Ask A Husker

Hello, Wildcat fans!

Corn blight here from the wonderful Nebraska blog Corn Nation. Blogs tend to do Q&A sessions between each other's site editors, managers, or whatever. In that regard, we're tending towards being a little like the regular media in that we're restricting the conversation between only a few people.

I'd like to expand the conversation - so allow me to open up this forum for any questions you guys may have about Nebraska, the football team, or the state or the fans as it pertains to next weekend's game.

I would appreciate it if some Wildcat fans would hop over to Corn Nation and start the same dialogue there. My members would certainly appreciate knowing more about what's happening with the Wildcats, particularly your thoughts on the new coaching staff.

Thanks!

Ok here's some questions...

1. I’m flying in from LA to watch this game in person and seeing that its a 6:45 pm start time just how many layers of clothing should I pack?
2. What is the biggest fear NU fans have for this game?
3. How does NU win this game/How does KState win this game?
4. Any places in Lincoln I have to go eat at before i skip oout of town? Im thinking a nice tri-tip but anything would do!

Decent November Football Saturday...

55 and Sunny throughout the day (great for tailgating!).

Low around 39 at night (around kickoff) with 30% chance of rain.

Soooo…yeah bring some winter clothes to be on the safe side.

Hell...

…might as well throw some more answers your way…

2. I’m just going to say the number 8…no more analysis needed (for further analysis look four weeks prior to this matchup against a certain wind-based cardnial-type thingy)

3. As long as we hold on to the ball (see #2 above) and gain confidence early with our offense we should be good. Defensively…just do that voodoo you do so well. Also, KSU seems to lately have some home run potential with special teams (or at least they did with Prince)…yeah let’s not have that happen Saturday.

KSU just needs to watch the NU/ISU game about a billion times and try to copy that formula…or just listen to Snyder…he seems to know what he’s doing.

4. The old guard will pimp Misty’s…at least for a Friday night visit (never been but I heard good things many, many times).

I’m sure if you head over to cornnation someone (JLew?) will swear by The Watering Hole‘s wings (and a decent bar to boot). If your into unique pizza YaYa’s is awesome (and they have a ridiculous large craft brew lineup).

Also Lazlo’s and Buzzard Billy’s in the Haymarket will be a great trip as well. If you want my honest thoughts I’d go to Haymarket for food and Downtown for drankin’. That way you can’t go wrong.

Wings?

I thought i heard a post about wings…
The Watering Hole on O-Street has awesome wings. (Though I heard they sold the original recipe to someone else, but their grilled wings are still awesome.) Really I cannot describe the awesomeness of them- Here just look at this

The rest of the bars are right there on O Street as well.
Lazlo’s is very very good, local brews, and excellent service.
For steaks, I think you have to follow the old guard to Misty’s.

Other questions-
1. It’ll be cooler (for us) cold for you. I don’t think it’ll rain though.

2. Banks returning kickoffs, and punts. The offense looking like it did against Texas Tech, and ISU. 8 Turnovers.

3. Defense for NU. Interesting to see how they handle a large running back. NU offense should be able to generate enough points to win, especially if the defense gets a short field.
Offense for KSU. They need a way to control Suh and Crick (See Kansas), but also be able to score some points. The defense has to keep them close enough that they won’t become too depended on the pass (See Mizzou last week). KSU will have to handle the crowd noise. People say that the NU/OU game was the loudest it’s been in a while. NU fans are hoping that another night game against an old rival will have the same effect. KSU did play @ OU and handled that well, so it’s not like they are new to playing in hostile environments, but Lincoln could be really jacked Sat. KSU also has yet to win a road game.

You can't possibly be a scientist if you mind people thinking that you're a fool.

FWIW...Farmaggedon was not in Manhattan and K-State was not the home team.

Technically true

but I think JLew was referring to hostile environments and Arrowhead was certainly not a hostile environment.

As a Kstate fan...

I give us maybe a 1 in 4 chance of winning. We have advantages, probably on special teams and maybe even on offense, but Nebraska’s defense will be too much I think as it will likely stay low scoring.

