Illinois up early on Buckeyes

Illini takes opening drive for TD. it’s on the Big10 Network. Lot’s of decent “measuring stick” games early today.

Chaos

I always root for chaos in college football, as I love it when the BCS gets tangled up in controversy. Illinois beating OSU would certainly help in that regard.

The dreaded "BCS" call rears it's ugly head early

tOSU marches easily downfield for TD. Illioins blocks PAT; — but wait — a late flag —
Illinois called for defensive holding on a PAT – I kid you not.

KU is TERRIBLE

The Squawks have more penalty yardage than offensive yardage, and already have 2 false starts despite playing in an atmosphere rather akin to a funeral.

Man, that is bogus.

Baylor guy makes a great effort to score a TD, the refs don’t give it to him, then they take away the ensuing QB sneak TD for a review.

So Baylor got screwed twice. These refs need to stay the fuck out of the way of the game, IMO.

On the third try, Baylor finally gets it. It’s finally 17-0 (again). And I think the Bears just scored on a 98-yard drive there, didn’t they? LOLZ

Look at the last five recruiting classes...

…KU has ranked 9th, 5th, 9th, 9th and 7th in the Big 12. Admittedly, that’s not very good, but K-State has ranked 11th, 12th, 7th, 7th and 8th in the same time period. For context, Baylor has been 7th, 10th, 11th, 12th and 12th. The bottom line is not that KU is an especially talented team, but they should be sufficiently talented not to get blown out by Baylor. Hence, my hypothesis that the coaching staff is a bigger part of their problem than talent.

This has been my point

To my friends and KU frenemies…they have more talent yet they don’t have any close to a decent coaching staff. Honestly it just proves the point that Bill Snyder can do more with less than just about anybody.

Of course, that assumes that Rivals' rankings have nay face validity.

I think that’s very much an open question, at least on the football side.

I’d say KU and K-State have fairly comparable talent, with one major exception — Daniel Thomas.

Couple him with our significant coaching advantage and I like our chances in two weeks.

by BracketCat on Oct 3, 2010 11:09 PM CDT up reply actions

I think they have a pretty fair amount of validity...

…and while I have plenty of reasons to criticize Dr. Saturday, Matt Hinton does a pretty good job of laying out why they carry at least some validity. Or, in this case, at least enough validity to show that Baylor should not be beating KU by the score of 55-7.

Now, do I agree that K-State and KU are fairly comparable, talent-wise? Yes, I do. I don’t think either team is significantly more athletic than the other. But I also wouldn’t have thought that Baylor was significantly more talented or athletic than is KU, and yet we saw the embarrassment that happened on Saturday.

We'll carry the banner high!
Bring On The Cats

by TB on Oct 4, 2010 12:03 AM CDT up reply actions

They might not be more athletic.

But my eyes told me Baylor had more speed at the skill positions, and it wasn’t even close.

Find me a KU kid as fast as Griffin, Gordon or Wright, and I’ll show you a creature as mythological as the Jayhawk.

by BracketCat on Oct 4, 2010 12:42 PM CDT up reply actions

Also, their strength program appears to be suffering greatly in the post-Dawson era.

Witness the comments from the kid who was amazed by the size of Baylor’s O-line and “what they were feeding them.”

“They were a lot bigger than Georgia Tech,” he said. Think that might have had something to do with the disparate outcomes?

Baylor’s line averages about the same as K-State’s, so the Sunflower Showdown should be pretty fun for Daniel Thomas fans, IMO.

is that the KU secondary is totally terrible. If they put 8 in the box to stop DT, even Carson Coffman will be able to light them up for 300+ yards. Brodrick Smith could have a career day in Lawrence.

TCU

is going to drop this week. Only up 6-0 on a TERRIBLE Colo St team at half, and it’s still only 13-0 halfway through the 3rd. BCS favorites like Ohio State can afford to suck it up against a terrible team (24-13 against Illinois), but TCU can’t afford to play like this. Dalton has just been flat terrible.

KU has worse luck in Waco than the ATF
The Jayhawks have never won in Waco, going 0-5 including losing all four since the inception of the Big 12 in 1996. No other league team has lost more than twice there in that span. The Jayhawks’ losses there in 1998 and 2002 were the bookends to Baylor’s 29-game conference losing streak.

I don't think so.

