Houston Regional Live Thread: K-State vs. Rice (Part Deux)

What: NCAA Regional Baseball Tournament, Houston Regional
Where: Houston, Texas | Reckling Park (5,368)
Who: K-State (43-16-1) vs. Rice (41-16)
When: May 31, 2009 | 6:00 p.m.
Media: 1350 KMAN | CBS College Sports All-Access
Depending on who wins the Rice/Xavier game (it looks like it will be Rice at this point), KSU will play them tonight at 6 PM for the right to advance to the Super Regional. If they lose that game, they will play the same team again on Monday.
Let's hope the Bat Cats seal the deal tonight and continue on with their greatest season in history.

Game time Monday?
After losing 8-0 tonight to Rice, we’ll meet them again tomorrow. Anyone know what time? Big 12 teams are dropping like crazy so I hope we get the win tomorrow. Think AJ will start? I would start him.

No chance
You can’t pitch on one day’s rest, especially when you throw 140+ pitches. I have no idea who we’re going to start. Lance Hoge should be available for a couple innings after only throwing 80 pitches on Friday. My guess is we’ll see Thomas Rooke and Evan Marshall.
First pitch tomorrow is 6 p.m.

if needed.
Rice should be on starter #5,
- first game ( I forget who they played)
- vs KSU
- vs Xavier
- vs KSU
so #5 goes today. So a mid week starter or maybe a strong reliever to start this game.
KSU should on their regular Sun starter. So the question becomes who is better KSU’s #3 or Rice’s #5? Rice has some depth, but you have to like KSU, at least in the pitching match-up. It would have helped though had KSU been able to get into Rice’s bullpen some.
KSU needs to take a better approach at the plate, some comments from yesterdays day show that the cats were a little nervous.

We've used our third starter...
…Hoge (usually the Saturday starter) went on Friday against Xavier. Morris (usually the Friday starter) went on Saturday against Rice. Vogel (usually the Sunday starter) went yesterday against Rice. So we’ve used our weekend starters, and I have no idea who we’ll send out there today, but I have no doubt we’ll use at least three or four pitchers. My guess would be Allen, Marshall, or Rooke starting, and we may see Hoge for an inning or so at some point if needed. On the bright side, Rice is now deeper into its rotation, although that didn’t matter yesterday when a freshman tossed a three-hitter against us.
I didn’t catch much of the game yesterday, but clearly our bats were off. My guess is a combination of nerves and overconfidence. Nerves based on the fact that a win meant advancing to the super-regional, and overconfidence based on the weekend’s previous hitting performances and the fact that Rice had a freshman on the mound. We need to be more patient today and make Rice’s pitcher(s) work.

You are correct
Not sure how I missed a game in there, but I did. Maybe because they played Rice twice…
KSU needs someone to step up and pitch well today.