We can win if……Suh get hurt in the first quarter lol. Good luck against Texas!

I may Have to eat my words but

I say it’s 50-50. We have played grind it out games and we have been on both ends of blowouts. This team is steadily learning mistake free football and that is what it takes. I have faith that our offense will put points on the board. We will run away from Suh and let the dtrain do his work. Nebraskas offense on the other hand is on and off. Oklahoma was a victory much like iowa states over Nebraska. They haven’t shown any consistent attack… I mean they don’t even know who thier quarterback is 10 games into the season. Here’s to a wildcat victory and bowl game!!

by Clubbzilla on Nov 19, 2009 4:10 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

A few thoughts

You know that Crick is on the other side of Suh? He’s no slouch either.
Lee is our QB. They tried for a spark with Green, but it’s Lee’s team now.
The OU game was not like ISU’s over NU. NU forced those turnovers against OU, and simply handed the ball to ISU.

How many points do you think you’ll score?

And I don’t think it’s a 50/50 game. KSU is about a 16 point dog cat, it’s at Lincoln, at night and NU’s defense has shown consistently that they can stop the run.

No offense, but that is some bad Nubb spin

“NU forced those turnovers against OU, and simply handed the ball to ISU.”

Really? Because all I remember is Landry Jones spraying the ball all over the field. I think he even took the time to gift-wrap one interception and put a bow on it.

Turnovers are turnovers. You had eight. Deal with it.

by BracketCat on Nov 19, 2009 7:15 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Here's the video

Complete with an appropriate soundtrack.

I might be able to agree that two of the turnovers (Paul’s fumble on the sideline pass, and Helu’s fumble where he lost it as he was going down at the goal line) were unforced. But that’s still six turnovers. The other fumbles were caused by ISU defenders ripping the ball out. And if you want to say that Nebraska forced OU’s five interceptions, then you better be ready to admit that ISU forced NU’s interceptions in this game. Their players were in position and made the play when they had an opportunity. Finally, even if you take away all eight turnovers in that game, Nebraska still would average one turnover per game.

I’m not going to go so far as to call this a 50/50 game. We are highly unlikely to score on sustained drives against Nebraska’s defense, which means we’re going to need a big play on defense or special teams to flip the field position. If we get something like that early, we may have a chance. If we don’t, we probably won’t. Relying on circumstances like that make me think it’s less likely that we’ll win, but if Zac Lee throws the ball to Tysyn Hartman on the first drive of the game, who knows?

We'll carry the banner high!

those responsible for the turnovers

have been fired. sacked. hidden away. okay, not all of them….. but that game pretty much Menelik Holt’s career as a Husker. Landry Jones was off against us, and a couple of Zac Lee’s picks against ISU were pretty bad. How’s that for compromise? :)

BTW, take away the 8 TO’s from ISU, and we’re at +9 on the year which is good enough for around 15th nationally. (Yeah….. I can do that, selectively wish away games. I have the power!)

First drive of the game and we’ll be throwing? Not unless it’s way downfield. I think what we learned is that we’re going to run heavy sets with a fullback and when Zac Lee throws the ball, it’s going to be as far downfield to Niles Paul as he can wing it so that if it is picked off, it doesn’t hurt as much as those short and wide passes that we liked to throw earlier in the season.

Where the hell did the Nubb come from?

Yeah NU had some forced turnovers in the ISU, but I still think they handed ISU that game. NU’s defense was masterful in the OU game. I don’t think ISU’s defense can say the same.

Again if NU has 8 turnovers forced or gifts from the great Power Cat in the sky KSU will win.

NU has scored

10, 7, and 10 points at home in conference play. I don’t think it’s outrageous to think you can win at NU without creating 8 turnovers.

by Catfan33 on Nov 20, 2009 11:31 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I didn't say KSU needed 8 to win

just that if they created 8 they will win (probably).

NU’s offense has been a problem, well documented in fact. But the offense has been getting better, Helu’s back or at least healthy, and they haven’t had to score much to win.

You can't possibly be a scientist if you mind people thinking that you're a fool.
