Around SBN: VIDEO: Austin Rivers' Buzzer Beater Finishes Off UNC

OPEN GAME THREAD: Boston

No, not the musical group. The university.

Tipoff against the mighty Terriers is imminent. Hopefully, it's the only Wyattvision (or rather, Boylevision) game we are forced to enjoy this season. Here's to an excellent TV package!

Discuss the game below.

What channel?

I’m watching Syracuse whip up on Cal on ESPN2.

Oh

I thought you wrote Ohio State. I was thinking basketball.

by BracketCat on Nov 19, 2009 6:58 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah

And the shooting disappeared.

I reiterate: Where are the guards? Where is Denis? He should chew a zone up.

by BracketCat on Nov 19, 2009 6:58 PM CST up reply actions

Listening to K-State BB

or watching my dog go nuts, pulling every single toy out of her toy basket…which is currently more entertaining?

by gw1754 on Nov 19, 2009 6:57 PM CST reply actions

Yikes

At least it sounds like we’re starting to wake up now.

by BracketCat on Nov 19, 2009 7:04 PM CST up reply actions

I like Ben Boyle

But it’s just like with Wyatt in football.

He’s busy breaking down the last play while the next one is going on, and I know more from the crowd reaction then I do from the game call.

If there's one negative about Martin's teams...

They really, really struggle against zone defenses.

Agreed

That and they are terrible defending in zone.

Bad combination.

Thank God for McGruder

7 for 9 on the season.

But they’re 6 of 10. What the hell is wrong with our perimeter D?

by BracketCat on Nov 19, 2009 7:17 PM CST reply actions

So...

…are we looking at the same song different verse? Struggle all year against the zone and get beat by inferior teams that drain threes?

by Catfan33 on Nov 19, 2009 7:17 PM CST reply actions

Well, we haven't lost yet

I think this is about as ugly as we will play this season. Bigs haven’t figured things out and still a lot of miscommunication.

They’ll be nearly unbeatable in February, I think.

Interesting development

Wally and Denis both playing with two fouls.

Not very like Frank, but I guess Denis has earned his trust. Now Wally, I can’t explain.

by BracketCat on Nov 19, 2009 7:22 PM CST reply actions

Why are we jacking up 3's?

We started by owning the paint, and we need to continue it.

by gw1754 on Nov 19, 2009 7:22 PM CST reply actions

More important...

Why are we a fucking turnover machine?

Frank was right. We beat ourselves.

by BracketCat on Nov 19, 2009 7:23 PM CST up reply actions

Shit guys, its a zone.

Not rocket science. How many careless turnovers have we had?

by gw1754 on Nov 19, 2009 7:24 PM CST reply actions

Five missed free throws in a row

This is how you get upset, guys. Stupid careless mistakes.

by BracketCat on Nov 19, 2009 7:27 PM CST reply actions

Throw in 10 turnovers...

…terrible defense, and mediocre shooting and its a recipe for disaster.

by gw1754 on Nov 19, 2009 7:29 PM CST up reply actions

Oh

to be a fly on the wall in that locker room at half

by Catfan33 on Nov 19, 2009 7:28 PM CST reply actions

Three guys with three fouls

I doubt they have the depth to hang on in the second half

by Catfan33 on Nov 19, 2009 7:30 PM CST reply actions

Still....

…..bad, bad basketball players. Bad!

by Catfan33 on Nov 19, 2009 7:31 PM CST reply actions

Frank's gonna

make Mangino look like a pussy at halftime.

by Catfan33 on Nov 19, 2009 7:33 PM CST reply actions

Lowe has 4

They just don’t have anyone else.

I wish I could have seen the 6’2" guard foul JHR. That would have been funny.

Upset alert in Stillwater

CU is playing much better than OSU.

Cate has thrown a pick and should have thrown at least three more.

0 for 6 on third downs, despite running it down CU’s throat in the first half.

Just had a field goal blocked.

Big picture question

What’s with the slow starts? As long as we keep winning, it’s not a big deal, but we can’t keep coming out and sleepwalking in the first half, or we’re going to end up so far behind someone that we can’t make it up.

CU scores again. OSU is terrible without Robinson. BTW, he’s lucky to be alive after that hit last week.

by gw1754 on Nov 19, 2009 8:53 PM CST reply actions

How can the Cowboys come back?

You have to throw now.

Crazy scenario. We beat NU and CU beats NU after beating OSU.

We’d be sole North champion and Hawk would save his job with a 6-6 bowl bid, all while Mangino and Perkins destroy each other.

Please, God, let this happen…

Thanks for the commentary

You guys really shine on your basketball commentary. Wasn’t able to listen to the game, but didn’t miss much. Anticipating great things this year, but I’m not ready to invest in BBall until after I’ve exhausted myself during football. Beat NU!

by ohiocats84 on Nov 19, 2009 9:26 PM CST reply actions

See you all tomorrow night

7:30 p.m. on ESPNU.

It’s a win-win even if we lose, because we’ll face either Dayton or Villanova in the final. Both are ranked and both will boost our RPI much more than any non-con team did last year.

by BracketCat on Nov 19, 2009 10:11 PM CST reply actions

A quick analysis...

If we want to continue to be successful on the season we need to average around .800 in free throw shooting. Take a look at almost any team that has made a run to the Final Four and that is the one thing that really stands out about this game…and the turnovers and lack of perimeter defense. Kudos to the multiple freshmen who hit all but one free throw to ice the game in the end.

by Catbacker98 on Nov 20, 2009 1:09 AM CST reply actions

I'm not real worried yet

We sucked at free throws last fall, too, but I don’t remember them costing us any game in the Big 12. Pretty sure we made most of them in Austin, for instance.

by BracketCat on Nov 20, 2009 10:46 AM CST up reply actions

Not worried just an observation...

This game could have been salted early by making early free throws and we could have won by 20. Living in ACC country I can watch first hand how UNC and Duke put a lot of teams away early by making their free trips to the line count.
