Around SBN: Chauncey Billups Injures Achilles Tendon

A good, long "state of the nation" on K-State basketball right now. Maybe it's too early to say this season is at a crossroads, but with Washington State, UNLV, Xavier and Alabama coming up, we're either going to get better in a hurry or we're going to lose four games in the next month.

It seems to me...

these players lack respect for the system. If they had signed at KU or North Carolina I don’t think they would expect to get minutes and do their own thing, but unfortunately it seems more about individuals than a team at this point. I’m not sure if running till they puke today is the answer….I think losing some games will help though. Basically too many of them think they are hot shit and need to be put in their place…enter a good Washington State team saturday. I do love Frank’s response of buy in or get out. A broken team is not a team at all.

Washington State...

will be my barometer for seeing if Frank is getting through to these guys. I’ll reserve any judgement for after that game. I expected a little time to gel with all the newcomers, but it doesn’t seem like any progress is being made. Not to pick on anyone, but Denis doesn’t seem to be on the same page at all. I love Denis, but I’m not sure that he has the capabilities to be a true point guard. He’s more effective slashing to the bucket and as a shooting guard. I really think that Pullen would be more effective at the point. And my apologies for the rambling…just throwing out some quick observations.

While I sort of agree on Denis

Let’s give him his props when he is due. He had 6 assists versus only 1 turnover on Tuesday, and that’s with trying to throw it in to Merriewether and Ojeleye. Not too shabby.

Frank trusts Denis, therefore I will attempt to do the same. Besides, every time I scream, “No, Denis, don’t shoot that! What are you thinking?”… he makes the damn shot. Every time. Without fail.

Thoughts/Feelings

This probably isn’t going to make any sense, but I’m going to try to explain my take on the leadership/unity issue.

I feel like Frank has given Denny and Jake too much control. I’m all for upperclassman taking responsibility for the younger guys, but they are not the coaches. In interviews, I have felt that some of their comments regarding the freshmen and new players were unnecessary. If I were playing for a team where I felt like I was being coached by the other players, I wouldn’t be happy.

Now, this falls back on Frank if this is actually happening. This entire season he has treated Denny and Jake like they’ve never made a mistake before. And he often says things like, “Everyone sucks, except the 2 guards.” Now, I’m not saying I know more than Frank, but I can see how that would create a little divide between the team. If “Everyone sucks” then just say everyone sucks. They are a team and if they are going to improve, they’re going to have to do it together and not just everyone not named Denny and Jake.

I have stated before my Curtis Kelly concerns, mostly based on his attitude. The freshmen are still figuring this whole thing out and I think they just need some time. But I agree with mjk that many of these players do not seem as humble or coachable as players in years past. And yes, I’m not too proud to admit that I longed for The White Tiger last night.

This is strictly my opinion so take it for what it’s worth. I sit in the 26th row and sometimes the north basket blocks my view of the south lane and a very tall man sits in front of me. So, there’s a lot I don’t know, believe it or not. I do expect a full recovery or a full colapse by 2010, so we will know very soon if this team is going to be able to live up the the hype.

Also, I love Denny, Jake, and Frank and meant no disrespect to any of them. This is just an outsider’s perspective.

Everyone DOES suck, except the two guards

Look, they’re all just telling it like it is. Go back and watch that game again. Jake and Denis are doing what they’re supposed to do. The other guys are screwing up. I mean, they single-handedly won the Dayton game by themselves. Can we hold off criticizing the coach and the guards until we actually start losing games, at least?

by BracketCat on Dec 3, 2009 12:07 PM CST up reply actions

Except the two guards...

“Denis Clemente plays hard, and Martin rewards him with playing time. However, let’s be honest, this isn’t swagger Clemente of a season ago. This is stagger Clemente. He is averaging 13.9 points, 3 assists and 2.7 rebounds, but he’s shooting just 35.9 percent from the field and 61.3 percent from the free throw line. His shot selection often hinders any offensive rhythm, which is a dagger for a team struggling to find some consistency.”

