Back to the Future
Yes, I just edited this post. It just seems silly to link to the news about a coaching search after said search has apparently concluded.
According to the Wichita Eagle/Kansas City Star's Jeffrey Martin, Bill Snyder has been re-hired as Kansas State's head footall coach.
A news conference was scheduled for 10 AM tomorrow.
Feel free to post your responses below.

Say it ain't so...
I think that Bill Snyder would be crazy to take this position, and the K-State administration would be crazy to ask. I for one, would like to remember this legendary man as I do right now. He is responsible for the greatest turnaround in college football history, and I’d like to always know him in that way. The game has changed a lot since the glory days of Snyder and I don’t know if he’s the one for this tremendous undertaking.
I would have rather given Prince another year than bring Snyder back and destroy his reputation… not to mention K-State’s reputation. This coaching search has already been a huge embarrassment – let’s not dig our hole any deeper.
Bill Snyder is the man and everyone knows it. He has nothing to prove, but K-State does. Sooner or later we’re going to have to find our way without him. We might as well do that without making my hero and yours look ridiculous.

I said the same thing to TB
I don’t like the fact that it’s Synder coming back – and might have been better off if we gave a few more years to Prince. I don’t think Synder will be able to coach in today’s offensive juggernaut. I remember how frustrated I was back in ’04 and ’05 on how he ran the team.
This is going to come back and bite us in the ass.

ugh
There is a good chance that this tells the country you cannot win at KSU unless your name is Bill Snyder. This will only work if there is a good and clear succession plan in place, meaning excellent assistants with matching salaries, something Snyder lacked his last few years. I guess it could be worse, but I am thoroughly underwhelmed by Krause. Keep him the hell away from the basketball program.

The bigger issue
The more important issue is, regardless of who the next head coach is, is will our new President recognize how important it is to fully support the athletic dept. That will help determine the success of Patterson, Snyder (and whomever comes after him) or Franchione. At this point if in fact Patterson has said no because of the uncertainty about the administration then it could be argued that Krause should’ve given Prince another year. As painful as that might have been (and maybe impossible if the boosters were adament about moving RP out now) it might have been easier to attract a Patterson or someone else with an new & known administration in place.

Well, I hope we have an assistant head coach in the wings.

Some good people available for assistant coaches:
Chuck Long
Phil Bennett
Brent Venables
I don’t know which would be best for a HC-of-the-future.

As a Sooner fan
You don’t want Chuck Long and Venables won’t leave OU for the same job at a program that is, sorry, below OU right now.
Interesting hire though. Maybe he could turn the program around again. I hope he can because a good K-State team is good for the Big 12.

I think...
Venables would probably only leave for KSU if he were assured a HC position in the near future.
Of course, there are lots of programs taking a look at him for their HC vacancies as well.
by MadCat on Nov 23, 2008 8:56 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
My favorite would be Phil Bennett though...
He has a history with K-State that is really unfortunate.
by MadCat on Nov 23, 2008 9:01 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I have no desire for Bennett to come back
His defenses were not great against the spread, and later in his KSU tenure, he was a very weak recruiter. Everyone hangs his hat on the trio of Buhl, Hickman, and Pierce, but outside of that…not much.
I’m not thrilled with Chuck Long either. In the long line of OU OC’s, he would probably fall behind Leach, Mangino, and Wilson. Sooner fans, help me out….agree or disagree?
I doubt Venables leaves unless Bill is one or two years away from retirement. He may be on the table in two years or so if he hasn’t gotten a job by then.

This hire scares me on so many different levels...
Most of all, I have no idea who Snyder can or will hire.
He needs to hire young, dynamic recruiters to get this job done. He and Joe Paterno are close; they need to be on the horn ASAP.

Wow
The program definitely didn’t make any progress under Prince but I’m not sure this is any either. I have the utmost respect for Coach Snyder, however, the program needs to move ahead and this is just taking a step back for the sake of tradition. KSUbailey is right, K-State needs to find a way without Snyder.

Man
This smells a lot like desperation. For KState fans, I hope the administration is right about this. But it seems to me that what was needed was some energy and innovation. Not sure you’re gonna get that with a 65 yr old coach. Good luck, none the less.

Correction
He’s 69.
He will be seventy next year.
That does factor into my distaste in ths move.

This is so indicative of why we'll never be big players...
Bob Krause worked in Anderson Hall for how many years? He is way WAY to close to Weefy and the Old Guard of KSU to be a decent athletic director. He has no fresh perspective and his loyalties blind his objectivity. Not to mention he was given the job b/c of his tenure, not his experience or proven track record.
As an undergrad I worked in Anderson for 3 years. Bob is a great guy, I always liked him in our limited interactions. Not that I am the final judge and jury, but I can at least say I knew him casually.
That being said, it is quite obvious why KState will rarely be relevant. The University is incredibly incestuous and a professional outside perspective is rarely sought. “What about Prince, he was outside.” Yes, he was. But it was Weefy that made a gut judgement call and we see how well that worked out. Since when do you hire a coach for a successful Big XII program after he had a good interview? “Damned be the stats and track record, full speed ahead!!”, so sayeth the Weef.
Maybe if Martin decides to leave in a few years, they’ll rehire Woolridge because he knows where to park his car.
We were incredibly lucky to have Snyder come along and build the program. This is a terrible move for him to return, and a terrible move for the program. We need to look forward, not relish on the past. I can only imagine Krause and Co. f’d up this coaching search as much as everything else this season. If rehiring Snyder was due to pressure from the big donors, then that is even worse. Grow a f-in spine and do your job to guide the damned program. The Vaniers and others can’t donate enough money to compensate for a growing number of empty seats on gameday.
As for the heir apparent, “head coach designate argument”: Martin reports a 5 year contract. 5 years guys and gals. Cinco anos. Great, we can all live in limbo and languish as the kicking post for the Big XII South for a few more years. Do you really think Venables wants to suck wind in Manhattan for 4-5 years? He doesn’t need to learn the game anymore. He wants to coach. If he wants to remain an assistant why not stay at OU, win a truckload of games, championships, and bowls and wait for the right HC offer to come along? His emotional ties to KSU only go so far. He, along with others, knows how dumb our administration has been. Why subject themselves to that?
Snyder has no active recruiting network, and that is task numero uno for any new coach at KSU. Prince has done nothing for us here, and bringing a coach out of retirement will do nothing as well.
Sorry if this is ranty. I’m tired of being let down by KSU.

