Open Game Thread: Kansas State vs. Louisiana - Lafayette
Kansas St. Wildcats at Louisiana Ragin Cajuns, Sep 12, 2009 6:00 PM CDT

Kansas State Wildcats (1-0) AT Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns (1-0)
Battle in the Bayou
Cajun Field - Lafayette, La.
Saturday, Sept. 12, 2009 - 6 PM CST
ESPN360
K-State looks to bounce back from a disappointing season opener by going down to the Bayou to face the Ragin' Cajuns of Louisiana-Lafayette. It should be hot, humid, and the linemen will most likely reek of swamp ass.
At the time I write this, K-State is a seven point favorite. However, the general sentiment amongst talking heads and message boarders is that the game could be much closer than that, or even (gulp) a loss for the Wildcats.
Hang out here at BOTC for the game and enjoy talking amongst each other in this thread. Also, drop periodic, easy to read score updates because I'll be at a good friend's wedding and unable to partake in excitement.

Hey, you stole me header!
LOL. j/k
I don’t normally get psyched up about these sorts of things, but last night the Buffs had one of the most well-managed, humorous, epic meltdowns I have seen in the sports blogging world. Members of eight different SB sites, including me and Panjandrum, dropped in not so much to gloat, but to offer our condolences on the demise of competitive Colorado football.
You can read them here, if you’re looking to get back into a football frame of mind this fine morning:
2nd Half Suicide Hotline Thread (the best one)
I found these comments particularly amusing:
If I wanted to quit drinking…
I’d take a shot for every CU touchdown
Our team got all confused when the coach mentioned the “Glass Bowl”
too bad they’re high on the slow-y leaves and not the crack
I wish we could pick up LaGarette to make this interesting
I think we could of played (Colorado School of) Mines and still lost
Think of Colorado’s season as the mid-major stimulus plan!
Buffs for clunkers!
The Japanese have a way to take care of disgrace
In all seriousness, I’m not going to poke fun at the Buffs too much, for two reasons:
1. It’s eerily uncomfortable because it’s a literal repeat of what we went through last season: Sub-100 defense, abandoning the running game, lack of coaching, recruiting drop-off, no adjustments, players giving up, coach giving excuses, no money for a buyout, realizing your season is over in September, feeling like you have to root against your team, etc. Any of that sound familiar?
2. We very well could lose tonight and be the second-biggest laughingstock in the conference, so why sling stones?
So, to summarize… Colorado football =

Sweet! I can watch the game!
Got a buddy with Comcast. I was able to do the Remote Access, but Comcast has an additional level of security that required him to set up his Comcast.com e-mail and password. Sheesh.
For all that effort and roundabout legwork, we damn well better win tonight.
Dez Bryant of Okie Lite just ripped off a huge punt return
OSU now only trails 24-21. The Poke comeback is on!
OSU takes the lead for the first time today, 28-24
Houston missed at least 5 tackles on the scoring run. Yeesh.
Seriously, guys...
Score updates please.
TIA.

Texas now leads comfortably, 41-10
TCU beat Virginia, 30-14. I’m pissed that they gave up the shutout.
Please tell me that isn't really how bad coffmans accuracy is
Hit the tightend there and it’s 6

I may be in and out tonight...
got some “socializing” to do.
So far so good. I have a buddy at the Mission Theatre watching the game, he said it’s pretty packed.
Shit, missed field goal, I spoke too soon.

EMAW does not intend to alienate those of the female gender. For those who are offended, you may refer to me as EHAW (Every Human A Wildcat). Our faithful four-legged friends may feel comfortable with EPAW (Every Pet A Wildcat). However, we thus arrive at a paradox.
First drive stalls
Hartman forces a fumble on UL’s very first play.
We get to 4th and 1 on the 1. Weibert false start costs us what looked like a good option play. Cherry misses the point-blank FG right. He sucks. Doerr should kick.
Wasted opportunity to take the crowd out of it. Fuck my life.
3 and out for UL
Big Daniel Calvin stuffs the 3rd down run.
Hartman calls fair catch. How will our offense fuck up this time?
Hook for Coffman
Soon, please. No touch on his passing.
I can't complain, but sometimes I still do. - Life's Been Good
I don't think it matters whether Carson has a better grasp of the offense...
we need a playmaker in there.
I guess there’s no guarantee GG would throw any better, but let’s at least find out.

