More On The Federal Biodefense Lab

The more I hear about the federal biodefense lab that is likely headed to Manhattan, the more I like it.  Today, the KC Star reported that projections have Manhattan doubling in size in the next 15 years.

That's incredible.  And in my opinion, that's good.

We all love Manhattan's small-town charm, its college-town charm.  We don't want it to lose that.  But trust me, even if it doubles in size, it's not going to lose it, because 50,000 to 100,000 is not, at least in my experience, such an incredible leap.  I've spent time in college towns such as Columbia, Mo., Boulder, Colo., and Lawrence, Kan.  All are college towns with approximately 100,000 residents.  Trust me, they will never be mistaken for Kansas City, Denver, or St. Louis.  They won't even be mistaken for Omaha or Wichita.

More population and more business should also be a good thing for K-State sports.  More people in the immediate vicinity could mean more butts in seats at Bill's House and Bramlage.  That means more athletic department revenue.  And I think we all know what more athletic department revenue could mean.

This equals more jobs, more stores, and increased infrastructure...

all of which would help me convince the wife that we need to move to Manhattan.

Hmm...

…if I could get a job as the university’s attorney in 10 or 15 years…

I still don’t think that’s an argument I’d win with my (soon-to-be) wife.

Unfortunetely

I’d need Manhattan increase by at least 30x before I’d be convinced to move there. Damn me.

Man do I hate Longhorn fans, well except for the ones that actually went there.

U of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana

is about 100,000 altogether when I lived there. It certainly couldn’t be confused with a big city.

Tangent: I would chauffeur hotel guests around town, usually to the airport. A guy from Chicago once asked, “What is that smell?”
Me: “What smell?”
Chicago: “Is there a feed lot near here?”

Obviously, I’m not as sensitive to the smell of money…er, agricultural businesses.
