Weekend Baseball Thread: K-State vs. Baylor

Who: K-State vs. Baylor
When: April 11-13, 2008
Where: Manhattan, Kan. | Tointon Family Stadium
Media: 1350 KMAN
A big series faces the Bat Cats this weekend as Baylor (20-12, 6-6 Big 12) come to town. The Bears swept the 'beakers last weekend to get back on track after dropping a Big 12 series to Oklahoma and getting swept by Missouri.
K-State currently stands ninth in the 10-team Big 12 standings, 1.5 games behind eighth-place Texas Tech. As you probably know, only the top eight teams in conference qualify for the postseason conference tournament. The Red Raiders will be playing 70 miles away against the 'beakers this weekend, so any upward movement by K-State will likely be a result of our own accomplishments rather than Tech struggles.
Let's get some payback for that painful sweep in Waco last year that knocked us out of contention for a Regional appearance.
Go Cats!

Brrr
It's 43 degrees and the wind is blowing 12 mph, gusting to 22, in Manhattan tonight. I know my fellow Texas Cats join me in saying we don't miss that.

Mid 2nd
Two straight 1-2-3 innings for Brad Hutt so far. Keep it up.
Tenbrink put a charge into one in the bottom of the first, but the wind is blowing hard in from left and it held up a few steps shy of the warning track.
King, Biery and Vaughn due up

Props to Wyatt
He realizes it's (H)umble, Texas, not Humble.
Also, the 'beakers lead Texas Tech, 9-4. Texas leads Missouri, 5-0. Pitching for Mizzou is Aaron Crow, who came into tonight with about a 42-inning scoreless streak (h/t Rock'M Nation)

Damn
Cats blow a bases-loaded, two-out opportunity with a groundout to shortstop.
Wyatt just mentioned the Baylor players are wrapped up in the dugout like it's 25 degrees out. Not surprising. I've never met a group of people who are bigger nancies when it comes to cold weather than Texans.

Another 1-2-3
Hutt's mowing 'em down so far. Through three, he's perfect.
Also, Brian Smoller on the broadcast now. A welcome change.

And again...
Mid 4th, and Hutt has another 1-2-3 inning. It's only taken 45 minutes to play 3.5 innings.

Play it again, Sam
The Cats go down in order in the fourth. Through four innings, and they've only been playing 55 minutes.

Also...
Texas Tech lost to the 'beakers, 9-5.
Nebraska and Okie State are scoreless.
Texas leads Mizzou, 8-3. Sounds like the wind's blowing straight out there.

Damn
Way to go, broadcasters. ;-)
But we're out of the inning as the baserunner is caught stealing.

What a night
So I left during the sixth inning to go see the movie "21." I was pleasantly surprised, it wasn't as predictable as I thought it would be and was fairly exciting.
Anyway, back to Big 12 baseball. Good 6-1 win by the Bat Cats tonight in, uhh, less than optimal conditions at TFS. Let's give a tip of the cap to Brad Hutt, who scattered four hits over 6.2 innings, gave up one run while striking out five and only walking one. In other words, another typical Hutt performance. Cats go for the series win tomorrow at 2 p.m., and the weather isn't supposed to be much better, with the high projected at 50 with a chance of morning snow.
A 6-1 game looked downright normal compared to what happened in the rest of the Big 12 tonight. Mizzou defeated Texas by the score of 31-12. Yes, you read that correctly, Mizzou scored four touchdowns and a field goal while Texas kicked four field goals. Mizzou ace Aaron Crow gave up nine runs in five innings...and ended up the winning pitcher.
In other action, Oklahoma State downed Nebraska, 1-0 (yeah, Okie State only scored one run and won...go figure). Texas A&M dropped Oklahoma, 8-7. The 'beakers gave us a little help by knocking off Texas Tech, 9-5, putting us only one-half game behind the Red Raiders.
Let's get 'em tomorrow so we can get the brooms out Sunday.

Oops
So I wasn't able to listen to the broadcast today (laying by the pool, studying, and watching the Masters distracted me) and of course we ended up losing. I blame myself, much as I blame Wyatt Thompson and Matt Walters for blowing Brad Hutt's perfect-game big yesterday.
Anyway, the Cats lost, 5-4, to Baylor today. Tough game that could have gone either way. Now we really need to focus and pick up the rubber match tomorrow, as the 'beakers will be looking to sweep Tech. A win tomorrow helps us keep pace with them and move ahead of Tech in the standings.
In other action, Okie State blasted Nebraska (19-2), Missouri continued Texas' misery (13-2), the 'beakers beat Texas Tech (9-1) and Texas A&M beat Oklahoma.

Hey Bat Cat fans,
Just popping over from Rock Chalk Talk. I notice that this morning KU, KSU and TTU are all in a virtual tie for 8th in the conference, and only one-half a game behind Oklahoma. It looks like it will be a pretty heated battle for those final slots in the conference tournament field.
It is just my opinion of course, but I think Kansas, Kansas State and Baylor all can make good late season runs. These teams are all better, talent-wise, than their records indicate. I think Tech, Oklahoma, Missouri and Nebraska are all over-achieving by the same standard. If I were a betting man I’d say Tech and Oklahoma will be the two teams left out at the end of the season. I had A&M as my pre-season favorite and that looks like it was a good prediction at this point.
You should have a good game today in Manhattan.

Good points, JQ
Helluva game by Esquibel yesterday in Lawrence. Looks like I was a little off with my pre-series comments that we couldn't expect much help from you guys against Tech, as y'all are going for the sweep and the chance to move ahead of us if we trip up against Baylor today.
JQ, shoot me an email at the blog email account (bringonthecats (at) gmail.com) sometime. We will have to get some previews going on for the season-ending series, as it looks like it may have implications on who will make the conference tournament.

Love to do a joint series preview before the big
in-state battle. I suspect that series will have a lot of meaning.

3-0 loss
The Cats drop the game and the series to Baylor behind a weak effort today at TFS. We now stand 3-9 in conference play and are going to need an amazing stretch run to qualify for OKC.
