In other words, the Big 12 championship -- as my colleague Doug Gottlieb blogged about Monday morning -- is running through Manhattan this season.

Alas, poor Dana
made the goof of trying to say we don’t play in Lawrence this year when she initially posted this last night.
Which was funny after Musburger said the fans ought to not be saying “We own Texas” when we still have to visit Austin — which HE then later corrected, subtly, in their live shot on SportsCenter.

Well in their defense
It was only until last night they learned that the Big 12 was seperated into North/South divisions – so they had no idea how the schedule works….

This is going to be a wild ride. Nice win last night. As I said on our site a Kansas State win helps Kansas, but it also signals a third and very likely candidate for the conference title. It’s been a while since the Big 8…oops…Big 12 North has been this good.

What's amusing me
is that I’ve been scanning various places, and everywhere I’ve looked… KU fans are happy. Yeah, they’re happy we knocked off Texas, but it’s more than that — they’re happy that we’re relevant. They’re happy that KU-KSU now means something other than just the Sunflower Showdown. Rather than puffing up their chests and trying to look tough, they’re celebrating the return of The Rivalry, where beating the other guy is actually a reflection on your team rather than just something you were expected to do.
Which is as it should be, I think. I mean, at the end of the 1990 season, KU had been to the NCAA Tournament 19 times… and K-State had been 20. (And the only reason for the discrepancy was that KU was on probation in ‘89!) THAT was how the rivalry was defined 20 years ago. It shouldn’t have surprised me that older KU fans are actually thrilled right now, but it did.

definitely
K-State isn’t Missouri, we’re rivals, but it’s still Kansas. Kansas is competing for a National Championship virtually every season, we know that the more tough teams and big games you play during the regular season, the better prepared you are come tournament time.
Oh and by the way, I will give props to KSU, they are a good team, but for Dana O’Neil to say the Big 12 title runs through Manhattan is absurd, until someone takes it from us it runs through Lawrence.

That's not the way I took it.
I didn’t take it as she thought we were now the favorites or that it is ours to lose, because clearly it is not.
I thought it referenced more to the schedule. When you look at the scheduling of the top 3, there are 2 games in Manhattan, 1 in Austin, and 1 in Lawrence. If all the home teams win (which is looking like a strong possibiity) the Cat’s will have a clear advantage. Therefore, the most (being a numerical value) important games directly effecting the Big 12 championship are running through Manhattan.
Then again, anything that is “tweeted” needs to be taken with a grain of salt. I frequently check ESPN for updates and notice those twitter updates. Every two minutes there’s another yahoo tweeting about Team X or Player Y being the best in the conference after watching their latest game. They make ridiculous claim after ridiculous claim. They’ll ride the bandwagon team of the moment to death.

yep...
I think it was in reference to the way the schedule shakes out as well.

jonfmorse...
I completely agree with you. Most Kansas fans see a relevant Kansas State and even a relevant Missouri for that matter as a positive. Does it mean we’ll have to swallow our pride a couple times each year potentially? Yes it does, but it’s better for our program, it’s better for the Big 12 and it’s obviously better for both those schools as well.
From a Kansas perspective, we’ve cruised through a weak Big 12 North conference too many times and end up in the tourney without being truly battle tested. There is no substitute for going on the road and having to play in Bramlage or Mizzou Arena against very good teams and very good fans that are that fired up. These are tests you can’t find anywhere no matter who you schedule. In years past those games obviously didn’t have the same impact. In the end it hopefully means a tougher, more battle tested team come tourney time.
Plus as you say…it’s the return of a rivalry. One that as someone growing up on Kansas in the 90’s…didn’t exist for me. Now it does, it’s fun…in fact my brother is a Wildcat, he’s never been a big sports fan…but this has definitely fueled a little bit of a common bond(I guess that’s what you’d call it) for us in the sports world.

i love it
i know this win does not do anything for the Cats except make us matter a little more, and give all Cat fans something to cheer about, but this was a big win. Most people say that Texas was one of the best teams, in a while, and i would agree, but they are no longer invicable(sp).
I love this quote from dana. I think it was based on schedules as well, but even if its not, its good to here that its running through manhattan, rather than lawerence, austin, norman, like it has for the last several years. We matter now, yeah.
Go 'Cats!!!