Move the ball dammit
We need to jump on these guys. We shouldn’t have to depend our D to win this game.
Lane Train goes down!
UCLA wins in Neyland. Next week will be ugly if we don’t get Grant prepped fast.
Off Topic Buffs
I had a great time reading all the Ralphie Report misery last night. Good to see Bracket Cat there. I especially liked having Ralphie run over Hawkins in pregame. I’ll have to leave in a bit for a Buckeye party, but will check in later. Cmon Bill, make these guys toughen up.
After watching ucla beat tennesee I am now convinced next week we will get trucked
And unfortunately I have front row tickets to it
by Clubbzilla on Sep 12, 2009 6:28 PM CDT via mobile reply actions
Wow! We'll win by punting!
Cmon Gregory. Great, confusion. Our biggest problem is lining up and snapping the ball together.
No passing game
Unbelievable – how could the passing game have evaporated so quickly? At least the defense has showed up.
I can't complain, but sometimes I still do. - Life's Been Good
Because we have two QBs who can't throw
This is what happens when you lose a 1st round draft pick at QB and no other QBs commit to you b/c he has locked up the starting job for three years.
Something has to give
There’s gotta be someone that can lead this offense. Both defenses are controlling this game so far.
I can't complain, but sometimes I still do. - Life's Been Good
So, now we know why CC was starting
He sucks, but GG can’t even get the ball near a receiver.
Yikes. This will be 2001 all over again, only worse.
At least the defense looks improved. MUCH better tackling fundamentals, from the DL to the LBs to the secondary.
Louisiana will win
Why, you ask?
Because they can actually complete a pass.
Not just one, but several.
Defense needs some help
Way too many chances for LaLa’s offense. Two to’s with no points. The offense needs to find something on this possession.

No score
A holding penalty set us back, and then we missed a FG attempt from the 25.

FG blocked
Crap – missed FG inside the 10, then another blocked. No special teams so far.

actually it was a mishandled snap/fumble
i’m watching 360. it’s depressing.

3 and out following the missed FG.

Coffman back in, passing game arrives with completions to Banks and Brown.

Apparently, he needed to be benched to get his head out his ass
All I know is Gregory sure showed us why he hasn’t been starting.
Maybe Thomas?
He did take a snap earlier.

Need a stop
LaLa first down, KSU 30. Need a stop here.
I can't complain, but sometimes I still do. - Life's Been Good
Simple diagnosis
We are losing the line of scrimmage on every play.
Lack of strength + 113 OL starts + injuries to Harold and Terrell = no push and absolutely no pass rush
Maybe clock will save us
Hopefully, with 8.5 sec left.
I can't complain, but sometimes I still do. - Life's Been Good
Wow, we got outcoached on that play
Stacked the line, and they beat us with a simple fake/tight end slip.
Score please

Plays are there
According to folks watching the game, the plays are there to be had. Man-to-man on receivers, 8 in the box. The receivers are open, but we can’t make the easy throw. Coffman is locking on his receiver before the snap.
The plays are there to be made. Just be average.

Prince's QB plan?
Obvious that Prince was going to be helpless with JF. I wonder what his plan was…

snyder's outfit looks awesome
he’s got on a purple nylon jumpsuit and his jacket is tucked into his elastic-waist pants.

Defense holds
LaLa made it to midfield, but punts.

For consulting
He would serve as a special consultant to the AD.

Good offense so far
Picked up 4th and one at LaLa 41.

Coffman in
Coffman got it on a sneak, then option keeper for 8.

Another 4th down conversion
Coffman with another keeper for a first down on 4th and 1.

Cherry misses again
Cherry misses another FG, this time from 47 (I think).
I can't complain, but sometimes I still do. - Life's Been Good
I love that we gave a schollie to a long snapper
but in 3 years, Prince never found a kicker or a punter worth a damn.
Better offense
Better offensive effort that time. There was a nice pass to Snipes on the drive. Mostly runs.
I can't complain, but sometimes I still do. - Life's Been Good
Good play so far...
3 and out for defense, now we’ve driven to the LaLa 30, 1st down.

