RPI WATCH: 12/01/2009
Well, that was an ugly-ass game.
I'm going to try to take my mind off it by salivating over our ever-higher RPI and SOS. Especially since the losing could start in earnest shortly if this team doesn't get it into gear quickly. Might as well enjoy 6-1 while we can, I guess.

Basketball Program
I love Frank Martin’s fire and intensity, but I’m still not sold on his coaching abilities. How can a team with some much ‘talent’ look so horrific at the free throw line, rebounding, standing around on offense, and give up some many back door screens? I am still optimistic this team and coaching staff will find their chemistry this year, but overall, for a coaching group that can recruit so well, it doesn’t appear they can execute on the court. It could get ugly real quick come Big 12 play.
That was hopelessly premature
Wait and see where they are in January and February before you judge the coaching.
Jeez, didn’t we just go through this last season, people? Calm down.
Overall
My opinion was based on not just this year, but the previous couple of years. I admit my athletic experience is more in football, but as I’ve watched our team the previous few years under Coach Martin, I cannot figure out our offensive philosophy. You watch our offensive sets versus most programs, and I’m like, why don’t we do that? Hell, Fort Hays seem to run the same back door pick all night with a lot sucess. It just appears we often times get outcoached, even in victories, but only because the discrepency in talent/size. I hope I eat crow and have the Cats dominate the Big 12 this year.
And yet, the record shows
One NCAA tournament appearance, one NCAA win, and two bubble showings where we among the last 4 to 8 out.
The man can coach. Early games don’t mean shit. 10-6, 10-6 and 9-7 are what matter.
It's no secret
our guys are playing beneath their expectations, but I think it’s part of the learning process. Remember, while our recruiting class was high, we still didn’t have a Xavier Henry, John Wall, Michael Beasley -type player. Judge, Wally Mac and Russell are good players and should grow into great players. But, they need the experience and teaching to be able to grow. Right now they are getting punched in the mouth and realizing that D-1 basketball isn’t the same as playing against elite AAU competition. For the time being, I’ll sit back and trust that Frank is doing what he needs in order to make these guys stronger. College basketball schedules are built in such a way that by the time you start conference play, the young guys should be hitting their stride and finding out if they can really play at this level.
Having said that, if we limp through the last three games on our non-con schedule like we did last night, then yes, the Big 12 season could get ugly.

about our season
we do have a lot of talent. i dont know where that talent is right now though. we have seen how good this team can be. we have experience but for some reason, that doesnt seem to be showing up right now. Pullen and Clemente are doing a good job of scoring, most of the time, but they dont seem to be showing much of that leadership that we need to them to show us and the young freshmen. I hope that this non-con is what we will see all season. we have played great, but we have also played like we are freshmen in high school that dont know how to play basketball. i dont know whats going happen this season, but i hope they eventually get their heads on straight and get brains in those heads. I think Frank knows what he doing. he has been in the Big 12 for 2 years, and showed what a good coach he can be. I think the main problem right now is getting our guys to not do stupid stuff, i.e. kicking the dayton player, and moving forward and learning what we are good at and doing it. Lets have a good season. They may not play the greatest, but they are our guys, so lets not put them down too much, unless they deserve it. Keep our heads up and out of our butts, and well be fine. Go State!!!
Go 'Cats!!!
My prediction
Some of you are going to look back on these posts and laugh.
We will be in the NCAA Tournament in March and we will win at least one game once there. Write it down.
Hell, he nearly got us there last year with a frontcourt of Lu, the White Tiger and Ron freaking Anderson. This will get fixed.
I'll give Frank credit for getting the most of the guys that do buy in.
The question with K-State will be whether or not those young guys accept it this year. They have in the past, so I think the cats should be ok this year.
I used to work with an old man that told me. Son, every workplace has a dumbass, if you don't have one where you work, then I'm afraid you're it.
