Who: Kansas State vs. Chicago State
When: January 5, 2008 | 7:00 PM

Media: FOX Sports Kansas City/ESPN Full Court/ESPN360 | 1350 KMAN

Welcome to another open game thread against a university you probably haven't heard of before.  This means that we will most likely be commenting on (A) dunks, (B) Frank's awesome displays of sideline intensity, and (C) random thoughts on our existential being.

Okay, I'm making up the third part.  If it gets really boring though, you never know.

Thanks for getting this posted

I was calculating how much time I would have once I got home to get an open thread up. Turns out I could have stopped for gas, too.

Oh, and Arthur Bryant’s for lunch today. Mmm…

Apparently, the fine folks of Maryland don't have the opportunity to have ESPN 360...

So I’m listening on KSAL.

I. Hate. Traveling.

I thought ESPN was considered to be a utility on the East Coast..

apparently, that was an incorrect assumption on my part.

Side note: When they say Kent is from Apple Valley, MN

I always think, “Man, I’d like to visit that place. It just sounds nice.”

It’s like something out of Candy Land. You hop on the gum drop train to get to the Sugar Forrest. Along the way, you stop in Apple Valley to pee and grab a fresh cup of coffee.

Ah, Candy Land

Thank God he makes his free throws.

So far, meh

Not doing anything really poorly, but not really looking that good, either. Probably going to get an earful from Frank in the huddle.

So, since I can't watch this game, I've got the Fiesta Bowl on mute...

So, this should be interesting.

Also, another reason I hate traveling…

I paid $8 for a Caesar salad at the hotel restaurant downstairs. Why did I pay eight bucks? Because the rest of the meals were $25+.

I refuse to pay that much for a meal on principle. Unless it comes with three or four rounds of drinks.

Samuels for 3?

Is it just me, or is anyone else wondering why everyone is just jacking up threes (and missing nearly all of them)?

This is a team of tiny guards – hit ’em in the paint!

That's our offense

The only time we score inside the perimeter is if it’s in transition or someone misses a rebound.

Ditto that

He plays with energy, and his athleticism is off the charts (see: Baylor pre-game warmups last season).

He’s going to surprise a lot of guys this season. I can’t wait until the lavendar jerseys come out so I can get No. 32.

More side topics: Bank jingles must always, always, always suck

This stuff on KSAL is almost hypnotizing in it’s awfulness.

Why do all bank jingles sound like someone paid their fifteen year old son/daughter/grandkid to come up with something on a Casio keyboard?

Oh, Member FDIC. Gotta work that in there in some form of melodic fashion.

We might finally

have found a team worse at shooting free throws than us.

by BracketCat on Jan 5, 2009 7:31 PM CST reply actions

I'm going to be honest about this...

I want Fred on the floor more than Clemente.

I like Jake as the true PG, and Fred on the wing is just deadly.

Anyway, I just like Fred’s game more than Clemente’s in this offense. He’s just more of a dynamic scorer, and we need that consistently from the guard position.

Denis has his strengths, but I like him as a change of pace PG that you can interchange with Jake.

How about something like this:

Pullen: 30 minutes
Brown: 30 minutes
Clemente: 20 minutes

That way, any time that Jake or Fred take a breather, Denis is there to back them up. Jake and Fred play the PG and SG exclusively, and Denis fills in for whoever is out?

That’s my dream anyway.

Oh it was a thing of beauty

Clemente had the ball on the left side wing, and Jamar pointed to the sky at about three-quarter court, indicating he wanted the lob. Clemente obliged, and Samuels soared in from outside the paint for a two-hand throwdown.

27-6 run

That’s ripping a team’s head off and shitting down their throat, kids.

Oh, and allowed less than 10 points through the first 10 minutes AGAIN.

I thought this team was supposed to be good at scoring? Oh, yeah, that’s right – they ran into the Lynch Mob of the Hardwood.

Even more than that...

…the rotation and help-defense is very good right now. Even on that last trip when CSU scored, we played very sound zone defense, one of their guys just made a 15-foot prayer.

Buchi's defense

is about 100x better than it was a month ago. He’s rebounding, blocking shots, and most importantly, he seems to be enjoying that. That’s how you get on Frank’s good side.

Nope

I really should root for Texas — Big 12 solidarity and all — but all their complaining and politicking and bitching about that tiebreaker kind of put me off.

But then I remember that they’re playing aOSU. and I really, really hate me some Buckeyes.

Story of the second half

These refs are SHIT.

Two intentional fouls that they missed. A crap ton of fouls in general. Blown calls left and right.

Typical Big 12 crew. At least we’re getting some free throw practice.

I can only listen to a game on the radio so long...

I’ve started diving into work e-mails.

Did I just hear Matt Wolters right? We’re almost at 50 fouls?

Is Hightower calling this game?

I hope Jamar is OK. I was looking forward to a big breakaway throwdown, but he got hammered from behind and it looked like he hurt his leg. We’re going to need him.

As always, I'm fashionably late.

From what I saw of the game, we had our moments on offense, although it’s hard to tell when Chicago State was hammering us left and right. I think their coach just decided to try and hack the shit out of us and force us to make free throws, which we did (35-46, I think?). Holy crap, 46 freaking free throws?!!

So far, from my observations over the last couple of games, we just haven’t been challenged defensively yet. We make some pretty routine plays that the guys in your local rec league make against low pressure D. While I don’t feel like we will lay an egg on Saturday, I just hope our offense doesn’t panic early when Oklahoma is in our grill from the tip.

by EMAW on Jan 5, 2009 9:39 PM CST reply actions

Random thought about Saturday...

Due to how light most of our guys are, do you think that Griffin may get into foul trouble? When he’s banging inside, he’s going to push some of our guys around something awful. Do you think that translates into him getting some bench time?

(I’m not just asking EMAW; this is a discussion point.)
