I. HATE. YOU. RON. ZOOK.

This hurts. This will hurt big time.

My thoughts

Vic’s bucking to “Dabo Swinney” his way into Zook’s job after next season.

‘Cause there’s no way this is about his family. Champaign ain’t that much closer to South Carolina than Manhattan.

Oh, sure, he’ll make more money and have a sole DC title, but the guy is a nomad.

My guess is he agreed to come help Bill get this thing off the ground in exchange for the experience of coaching with Snyder, which is a great resume booster. I think this is validated by the fact that he was not offered a multi-year contract like some of the other assistants were.

Good luck to him, but as another great coach once said, “Buy in or quit.” We’ll find someone else.

This sucks, but

I’m sure we’ll get somebody else. With Snyder back, I’m not nearly as worried about our defense as I am about our offense. What are the chances we get a new OC sometime this offseason?

Be prepared for no replacement at all.

I saw this scenario outlined on ksufans.com and it seems VERY possible to me:

Cosh becomes the lone DC
Joe Gordon becomes DB coach
Jonathan Beasley becomes Recruiting Coordinator
Grant Gregory becomes Offensive Grad Assistant

Hail Alma Mater from sea to sea
Onward forever, Hail Victory!

Pretty sure Beasley has another year of grad school left

I hope we go after Brad Lambert at Wake Forest.

I think he has the potential to be better than Koenning could ever dream of being.

OC...

I don’t think K-State needs a new OC…just more talent…primarily a QB. Considering you had one QB who was a statue and not a very good passer, and another who could run but not really throw…to get to 6-6- was pretty impressive.

Keeping your remaining staff in place and recruiting well is key this offseason.

As far as talent goes...

I think we’ll have some decent guys competing for QB next year. Between Lamur and Harper I think that will sort itself out, but I’m less confident in the play calling of our co-coordinators.

Vic was the co-Defensive Coordinator

Do we not have faith in the other co-Defensive Coordinator, who I assume will take over as the sole DC?

Cosh's record as a DC at Maryland and other places

was so-so.

Apparently, Maryland was ready to run him off before we hired him away.

But Maryland sucks and I’m not sure I trust their opinion on anything. They kept a 2-10 coach and named freaking James Franklin as his successor, after all — not too sure they would recognize winning football even if they saw it.

Snder was the main reason

for our success. It’s the work ethic and holistic mentality of the team that changed from last year to this year. I think we will be ok with whomever is there next year.

Wildcat for life

Is it me?

Or does K-State seem like the Royals sometimes? I mean every time we have someone good on our staff another school wants to siphon them away. Why can’t the AD and the school president lock these guys into multi-year contracts like we did with Hall and Martin? What is more intriguing in this deal is why would you want to go to the Illini? They were probably the worst Big Ten team last year while K-State contended for the North title and now with KU in rebuilding mode it would seem the race next year is between Nebraska, Missouri and K-State. I give his tenure over there at 2-3 years and then he will either be gone with Zook or have moved on again.

I'm thinking

This was a mutual decision between HCBS and Vic.

In which case, I’m cool with whatever Snyder wants.

by BracketCat on Dec 16, 2009 11:52 PM CST up reply actions

True

I definitely think that the fact that Vic only had a one year deal validates that.

by williewildcrack on Dec 17, 2009 9:13 AM CST up reply actions

So....

KU is running off all their assistants. Maybe some of them would like to convert to their in-state non-rival school.
