Star-divide

Football

Kevin Haskin, Topeka Capital-Journal -- Big 12 schedule needs updating: Now this is a take on the Big 12 schedule that I haven't seen before.  Haskin proposes more conference games earlier in the season, similar to the SEC, as a way to reduce the chances of a bloody Saturday where MAC, Sun Belt and Conference USA opponents topple league foes.  I haven't had enough time to think about all the ramifications of this, so I'll leave the floor to you in the comments section.  I'm pretty sure I know what Bill Snyder would think of it.

Austin Meek, TCJ -- No shakeup at QB: At this point, unless Daniel Thomas can play better at QB with Keithen Valentine at running back, we may as well put Carson Coffman in there and let him take his lumps.  He can only get better with experience.

UCLA

Coach Rick Neuheisel has yet to name a starter for this weekend's game.  Most seem to be guessing that UCLA will start true freshman Richard Brehaut, although 2008 starter Kevin Craft could factor into the equation.  Also, using some info from BOTC, Nestor from Bruins Nation has a roundup on K-State to start the week.  At least at BN, UCLA fans seem to be taking this game seriously.

The Fourum

Link.  Srsly, Beth Men...err, Persondenhall is the most-commented-about writer for the Collegian I've seen in a long time.  I guess when you write about the "virtues" of vegetarianism in the middle of Kansas, you're bound to get that type of reaction.

So my friend goes to UNL, and she hates their newspaper so much that she reads the Collegian online.

Heather: I'm going to go home and eat a 12-ounce steak with bacon and eggs just for you.

Me and my roommates had Manwich for supper last night. Oops, I mean "Peoplewich."

Which is totally not necessary, because we know this team, and we’re not.

Have some faith...

I know after the special teams debacle it’s hard, but our defense is playing well and remember ‘03 losing to Marshall. Nobody probably thought we’d improve that much by the end of the season. I’m still wearing my rose colored glasses :)

The difference is that when KSU lost to Marshall in '03, it was because Roberson was gone.

The team got better because he came back and got healthy at the end of the year.

There is no Roberson to save this team down the line.

The defense was very improved...

It wasn’t just Roberson. The first 5 decent opponents in 03 we gave up 28, 27, 24, 38, and 20 points. The last 6 we gave up 6, 10, 0, 9, 14 and 7 points.

Was it the opponents or the defense itself?

I know that in ’03, KSU ended up playing Nebraska (at the time, not good offensively with Lord at the helm), ISU, KU, and MU…none of whom at the time were very good. The first five opponents that year (Texas, Oklahoma St., Marshall, etc.) were actually decent teams.

Yes, the defense got better. However, the reason KSU lost to Marshall was because Schwinn was awful. KSU lost to OSU because Roberson couldn’t get going offensively (due to rust), and KSU would have beaten Texas that year had the defender not hit Roberson’s injured hand causing him to fumble inside the red zone. KSU could have put them away at that time, but the next series, Young threw that prayer downfield that was caught for a big gain that ultimately lead to the win.

Again, the defense improved, but KSU wouldn’t have gone very far in ’03 had Roberson not come back. If Schwinn lead the offense all year, KSU would have struggled to get bowl eligible.