Are you suggesting the Denny has been playing to his full potential? I see room for improvement here. Can we hold off on defending the coach and guards until we actually beat Ft. Hays State by at least 20 points? I’m not calling for anyone’s heads, I’m just suggesting that everyone holds some responsibility for the way we’ve been playing… not just a few. And yes, the other guys are screwing up A LOT.

No, he hasn't

But he’s still playing better than anyone else on the team not named Jamar Samuels or Jacob Pullen.

I’m just astounded anyone is questioning Frank Martin after what we witnessed last season. That man, like Bill Snyder, has my unconditional trust from now until the day he retires or leaves.

Frank

I’m not questioning Frank’s ability to get this thing back on the right track. I’m aware of what he’s done, and I agree you that he has earned our trust. I stated in my first post that I loved Frank and I’m not meaning to sound like I doubt him. I’m just saying, things are far from perfect right now and that is a problem the entire team is going to have to do something about, including Frank and the players who are already doing what’s asked of them on the court. No one has been flawless and I’m not going to pat anyone on the back too hard until I see otherwise.

Maybe you feel that my first post was an attack on Frank, Denny, and Jake. If I didn’t make myself clear, I apologize. I know that most of the blame falls on the other players, but that had already been stated and I was just trying to add onto that. I think we can all agree that much of this team’s problem is rooted in its attitude. I was simply suggesting that this problem would be best tackled if everyone on the team took some responsibility and worked on it and not just a few. I don’t want to astound you anymore. GO CATS!

Also

I’m not trying to be like that guy from the other day with all the exclamation points. I just wanted to clarify my point.

Also, very true observation on your part

We REALLY miss Kent and Colon right now. Yes, they lacked ability to score, but they knew how to box out, rebound, play defense and position themselves to catch a pass. We sorely need that right now.

Team game.

Good comments from every one. As a long distance fan, I rely on many of your comments to get a true read on the team, but my impression is that 5star recruits don’t learn or have the desire to learn the little things that it takes for a basketball team to win. If they get their 3 or 4 highlight plays per game, they’re ok. Too used to being stars and not teammates.

I like Frank’s attitude however. Hope he can break these guys down.

Grow up Freshman whiners :)

In every situation in life you have to learn your place and that usually involves say a few “yes sir’s” or “yes mam’s” along the way. Until you can learn how to work hard and have some humility, there is no deserving anything. Pullen went through the cussing of Frank for two years, and now they know that they are on the same page, so he gets to play. He’s a leader and leaders do teach and coach in a good system. If the other players can’t accept it then they need an attitude adjustment.

Pullen is Frank's right arm now

All the screaming worked. When Pullen criticizes the team, it might as well be coming from Frank. They’re definitely on the same page now.

What the hell is the deal with Sutton?

I remember watching him as a freshman and my dropped because of his athleticism. There were many times last year and the Ft Hays game where he never stood out.

I used to work with an old man that told me- Son, every workplace has a dumbass. If you don't have one where you work, then I'm afraid you're it.

by Warden11 on Dec 5, 2009 9:33 AM CST reply actions

When he's focused, and not upset about something...

…he’s a lockdown defender, the kind of guy who could be conference defender of the year. Unfortunately, one bad call and his focus is gone for a stretch of time. He has all the talent and athleticism in the world, he just needs to get his head in the game on a more consistent basis.

We'll carry the banner high!

I don't understand this as well

It seems like Sutton is the most up and down player ever. I think Frank always attributes this to him getting down on himself. This is something I don’t understand. Is Dom extremely moody or what? I can’t see how, with that much athletic talent, he can be MIA one game and playing like a defensive POY the next. I’m with Warden…. when I watched this kid as a freshman, I thought he’d be at least a solid starter, and possibly all Big12 by this time. At this point, I’d be extremely pleased with solid defensive play every time out. He is a man athletically.

I love ya, Curtis

But apparently the answer to your question is:

Yes.
