Walking back to his car with several members of his family following the Huskers' frustrating 20-13 loss to Texas on Saturday, a handful of Nebraska fans saw him from a distance and decided to voice their frustration with Paul's performance.
"You suck!"
"You lost us the game!"
"Texas can have you!"
Huskers Illustrated has a free article up on the personal attacks fans made at Niles Paul after the game. I'm bringing this up because TB and I took some hits earlier this year when we tried to point out their hypocrisy, but hey, what are you gonna do. This is a must read; the kid had to delete his Facebook page due to the number of personal attacks.

That truly sucks.
I was frustrated with Carson’s play after Nebraska, but would never dream of taking such frustrations out on the guy in the real world. I really hope that none of our fans were as classless to Carson after that game as these members of the world’s greatest fans were to Niles Paul.

This is what happens when you wrap your identity and self-worth in a football team. Truly sad.

and everyone makes mistakes … my pencils have erasers.
But there was the comment/story about someone saying bad things about CC in the stands and his brother wanting to address the issue. No one has a pass on this, every fan group has troll-cousins … and I’m sure I have my moments during the games when I’m grumbling about a specific player (how do we delete comments on open-game threads ;-) ).

Very true, but
to some extent, I live and die with how my Cats are doing. Yet, I’d never dream of acting that way towards an individual player. So, I think there HAS to be more to it than just being so wrapped up in the team.

I do remember one
time when there was probably some anger against a specific player…I believe it was 2005 against Colorado at home. Jermaine Moreria muffed a punt that he should have let bounce out of bounds and Colorado recovered at the 35 yard line with 15 seconds left. K-State had a one point lead and the Colorado kicker was Mason Crosby, so he nailed it and beat us. I remember being pretty upset at that…not “I’m going to yell at you and threaten you and say you don’t deserve to be on the team” upset, but I definitely hoped he’d be running stadium stairs all week.
You remember correctly
After he muffed the punt, he was taken off the field in an ambulance. Many people believed he faked the injury because he was embarrassed by his mistake.
I also remember Jeff Schwinn getting called a lot of things in 2003 after the Marshall loss in the Forum.
We definitely do it, but at least we don’t claim to be the classiest fans in the country. Their sin isn’t attacking the player (though that is wrong) it is their hypocrisy.

Listen the most embarrassing thing that I have seen from K-State special teams...
was the year we played OU in Norman and the punter failed to take the field for the kick. We then proceeded to long snap the ball directly out of the back of the endzone for a safety. I have never been able to shake that mistake from my psyche.
by Catbacker98 on Oct 20, 2010 11:53 AM CDT up reply actions
Yeah, that was embarrassing
The next game, when the punting unit took the field, the punter had to count the guys before they broke the huddle.
That was Tim Reyer, an otherwise solid punter.

The one incident that I thought perfectly encapsulated how far and how fast KSU fell after the 2003 title game
It makes me ill thinking about it.
I don't measure a man's success by how high he climbs but how high he bounces when he hits bottom. - Gen. George S. Patton
Not just that
It’s what happens when you put so much emphasis on a single game/opponent, rather than how your team performs over the course of a season.
The Huskers didn’t just want to win. They wanted to punish Texas, to humiliate them, to drive them into the ground and spit on their face as they exited the conference.
In that context, it’s easy to understand how, when you introduce alcohol, an already myopic fan base with an insatiable collective ego would snap.
We need to get this to every SB Nation site in the Big 10
and do you think this will help recruiting. I would love to see legitimate (truthful – evidence Big Red provides) sent to all the Big10 sites so those folks can start developing a strategy to make sure HuskeNation DOES NOT WANT TO TRAVEL like they think they are entitled to. HuskerNation is warped.
Did any of you see the comments that Christian Peter and Grant Wistrom (boy good kids coached by that saint, Dr.Tom) made to the press last week, calling KSU players “garbage.” I have never, ever, seen a Bill Snyder coached player make comments that disgusting.
oh hail the Purple and White
Well, I can think of ONE of our players who was like that.
I have never, ever, seen a Bill Snyder coached player make comments that disgusting.
Chad May was one of the most arrogant people I’ve ever had the misfortune of meeting. )He was the absolute polar opposite of Michael Bishop, in almost every way.) I seem to remember May talking BIG trash about Nebraska’s players and/or coaches during his time at KSU. I’m not blaming that on Coach Snyder at all. In fact, from what I hear, in fact, Coach was so fed up with May, his attitude, and his various shenanigans, that he kind of just washed his hands of him after the 94 season. But, all I’m saying is that every team has their bad apples, player-wise.

Not sure.
But a friend of mine that worked in the NFL, with one of the teams where May had a cup of coffee, told me that May hates Coach Snyder, so I’m assuming that’s why.

May owes Snyder that cup of coffee...
He was a very talented quarterback; no one will argue that.
But that was ALL Bill Snyder. If Snyder had Marc Dunn in 93/94 instead of May, he probably would have put up even better numbers.

Oh, I agree
Coach Snyder MADE Chad May what he was. It’s just that May thinks it’s vice-versa.

I remember a few comments from KSU
But that is neither here nor there. Sometimes they were right.
Will it hurt recruiting? Well, it won’t help. But long-term I don’t think this will make a bit of difference. Every high profile program with a rabid fan base has some morons that react this way. It’s part of the deal, unfortunately, and it is a reality that athletes who want to play big-time college athletics have to accept early on.

