…for Carlos. CrossCyed from Clone Chronicles has mentioned a few times in the past how well Torres was playing in the minors, but I didn’t know if anything would come of it.

Torres is starting tomorrow in place of John Danks. I can’t see him getting more than this start given how well Clayton Richard pitched today, but he should slide into a long relief role in the bullpen if he doesn’t completely bomb against Tampa.

He’s been pitching well in AAA and deserved the callup. He’s got a good fastball, curve, and cutter—which he hopefully can use to neutralize lefties in the Rays’ order like Carl Crawford and Carlos Pena and a powerful switch-hitter in Ben Zobrist.

Fun fact: he’ll be the first K-Stater to play in the majors since Craig Wilson, who played his last game with the White Sox in 2000. He’s only the fifth Wildcat ever to play in the majors, with the other four being Wilson, Ted Power, Bob Randall, and Andy Replogle.

Six innings, three runs against a very good Rays lineup…very solid. He was a bit tentative at times±he only threw 53 strikes in 95 pitches—but he was able to battle back and keep most of Tampa’s lineup in check. Pat Burrell really had his number and he made one bad pitch to Gabe Gross that went about 400 feet, but outside of that, he did a very nice job keeping the Rays lineup in check. Granted, I was sitting in the upper deck, but I really like what I saw with his cutter and breaking stuff.

Another interesting thing: he’s one of the few starters I’ve ever seen who goes exclusively from the stretch. I guess it makes sense, though, given that he’s shuttled between the bullpen and rotation for most of his career.

He certainly pitched well enough to get another start—so you guys should be rooting for the blister that’s on John Danks’ finger right now. Even if he doesn’t get that next start soon, he’ll be back up in the majors or rotation at some point again this year unless the Sox are incredibly lucky to avoid any injuries (and given that Jose Contreras is in the rotation…that’s unlikely).
