual possessions are the sum of a player’s scoring possessions (field goals, free throws, plus partial credit for assists), missed field goals and free throws that the defense rebounds, and turnovers.

It’s a tempo adjusted stat that was developed by Dean Oliver. It can be deceiving with players who don’t have a high % of possessions used (formula for possessions is fairly dirty). For example, Tyrel Reed’s O rating for last year was 136.2 but his possession% was only 12. His rating is so high because when he ended a possession, it was often on a 3 pointer. For a guy like Dunn who has the ball in his hands a lot, that’s a great rating.

www.kenpom.com has a lot of great numbers. Statsheet.com also is loaded with any stat you want.

Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.

Thanks!

I’ll take a look at those sites!

by K. Scott Bailey on Oct 6, 2010 10:36 PM CDT up reply actions

I was about to post the same thing as VegasCat did.

Let’s assume, for the sake of argument, that the next guy they plug in at guard is a solid 10-12 ppg guy, with a decent A/TO of, say, 1.5 or so. Your second scorer would then need to add 3 or so points to his game, your third scorer 2 or so, and your 4th and 5th scores 1 or 2 each. I think that the gain you get from basically doubling the A/TO that you got with Dunn, as well as the shots that would then be spread out over the other players would make Baylor a better overall team.

If you can’t tell, I’m a very sabermetric-oriented thinker, so players like Dunn drive me a bit nuts! :)

by K. Scott Bailey on Oct 6, 2010 11:00 AM CDT up reply actions

Forget the A/TO or the PPG stats

Dunn is a player that can flat-out shoot. He has the capability of draining 10 3’s on any given night. The guy can shoot lights out. You can replace points, but you can’t replace a shooter like that.

Surgeon General's Warning: K-State-Mizzou basketball may increase the risk of high blood pressure. Please consult your doctor prior to watching any of these games.

by mystman995 on Oct 6, 2010 11:25 AM CDT up reply actions

I think that's a common misconception

Dunn is certainly a good shooter, with FG and 3pt percentages around 45% and 40% respectively. But to discount his horrendous A/TO is a mistake, as A/TO is a very real measurement of how much better or worse you make your team. If, for example, you give away two of your teams possessions for every 1 time you make an assist on a teammates score (which is about what Dunn averages), you’re doing your team no favors. I’m currently trying to come up with a way to combine all the positive stats available with all of the negative stats available to produce something like a passer rating for basketball players. Once I do, I have a feeling that Dunn will come out as an above-average player, but hardly an irreplaceable one. Sort of like a QB who is in the low-to-mid-80s in his passer rating.

by K. Scott Bailey on Oct 6, 2010 11:38 AM CDT up reply actions

I think it means one of two things:

1.) The word on the street in Big 12 Coachland is that Josh Selby will not be declared an amateur, thus leaving KU without a good point guard or a dominating center.

2.) All but one opposing coach thinks K-State has a more talented roster than KU, with or without Josh Selby.

Either way, it’s good for us. I’m not worried about handling the expectations internally — we proved several times over that we could do that last season.

I’m more worried about the Jayhawks actually having a chip on their shoulder. Bill Self is a mastermind and he will find some way to squeeze the utmost out of his team because of this. I much would have preferred them lazy and complacent.

by BracketCat on Oct 6, 2010 12:12 AM CDT up reply actions

Have to Agree

Although I think KSU definitely can win the Big 12 this year, if Selby is eligiible you probably have to vote KU #1 to start it out.