Nebraska fans are just like every other group of fans. Some good, some bad, none handle losing very well.

I'm a Husker fan . . .
. . . and our passion is a double-edged sword. Some folks carry it much too far. During NU’s 2007 collapse there were death threats against the then-athletic director and the defensive coordinator. The DC’s son was booed while playing a H.S. football game. That should never happen. Ever. I’m disgusted that it did and it is my lowest point as a Husker fan.
But I feel there is a bit of a difference with the Niles Paul situation. Were the fans classless? Absolutely. Should they have done what they did? Not at all. But it is interesting that they targeted Paul and not Burkhead or Kinnie, who also dropped sure TDs.
Part of that is due to his repeated comments that don’t match his production. Frustration has been building with Niles for some time now; he’s inconsistent at best and an unproductive prima dona at worst. Some comments he made in the paper a couple of weeks ago suggesting NU wasn’t doing enough to get him the ball rubbed fans the wrong way because he has a history of dropping the passes that do go his way.
Again, not excusing the fans who did this. In any group of 85,000 there will always be some a**holes who carry things to the wrong extreme. But Niles does have to shoulder a bit of responsibility for this as well.

Not surprising, but still saddening
I wonder how those fans feel now? Do you think they’re proud of themselves for what they did? Or do you think they regret being such jerks?
I don't measure a man's success by how high he climbs but how high he bounces when he hits bottom. - Gen. George S. Patton
They really invested way too much in this game
I’m wondering how they’re going to handle the next few weeks. Their easy path to the Big XII Championship suddenly doesn’t look so easy.
Most fans will be fine.
Some unhappy loudmouths will do everything they can to be heard.
Anyone watch the Yankees/Rangers game last night? The Yanks were roundly booed by their fans for their play in the later innings. This is a team that won the World Series last year, and are currently in the ALCS.
Nebraskans are not New Yorkers (I know, I lived up there) but when high expectations go unfulfilled some people lose all sense of perspective. That’s true at NU, KSU, Texas, and everywhere I’ve ever been.
by Chris Wilson on Oct 20, 2010 9:55 AM CDT up reply actions
Chris, agree on most all this, but
I think there is a big difference between what fans yell from the stands and then confronting a kid as he walks to his car, or a coach or coach’s family at the grocery store. If I paid for my seat, booing is part of the admission price. But in the parking lot, and posting to a kid’s facebook page? That’s on a different level. Now, I’m not saying other fan bases are not capable of this – but from what I’ve heard, this is on a different level at NU. If coachs kids are getting booed at high school FB games, this may negatively effect NU’s ability to recruit talent and assistant coaches in the long run
oh hail the Purple and White
A lot of changes have been made since 2007.
About everything, in fact. I don’t think it will affect NU’s ability to recruit talent.
Here’s the thing: every fan base with high expectations is like this. I know you read the stuff Texas fans and media were saying after they lost two in a row. OU fans call for Bob Stoops head whenever he loses a game.
The parking lot thing has happened forever, it just didn’t get publicized. I was at a game (not involving the Huskers) in Eugene, Oregon in the early 1990s. No one expected the Ducks to win, and after they got throttled the fans over the corner the players exited out of threw bottles and stuff on the players as they walked past. I’ve seen other incidents spanning 30 years, both in Nebraska and out. Alcohol and fan anger at losses isn’t new.
Now the Facebook page thing is something no one had to think about six or seven years ago… forcing someone to sit down and write a letter after a bad loss compared to posting on Facebook weeds out a lot of the critics. Even an email, which would have been private, is different because it doesn’t incite other fans to do the same. Welcome to the age of Technology.
Back to your original point, I think what would hurt recruiting is if the Athletic Department hung these kids out to dry, hung the assistant coaches out to dry. That hasn’t happened. Any fan base that generates the interest Nebraska does, including most of the Big Ten, sees things like this happen after every loss and probably a few wins. It is unfortunate and unfair and classless, but it is reality.

I've never sat in the Season-ticket sections of the Bill,
But how many KSU fans are idiotic enough to yell obscenities at the coaches (with no chance of hearing them) ??
I sat through the KSU / KU game, and while I understand it only takes 2 idiots to give me a bad impression, I was still a little surprised at the anger vocally directed towards the coaching staff from 2-3 people sitting with the season ticket holders.
Is this common?
screw this, I should be sleeping anyway.
Well,
my experience is fairly limited to the student section, but even then, I never remember anyone yelling obscenities at the K-State coaches…and I got to enjoy the mind-numbing ineptness of the Ron Prince era. Now, every so often I’ll hear someone say “Goddammit Cosh” or something to that effect, but it never seems as though it’s intended to be heard and taken literally.
season ticket area
Most of the time the season ticket holders are long term, so they’ve seen good and bad.
One friend I’ve sat with has a gent who always says ‘big play, big play’ … so that is entertaining. You can be around someone who is a fanatic but knows nothing, while other instances will have a section that could help HCBS call plays.
What is really entertaining is when single game tickets are sold and you have a long time season ticket holder let you know he isn’t going to stand the entire game (we scored a bunch so we stood a bunch of times as we cheered the Cats on to victory — sorry).
IMHO the student section is more harsh on the coaching staff than the average season ticket holder … but everyone can be vocal (except the press box).

About the student section
They are definitely harsh, but they’re on the opposite side of the field from our team and coaches. I’ve heard the opposition’s players get an earful a time or two, though.
But probably not on the way to their cars, with their families standing right there.