Can we scour the local Div II teams for a kicker? :)

*check that (could be 18-14)
missed XP, 2 missed FGs, and a bad snap on a FG which wasn’t Cherry’s fault
I'm hiding out in the big city blinking.
No kicker, terrible QB play, insufficient line play, only playmakers are RBs
This is 2001 all over again, except with slightly better WRs.
...and no Roberson
I doubt that we have a QB that will dominate two years from now.
I can't complain, but sometimes I still do. - Life's Been Good
Saw a comment about the plays being there from earlier
I totally agree. We just haven’t had an arm to get the ball on target at all. Three easy touchdown possibilities if the ball would have been even close. Add a horrid kicking/special teams and you get our 09 wildcats
by Clubbzilla on Sep 12, 2009 8:38 PM CDT via mobile reply actions
At least we're playing D
The defense has played well, despite the depth. Thomas is starting to run the ball well, too.

1st and goal at the 4.
Nice catch by Mastrud.

wow tipped be defense then mastrud tips it to himself for the catch

Good thing, because Carson threw it behind him AGAIN
That said, CC has looked a lot better this half then he did at any other time this season. Keep improving, Carson, cause you’re all we got.
Even coffmans completions are scary
That was thrown into coverage and behind mastrud. Tip and great concentration bail him out. Against a big12 backer that’s a pick

4th and 10 from the KSU 31. If their kicker can hit this, we need to kidnap him.

Signs of hope:
- Saw some toughness out of the OL in the 2nd half. They wore UL down a little.
- Defense much improved. We can actually tackle again.
- Daniel Thomas is the TRUTH.
- Bill Snyder owned that 2nd half with clock management, play selection and coaching moxie. A Ron Prince team would have packed it in after going into halftime down 2-14, and would have been blown out in the 2nd half. Snyder gave us a realistic shot to win a game we had NO business winning.
That’s all I got.
They care now
Snyder was looking for the guys to care that they lost. That’s the first battle. I actually don’t feel too badly about next week. I’m so thankful that we can tackle and show effort again. I think the offense will come around. Banks has to get loose.
Exactly...
Like Bracket said, a Prince team would have been so degraded and whipped at halftime that they would have thrown in the towl.
Snyder has these guys staying patient and believing they can pull it out. He is the same coach that coaxed a win out of his team after trailing Iowa State 21-0 at halftime in 2001 (year?).

When you make them work hard, they actually feel like there's an investment...
Keep working them hard. Some of them can become legitimate D1 football players. Not all of them, but some of them.
Just keep moving forward.

Tough loss guys
Really difficult road game for a 1st year coach (or whatever Snyder is considered to be).
Bad week for the B12, sorry to see you guys on the loss column. Best of luck next week.
So...
our special teams crapped the bed….for the second week in a row.
And, our QB’s can’t find an open receiver to save their life….
At least our defense is somewhat coherent, and Daniel Thomas is, you know, good.
We better find the second dimension to our offense in order to have a chance against the Bruins next week. 14-30 passing??? Not if you want to survive in the Big 12, my friend…

Reaction...
Seen the game on 360. For those of you who didn’t, if it sounded like our QB situation is bad, it looked much worse. If something doesn’t change quickly in that facet of the game, i’m thinking 3 +/- 1 wins this season. I’ve almost completely given up hope on CC and don’t have much left for GG either. At this point my* leash on either of these guys is about as long as HCBS’s on Alan Webb.
Things I’d* like to see happen at the QB position:
1) Let D-Train take every snap. Honestly, can he throw much worse?
2) What about Hartman? He was a QB…? (losing him in the secondary would hurt though)
3) Klein…? how bad does he throw? He’s covering punts on special teams now, but can he throw the football?
disclaimer: I really don’t think we were that bad in every other aspect. yes, our D-Line got slightly owned. but given the circumstances, that’s not epic (LALAs veteran line, our injury devastated one) and it’s good to see our D and rushing keep us in games.
*my opinions don’t matter, this is my coaching from my couch. obviously HCBS knows a heck of a lot more about football than i ever will and a heck of a lot less about the visual aesthetics of wearing a tucked in purple jumpsuit.
From now on...
Double TE sets, DT at QB and the rest of the backfield = RBs/FBs
WRs will just have to convert to RB for this season.
Hail to the Purple, Hail to the White
Wildcat in spirit, Wildcat in fight
Hail Alma Mater from sea to sea
Onward forever, Hail Victory!
There could be a ressurection
of the wishbone. One receiver, three RB’s/FB’s, one TE, and someone to take the snap. I think we got the players for that…
That might be somewhat entertaining...
what have we got to lose? (Other than WR recruits)
Hail to the Purple, Hail to the White
Wildcat in spirit, Wildcat in fight
Hail Alma Mater from sea to sea
Onward forever, Hail Victory!