I currently know no directors of institutional advancement...
that would be good athletic directors. It is traditionally the spring board for presidency. They need to get him out of the AD office, stop the meddling. That is a good position for Bill Snyder, IMO.
A five year contract from BK is worth tiddly-crap, as history has shown.
I will support Snyder and am excited to see who he is able to hire, but I agree with mystman995 below: This is a quick-hire, like the others. I don’t know if there was much of a search done (or why a search committee was formed). BK should get out now as he hasn’t showed that he can handle the position professionally, IMO. Being in charge means you take resposibility for everything, regardless of the real causes. Don’t blame the person before you, don’t blame the fans. You are responsible; otherwise, you are irrelevant.

Do you want the surgeon removing your kids tonsils or the guy who manages his office?
Get someone with an athletics background to run the show. Krause is way out of his league.

Honestly, you don't want to say bad things about Wefald and Krause...
because they’ve done such great things for the university over the years, but as far as athletics go…well, they suck.
You know, Snyder coming back may be great. Who knows. However, the fact that they didn’t even want to conduct a coaching search is bullshit. Of course, I’m not sure I want Bob Krause conducting a damn thing if he can’t even start a press conference on time.

He is good for the University...
but I can’t help but visualize everything he touches in the AD office falling over…and subsequently bursting into flames…as it hurtles down a cliff…flying toward a factory that manufactures rusty hypodermic needles…and packs of rabid weasels.
My feelings may be a tad bit unfounded.

Weefs and BK...
have done a lot for the University, there is no doubt about that. But we’re talking sports here. They both are utterly clueless. Weefarooni got really lucky with the first Snyder hire, and everyone has lauded him since. Lets be honest, we were really lucky to find anyone to take the program when Snyder did. It could have just as easily been a crap coach and we’d probably not even be in the Big XII by now.
If they are playing musical chairs to bolster their own careers (i.e. Krause to replace Weefer Sutherland), that only goes to prove our point that KState lacks any semblance of outside consult.

This is the third quick-hire in a row.
First it was Ron Prince. Not much of a search there.
Then Frank Martin – basically to hold onto Beasley. Although this one looks like it will pan out.
Now Back to Bill. I really want to know what happened with Gary Patterson.

Defense Defense Defense
You’re right… the Frank Martin “hiring process” was a joke
I certainly gave Prince a chance but had questions considering his offensive background. I know the Big XII is usually known as an offensive conference, however, K-State needs to have a good defense to win (remember the good ol’ days). We all know that they will never be able to recruite the same offensive skill players as the teams in the Big XII South… so we need to build a defense that will shut them down. We also need to go back to running the ball and controlling the clock. Forget this pass happy / quick-score crap!

Krause took the easy way out.
I’ve been too pissed to really comment on this until now. You may remember my post on why Bill is not what K-State needs right now in a head coach. Athletic Director would be a better position for him. I will continue to support the team no matter what, but there better be a card up Krause’s sleeve if this is going to work. Our only hope is that Bill, Bob, and Wefald have some assts. already ligned up. Bob Krause is quickly becoming Carl Peterson 2.0…

Couldn't agree more!
I think Snyder would make a good AD. Perhaps that’s the plan is to use Snyder basically as an interim coach while a new President and AD are hired. Then, hopefully we can pick up a solid coach once everything else is in place. If Krause takes over for Wefald and then Snyder is moved up to AD, that would be a decent leadership team to attract a good coach such as Patterson.

I just have to wonder, with Wefald’s upcoming retirement, is this him trying to solidify his legacy by bringing Snyder back?

Wow
I really don’t know what K-State is thinking. Not only is this bad for the immediate future, but long term its even worse. K-State needs to build their program for long term success, not a quick fix which won’t even happen under Snyder. This is bad and could set back K-State for years. Everybody in the Big 12 is improving (even us), except K-State. I think he (Snyder) was pressured back into the job from the K-State administration. I don’t see this ending happily. Are recruits going to play for a guy that might not even be there in three years? I wasn’t Prince’s biggest fan because he kind of rubbed me the wrong way, but you could tell he was a player’s coach. I see him walking out midway through the season.
Unbelievable hire, worse imagination than our hire of Sherman.

Snyder will win ballgames...
It’s 2013 or 2014 that I’m worried about.
We’re going to have to go through the whole ‘bridge’ hire all over again. Yet another guy who wasn’t quite good enough.
Someday, we’ll have to move on. I figured now would be as good a time as any.
Of course, with Krause and Wefald leading the search, I’m not sure we would have liked what we saw regardless.

The recruiting is just going to be putiful. How do you recruit players when a different coach will be in place by the time they are seniors?
Whoever is the coach-in-waiting (if there is one) has to do all the recruiting. We need to find the Dalonte HIll of football and sign him fast…
