Open Game Thread: Kansas State vs. Louisiana - Lafayette

Kansas St. Wildcats at Louisiana Ragin Cajuns, Sep 12, 2009 6:00 PM CDT

KansasStateLeftLouisianaRight

Kansas State Wildcats (1-0) AT Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns (1-0)

Battle in the Bayou
Cajun Field - Lafayette, La.
Saturday, Sept. 12, 2009 - 6 PM CST

ESPN360

K-State looks to bounce back from a disappointing season opener by going down to the Bayou to face the Ragin' Cajuns of Louisiana-Lafayette. It should be hot, humid, and the linemen will most likely reek of swamp ass.

At the time I write this, K-State is a seven point favorite. However, the general sentiment amongst talking heads and message boarders is that the game could be much closer than that, or even (gulp) a loss for the Wildcats.

Hang out here at BOTC for the game and enjoy talking amongst each other in this thread.  Also, drop periodic, easy to read score updates because I'll be at a good friend's wedding and unable to partake in excitement.

Hey, you stole me header!

LOL. j/k

I don’t normally get psyched up about these sorts of things, but last night the Buffs had one of the most well-managed, humorous, epic meltdowns I have seen in the sports blogging world. Members of eight different SB sites, including me and Panjandrum, dropped in not so much to gloat, but to offer our condolences on the demise of competitive Colorado football.

You can read them here, if you’re looking to get back into a football frame of mind this fine morning:

1st Half

2nd Half Suicide Hotline Thread (the best one)

The Day After

I found these comments particularly amusing:

If I wanted to quit drinking…

I’d take a shot for every CU touchdown
Our team got all confused when the coach mentioned the “Glass Bowl”

too bad they’re high on the slow-y leaves and not the crack
I wish we could pick up LaGarette to make this interesting
I think we could of played (Colorado School of) Mines and still lost
Think of Colorado’s season as the mid-major stimulus plan!

Buffs for clunkers!
The Japanese have a way to take care of disgrace

In all seriousness, I’m not going to poke fun at the Buffs too much, for two reasons:

1. It’s eerily uncomfortable because it’s a literal repeat of what we went through last season: Sub-100 defense, abandoning the running game, lack of coaching, recruiting drop-off, no adjustments, players giving up, coach giving excuses, no money for a buyout, realizing your season is over in September, feeling like you have to root against your team, etc. Any of that sound familiar?

2. We very well could lose tonight and be the second-biggest laughingstock in the conference, so why sling stones?

So, to summarize… Colorado football =

Sweet! I can watch the game!

Got a buddy with Comcast. I was able to do the Remote Access, but Comcast has an additional level of security that required him to set up his Comcast.com e-mail and password. Sheesh.

For all that effort and roundabout legwork, we damn well better win tonight.

So far so good. I have a buddy at the Mission Theatre watching the game, he said it’s pretty packed.

Shit, missed field goal, I spoke too soon.

First drive stalls

Hartman forces a fumble on UL’s very first play.

We get to 4th and 1 on the 1. Weibert false start costs us what looked like a good option play. Cherry misses the point-blank FG right. He sucks. Doerr should kick.

Wasted opportunity to take the crowd out of it. Fuck my life.

3 and out for UL

Big Daniel Calvin stuffs the 3rd down run.

I don't think it matters whether Carson has a better grasp of the offense...

we need a playmaker in there.

I guess there’s no guarantee GG would throw any better, but let’s at least find out.

Weibert at C

BTW – Weibert has played center almost the entire game.

Comes down to a FG attempt

4th and 10 from the KSU 31. If their kicker can hit this, we need to kidnap him.

He did, 15-17.

Less than 30 seconds to go, no timeouts. Gotta look at those missed FG’s.

So we're gonna lose, huh?

Signs of hope:

- Saw some toughness out of the OL in the 2nd half. They wore UL down a little.

- Defense much improved. We can actually tackle again.

- Daniel Thomas is the TRUTH.

- Bill Snyder owned that 2nd half with clock management, play selection and coaching moxie. A Ron Prince team would have packed it in after going into halftime down 2-14, and would have been blown out in the 2nd half. Snyder gave us a realistic shot to win a game we had NO business winning.

That’s all I got.

They care now

Snyder was looking for the guys to care that they lost. That’s the first battle. I actually don’t feel too badly about next week. I’m so thankful that we can tackle and show effort again. I think the offense will come around. Banks has to get loose.

Exactly...

Like Bracket said, a Prince team would have been so degraded and whipped at halftime that they would have thrown in the towl.

Snyder has these guys staying patient and believing they can pull it out. He is the same coach that coaxed a win out of his team after trailing Iowa State 21-0 at halftime in 2001 (year?).

When you make them work hard, they actually feel like there's an investment...

Keep working them hard. Some of them can become legitimate D1 football players. Not all of them, but some of them.

Just keep moving forward.

Tough loss guys

Really difficult road game for a 1st year coach (or whatever Snyder is considered to be).

Bad week for the B12, sorry to see you guys on the loss column. Best of luck next week.

So...

our special teams crapped the bed….for the second week in a row.

And, our QB’s can’t find an open receiver to save their life….

At least our defense is somewhat coherent, and Daniel Thomas is, you know, good.

We better find the second dimension to our offense in order to have a chance against the Bruins next week. 14-30 passing??? Not if you want to survive in the Big 12, my friend…

Reaction...

Seen the game on 360. For those of you who didn’t, if it sounded like our QB situation is bad, it looked much worse. If something doesn’t change quickly in that facet of the game, i’m thinking 3 +/- 1 wins this season. I’ve almost completely given up hope on CC and don’t have much left for GG either. At this point my* leash on either of these guys is about as long as HCBS’s on Alan Webb.

Things I’d* like to see happen at the QB position:
1) Let D-Train take every snap. Honestly, can he throw much worse?
2) What about Hartman? He was a QB…? (losing him in the secondary would hurt though)
3) Klein…? how bad does he throw? He’s covering punts on special teams now, but can he throw the football?

disclaimer: I really don’t think we were that bad in every other aspect. yes, our D-Line got slightly owned. but given the circumstances, that’s not epic (LALAs veteran line, our injury devastated one) and it’s good to see our D and rushing keep us in games.

*my opinions don’t matter, this is my coaching from my couch. obviously HCBS knows a heck of a lot more about football than i ever will and a heck of a lot less about the visual aesthetics of wearing a tucked in purple jumpsuit.

From now on...

Double TE sets, DT at QB and the rest of the backfield = RBs/FBs
WRs will just have to convert to RB for this season.

There could be a ressurection

of the wishbone. One receiver, three RB’s/FB’s, one TE, and someone to take the snap. I think we got the players for that…

by jtarkman on Sep 13, 2009 7:56 PM CDT up reply actions

That might be somewhat entertaining...

what have we got to lose? (Other than WR recruits)
