Not that surprising

Considering the new (old) coach is well known for using the option and the new OC is well known for using the spread.
That and Freeman never seemed to care that much about his college experience or the impact he could leave on K-state.

Seems there are rumors stirring that...

Rockhurst QB and current Illinois commit Nathan Sheelhaase (spelling??) might be taking a visit to K-State. He’d probably have the potential to be like a Robert Griffin down at Baylor with you guys having an opening at QB but we’ll have to see.

gotta be Coffman, right?

I mean…assuming it’s not Scheelhaase, of course…

wouldn't be surprised to see....

Snyder find a JUCO duel threat if he needs to as well.

He tried...

And, ironically, the kid committed to Utah the week before he was going to visit KSU.

I would guess it won’t be Coffman. I don’t think he fits Snyder’s system very well, and wouldn’t be surprised to us go get someone new. Now, whether that’s Nathan Scheelhaase from Rockhurst or a JUCO guy from somewhere is yet to be seen. But I will be surprised, and dismayed, if Coffman is our starting QB next year in a Bill Snyder-coached offense.

I don't like saying this...

But I seriously hope not.

He doesn’t have the speed (or disposition) to run the option. I can recall at least once or twice in his limited action where he took a good hit and fumbled the ball pretty easily.

Carson, while being a presumably good kid and a tough, tough competitor is no better than Dylan Meier or Allen Evridge. He simply doesn’t have the talent to be a difference maker.

There are two kids on the roster, both redshirt freshmen (Collin Klein, Joseph Kassanavoid), that are probably capable of stepping in and being something worth building around. Both of them were running quarterbacks in high school as well.

I didn't realize Kassanavoid was a running QB...

since he seems so tall. Probably a lot like Jarod Monk out of Wylie, TX…though he will likely be playing TE in college. Jarod appears to be leaning more toward TCU and Baylor for a Business degree, but he does like Snyder’s offense, FWIW.

Kassanavoid is a pretty good athlete.

But, you never know how young guys will react to the speed and intensity of the college game. Scheelhause would be awesome to try and build around, but it looks like Bill is trying to go out and find a QB in the JUCO or high school ranks that is familiar with the spread offense.

Can someone tell me what Josh Freeman is thinking?

Does he think he’ll actually be drafted? If so, why? Usually even good college QB’s don’t succeed in the NFL. And Freeman isn’t exactly one of the most accomplished college QB’s. Does he think he’s going to get drafted and then become a WR or a Safety? Considering he’s a pretty fringe draftee at this point and not at all a good bet to make any NFL team, wouldn’t it have made more sense to spend another year in college, developing himself both physically and as a football player?

He's a lot better than a fringe draftee

Most everybody I’ve heard includes him among the top five quarterbacks available in this draft, and that’s assuming Sam Bradford goes pro. I think it’s still a very open question whether he’ll be an early second-round pick like he says in the article linked above, but I will virtually guarantee he puts up incredible numbers at the combine and in private workouts, because he has a cannon for an arm and, for a big guy, is pretty mobile. His biggest drawback — a lack of leadership — won’t show up in any measureable form for the NFL scouts between now and April.

This is the best choice for Freeman personally.

He is projected as a second round pick, though I wouldn’t be surprised if he fell to 3rd or 4th round. But, considering the new offense Bill Snyder will be running, it wouldn’t have been smart to try and have Freeman run an offense that is not run in the NFL. He is better off cutting his losses and moving to the next level right now rather than struggle with a new system that doesn’t fit his physical gifts.

Too bad

Because I was looking forward to watch this turnover machine in action against KU for a third straight year.
As for Freeman, his stock will only get better as we get further from the season and NFL scouts forget how much he underperformed and start salivating over all his measurables.

It's only fair...

We loved watching the parade of ineptitude you brought against KSU for eleven straight years.

Brian Luke…LOLERZ.

Lucky for me

I grew up in Manhattan during the glory years, and am now going to KU for theirs. So I don’t have to watch terrible defense and turnover prone offense

by 2.1 seconds left on Jan 2, 2009 11:50 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I wouldn't say 'glory years'

That’s kind of hyperbole, don’t you think?

Back-to-back bowl wins doesn’ t make ‘glory years’. Go to eleven straight bowl games, win the division outright more than once, and at least win a conference title before you say ‘glory years’.

I’ll give you some smack talk leeway in regards to KSU sucking right now, but ‘glory years’, come on.

Look at the record

Other than KU’s teams from the late 60s and early 70s, this has been the best 5-6 year run of Kansas football. So yes, these are the glory years, and yes, they are only the glory years b/c our previous history (late 70s, 80s, most of the 90s) were so bad. To see what I mean, think about if Snyder hadn’t been able to do anything post 1995. The previous years of K-state football were bad enough that those 5 years would still be considered the glory years even if nothing followed them. As for us, 4 of our 12 bowl appearances have come in the last 6 years, making this arguably the best 6 year stretch in KU history - hence, the glory years.

At this point, I don't know if you're trying to support or belittle KU...

Support the current incarnation

Because as a K-state fan as well I’m well aware that the previous incarnation sucked

Surrounded by a talented O-line and a running game...

Freeman will be a good NFL quarterback. Unfortunately, as TB noted above, his lack of leadership and, I would add, his inability to make good decisions when protection breaks down limits his ability. Freeman was and is as good as what’s around him. I was actually very disappointed in his progression as a quarterback over the last three years. But then, the student is only as good as the teacher.

by Catfan33 on Jan 2, 2009 11:04 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

I'm going to make an odd comparison

I feel like Josh Freeman is a lot like Texas Tech.

As he leaves his mark on K-State history, he will be considered the best statistical passing quarterback we’ve ever seen. Similar to what Tech does every year – lot’s of numbers. But the thing is, all those great numbers haven’t really added up to anything special. No big wins over rivals, no Big 12 champions, and for the most part only a small blip on the national radar screen. (This isn’t meant to slam Tech. I’m just being extremely general. We could only wish Josh had a season like Tech did this year.)

Thanks Josh for all that you’ve done for K-State. In the end you may be number one in the record books and the highest K-State QB ever drafted, but you are still miles behind players like Michael Bishop and Ell Roberson.

Oh and for the record

If one more person says “duel threat” instead of “dual threat” – I think I’m going to loose it.

In fact, I’m gonig to challenge you to a duel. And be prepared, I’m going to cheat.

Yeah I know

But as for the duel thing, I’ve found that some people don’t know the difference. I’ve been looking at other blogs and sites and have been seeing that a lot of people are using the wrong word. For some reason, that is driving me nuts.

I thought you were being comical...

with your use of loose instead of lose. That drives me nuts when people make that same mistake.

by EMAW on Jan 2, 2009 1:19 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

the problem with either of these cases...

is spellcheck wouldn’t catch them anyway, a lot of times its just a simple typo…I catch myself a lot in regular posts (your, you’re..to, too…there, their) but in comments it usually slips by me when I’m trying to get stuff down quickly.

The loose was just an unfortunate goof.
