Around SBN: NFL Owners Vote to Change Trade Deadline

K-State commit Wally Judge has been named a McDonald's All American. That's K-State's second Mickey D's player in the Frank Martin era, with Michael Beasley obviously being the other. Another player being recruited by K-State, DeMarcus Cousins, is on the team as well.

I also got a good chuckle from this KC Star article from yesterday, noting two KU recruits who would be considered for the team, and noting that Judge had "an outside shot" at making the team. Neither KU recruit made the team; Judge did.

Congrats Wally!

Keep the good news coming! Now do some work on Cousins while you are together there.

And the best part might be knowing how much of a thorn in the side of KU fans it is that neither of their recruits made it while Wally did…love it.

Truthfully doesn't really bother me....

We’ve had just as many MCD’s AA pan out as those that didn’t live up to it so it’s pretty irrelevant in my mind. Basically what I’m saying is they don’t award wins and championships based on it you’ve still got to earn those. Congrats though, it definitely shows your getting in on a better caliber player.

12+ hours for someone to take that bait...

…I’m truly shocked :)

Can’t disagree with anything you said. But just knowing there are some jayhawk fans out there fuming about it is enough for me.

I'm sure there are some out there that might be aggravated

but my guess is those aren’t the most rational ones…every fan base has those more obsessed with the failures of others than there own success.

I was looking at it a little bit last night though and here’s a few Jayhawks that were MCD’s AA and didn’t really live up to the billing…

Eric “Chenoworthless”
Calvin Rayford
Lester Earl (injuries)
Ryan Robertson (good but never great)

Here are some counterparts to those that I would take any day of the week and didn’t make it

Kirk Hinrich over RRobertson
Adonis Jordan over CRayford
Darnell Jackson over LEarl
Scott Pollard over Eric “I tour with Dave Matthews” Chenowith

all these guys probably exceeded expectations.

Never said anything about rational fans...

…is that an oxymoron? Sure seems to be at some points in time.

That said, good to know that “Chenoworthless” has become universally accepted.

As far as the meat of your post…it happens everywhere, although I can’t think of many I would take over Beasley off the top of my head. More a function of our lack of McD’s AA than anything else, but true nonetheless.

by gw1754 on Feb 20, 2009 11:23 AM CST up reply actions

well without a doubt a good amount of them do succeed..

Beasley a prime example and one I think anyone would have to admit they would take in a heartbeat.

Rational fans…yeah the further along I go in life the more I think that is an oxymoron, but I can hope right?

As far as Chenoworthless…to my knowledge that was universally accepted before he even departed Kansas for his illustrious career in the D-League. He and Jason Ben"neck" might have had some good matchups complete with a contest to see who could make the biggest “WTF” face when they were called for a foul or missed an open layup.

I have a theory

Everyone seems to agree that the Wear twins wouldn’t be on the roster if they had committed to a school other than UNC. It does seem like Duke and UNC get the benefit of the doubt a little when they construct these rosters.

I put it to you that KU is a similar program. In general, most of their MDAAs live up to the hype, but if there’s a kid they are iffy on, his commitment to KU might perhaps tip the balance in favor of his being invited when he perhaps might not be invited otherwise.

This is not a dig, simply an observation. In fact, if my theory is correct, it’s a compliment to KU’s coaching staff. The McDonald’s people are deferring to their recruiting judgment.

Whereas, if a KSU kid gets on there, you can pretty much assume he earned it straight up, because Frank and Dalonte haven’t earned that kind of respect yet. Land a few more kids like Mike and Wally, though, and keep winning games like they have been, and that may change in time.

I'll buy that...

similar to the theory on Notre Dame football recruits

Just wait till next year.

Most of our pro-level talent didn’t leave this year. Dezmon Briscoe (potential 1st round pick), Kerry Meier, Darrell Stuckey, Justin Thornton, maybe. Next year should be a much better year for Kansas from the NFL perspective.

by rockchalk on Feb 19, 2009 10:48 PM CST up reply actions

Oh, boy

If you truly believe Kerry Meier constitutes “pro-level talent,” then I am embarrassed for you.

Nice college player? Yes.

NFL player? Hell, no.

by BracketCat on Feb 19, 2009 10:51 PM CST up reply actions

Is it really a huge stretch to say he could play at the next level?

I don’t think so…sure he’s probably not a game changer or anything but he’ll get a shot.

Yes it is.

I’m still having a hard time believing he had the season he had last year.

Man do I hate Longhorn fans, well except for the ones that actually went there.

well he pulled that off with a bad leg most of the way...

so I’ll say no it’s not…

The bad leg must have helped him then.

Just looking at the genetics

Shad: I was surprised he ever had an NFL career. He was a good college tight end, but he never really seemed to be the prototypical NFL tight end. I’d say he overachieved for the few years he was with the Titans.

Dylan: ROTFLOL!

Kerry: I’d rate him similar to Shad – overachiver, but not as physically intimidating. That said, his QB/P/whatever else skills might help him get his foot in the door.

I will say this: If he improves as much during his senior year as Jordy did, then yes, he will be drafted decently high. I just haven’t seen enough out of him yet to predict that.

by BracketCat on Feb 20, 2009 7:08 PM CST up reply actions

I'd put him at...

6th rounder in my opinion right now…again may never make it but I think he’ll bet a shot

Just pointing out that KU doesn't seem to be getting much love lately.

And, yes, they still ran K-State off the field. Who didn’t?