This is why I give zero credence to Rivals and other recruiting services. Texas, year in and year out, are ranked at or near the top of the rankings. And, unless there’s a guy named Vince Young or Colt McCoy under center, they are shockingly average.

How in God’s name is a team that loaded with “talent” so incapable of running the damn football?

I've been watching the mistakes some of the other Big 12 QBs are making

And I’m starting to think that CC is middle of the pack. He’s certainly not one of the most athletic, but he largely tends to be one of the better decision-makers.

By that criteria, I’d rather have him than Jerrod “Interception” Johnson or Austen “Schizo” Arnaud. And I’m not sure that I’d take Jones or Gilbert, either.

Carson is definitely better than Hansen, Webb, Potts, and maybe Weeden. At this point, only Martinez, Gabbert and Griffin are definitively better, and even Martinez is an open book from the experience standpoint.

by BracketCat on Oct 2, 2010 6:48 PM CDT up reply actions

Coffman is o.k for what the old guy is trying to do

Remember, he’s never had a running back like Thomas. (not trying to start the Sproles debate, but Sproles could not have done what he did wi/out dual threat Roberson).
Game planning a defense for this K-State offense is a nightmare! The passing game is going to pick up a notch or two. When it does, D Train is going to … oh well … you get the picture.
Now, again, our defense has to step up, and I’m not sure the athletes are there.

*
Not bad, although I did not foresee the craziness in Ames, Ia (and Big Bob Stoops’ stupid fake field goal screwed my spread prediction in the RRR.). What did we learn today? Iowa State is pretty good (KSU has already beaten the Cyclones). The South teams can neither run nor stop the run. And imagine that – I called the Buff win. How does he know these things? Now my words of wisdom to Huskerdom: For weeks I have been urging you to FOCUS on the REDOUT on 10/16. However, the Longhorns have probably convinced even the most spite filled and angry Husker fan (REMEMBER THAT ONE SECOND, and your sickening record of FUTILITY against UT) that your concern all along should have been that little gig you all got coming up this Thursday night. As a K-State fan I wish I could tell you that I am sure the Wildcats will win. I can’t do that … it would be too … easy. I will say that we have played four games that have well prepared us to face a team like the Huskers, and that the old guy, coach Snyder, has been scheming for this game since he came back as head coach last year. It will be a close game. KSU-40% chance to win. The winner of the game plays OU in the CCG.

What We Learned Yesterday (the crazy 10/2/2010)

That a college football Saturday can be magical – because of its roots, and traditions, and its ability to connect today to a Thanksgiving day game in 1971, when Johnny Rogers, with his swivel-hipped moves on a punt return captivated a nation, and a little 17 year old K-State fan fell in love with college football – and all those memories and traditions going down the road because of conference realignment. Money. A true fan takes a little joy in seeing the Buffaloes beat a SEC team; a proud Cyclone team puts on a gutsy show against a proud Tex.Tech; and the Bears let out a mighty roar. We see the always strong Sooners deliver a little humble pie to the Longhorns. We savor this, with a dash of sadness, because of realignment. Money. A sense that change is coming, because of money. And power. And who will wield the power. TO HUSKER NATION: I know I’ve been hard on Perlman and Osborne, but get on the HuskerNation blogs and tell them to right this thing. Nothing good, in the long run, will come from this re-alignment stuff. You belong right here. In the MIDWEST. This is home and we don’t want you (or the Buffaloes) to leave!

I'm conflicted

The piece was a bit about the past and the present. I agree there is too much water under the bridge – and that BigRed is moving on down the road. But in the long run, I don’t think anything good will come with this reallignment stuff. But the money boys are involved, and change is coming, the only constant in life. I’m sick of BigRed too, but in a way I’ll miss their arrogance.

Initially

I would have probably agreed with F76. However, after some time to let the “how-the-hell-can-this-be-happening” flames die down, I agree with BC. I’m sick to death of Nebraska’s “we didn’t get what we deserved in the Big 12” meme. Did UT push people around at the bargaining table? Sure. Would Nebraska have done the same thing, if they had anything resembling the media markets and financial clout of UT? Damn right, they would’ve. What they did when the going got a little tough (leave) shows as much. No, I don’t cry for Nebraska. And the Buffs (notwithstanding this year’s quick start) are an embarrassment on many different levels. Good riddance.
